With newly added support for features that iPhone owners expect from a modern carrier, Fi is closing some of the biggest gaps that previously made it feel like a compromise on Apple’s hardware.
The changes are especially useful for people who want Google Fi’s flexible plans, international coverage, spam protections, and multi-network approach without giving up an iPhone. Depending on the device and iOS version, users can now get a smoother setup experience and better day-to-day reliability, though a few limitations still remain compared with Android.

What’s New for Google Fi on iPhone
Google Fi’s iPhone experience has gained several features that make it feel much closer to what Android users already get on the carrier. The biggest addition for many people is support for RCS messaging on iPhone, available through Apple’s Messages app on compatible devices running iOS 18 or later. With RCS enabled, texts between iPhone and Android users can include higher-quality photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts, and more reliable group messaging than traditional SMS and MMS.
Fi’s iPhone support has also improved around core carrier features that matter day to day. Depending on the device and software version, iPhone users can now take advantage of 5G service, Wi-Fi calling, eSIM activation, hotspot tethering, and international roaming features that previously worked better, or only fully, on Android phones. That means iPhone owners using Fi no longer have to accept as many trade-offs just to get Google Fi’s flexible plans, international data, and family pricing.

Main additions iPhone users will notice
- RCS messaging: Better iPhone-to-Android chats in Apple Messages, including richer media sharing and modern group chat behavior.
- 5G access: Faster data on supported iPhone models in areas where Fi’s partner network offers 5G coverage.
- Wi-Fi calling: Calls can route over Wi-Fi when cellular signal is weak, useful in homes, offices, hotels, and basements.
- eSIM setup: Many newer iPhones can activate Fi without waiting for a physical SIM card.
- Improved international use: Fi’s travel-friendly data and texting features are more practical on iPhone than they were in earlier years.
The RCS addition is especially notable because messaging has long been one of the awkward spots for mixed iPhone and Android households. Google Fi is closely tied to Google’s broader push for better cross-platform messaging, so RCS support on iOS gives Fi customers a cleaner experience without requiring a separate chat app. It does not turn Android conversations into iMessage, and message bubbles still appear differently, but the underlying experience is much better than old-fashioned SMS.
Together, these updates make Google Fi a more realistic carrier choice for iPhone owners who previously liked Fi’s pricing or travel perks but hesitated because of missing iOS features. The service still works best when the iPhone is updated, carrier settings are current, and the Google Fi app is installed for account management and activation, but the gap between Fi on iPhone and Fi on Android is now much smaller.
How the New iPhone Features Improve Everyday Use
The biggest practical improvement for Google Fi customers on iPhone is that the service now feels less like a compromise. Features such as Wi-Fi calling and richer messaging support make common tasks more reliable in the places people actually use their phones: apartments with weak indoor coverage, offices with dense walls, airports, hotels, and international destinations. Instead of treating the iPhone as a partly supported device on Fi, these additions close some of the day-to-day gaps that previously made the experience feel better suited to Android phones.
Wi-Fi calling is especially useful for anyone who spends time in areas where cellular reception is inconsistent. If your iPhone has a strong Wi-Fi connection but only one bar of mobile signal, calls can route over Wi-Fi instead of struggling over the cellular network. That can mean clearer audio, fewer dropped calls, and better reachability at home or work. It also helps when traveling, since calling over Wi-Fi can reduce dependence on local cellular coverage indoors, such as in hotels, conference centers, or basement restaurants.
Improved messaging support also makes Fi more comfortable for iPhone users who regularly text people outside Apple’s iMessage ecosystem. With modern cross-platform messaging features, conversations with Android users can feel less dated than traditional SMS and MMS threads. Users can benefit from higher-quality media sharing, better group chat behavior, typing indicators, and read receipts when supported on both ends. That does not turn Android conversations into iMessage, but it narrows the usability gap that many iPhone owners notice when family members, coworkers, or friends use non-Apple devices.
Everyday benefits for common iPhone users
- At home: Wi-Fi calling can improve call reliability in rooms where cellular signal is weak but broadband is strong.
- At work: Better indoor calling helps in buildings where metal, concrete, or low-level floors interfere with mobile reception.
- When traveling: Fi’s international-friendly plans pair better with iPhone when core calling and messaging features are more dependable.
- In mixed-phone group chats: Richer messaging can make conversations with Android users less frustrating than basic SMS/MMS.
- For families: Parents and kids using different phone brands can communicate with fewer media and group-message headaches.
These changes also reduce the amount of troubleshooting iPhone users have to tolerate. In the past, a Fi customer using an iPhone might have needed to explain certain features worked differently from a friend’s Android phone on the same carrier. Now, more of the expected carrier features work in a familiar iOS way, which makes Fi easier to recommend to households that are not fully committed to Android. For people comparing low-cost or flexible wireless plans, that smoother iPhone experience can be the difference between treating Fi as an experiment and using it as a main phone service.

Device and iOS Requirements
Google Fi’s newest iPhone improvements depend on both the iPhone model and the version of iOS installed. For the best experience, users should update to the latest available iOS release before setting up Fi or checking for new carrier features. Apple delivers many carrier-related capabilities through iOS and carrier settings updates, so an older software version can leave features such as 5G access, improved messaging support, or simplified activation unavailable even if the phone itself is compatible.
Most current Google Fi features work best on an unlocked iPhone. The device cannot be tied to another carrier’s financing lock or SIM restriction, because Fi needs to install its own cellular profile through a physical SIM or eSIM. iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and newer models support eSIM, which is the preferred setup for many Fi customers. Older compatible iPhones may still work with a physical SIM, but they may miss newer conveniences and network improvements.
General compatibility checklist
- Unlocked iPhone: The phone must be carrier-unlocked to activate on Google Fi.
- Recent iOS version: Install the latest iOS update available for your device before activation.
- Google Fi app: The Fi app is required for account setup, plan management, and guided activation.
- eSIM-capable model: iPhone XS/XR or newer is recommended for eSIM activation.
- 5G-capable model: iPhone 12 or newer is required for 5G service where Fi has compatible coverage.
For 5G, the hardware requirement is straightforward: users need an iPhone 12 series or newer, including later standard, Pro, Plus, and Pro Max models, as well as compatible newer iPhone SE models if supported by Apple’s cellular hardware. The phone also needs to be running a version of iOS that includes Google Fi 5G carrier support. Coverage still depends on location, network availability, and the customer’s Fi plan, so seeing LTE in some areas does not necessarily mean the setup is wrong.
Messaging-related upgrades can have a separate software requirement because they rely heavily on Apple’s Messages app and carrier configuration. Users should check Settings > General > Software Update and then open Settings > General > About to allow any carrier settings prompt to appear. If an update is offered, accepting it can enable the latest Fi-supported behavior without changing the customer’s plan. Users moving from another carrier should also make sure their phone number has fully transferred before judging whether calling, texting, data, and newer messaging features are working correctly.
International features also vary by plan and device capability. Fi’s Flexible and Unlimited Plus plans include broader international data and texting support than Simply Unlimited, while hotspot and roaming behavior may differ by destination. An iPhone that meets the software requirements can still be limited by plan rules, local partner networks, or regional restrictions. In practice, the safest path is to use a modern unlocked iPhone, keep iOS current, activate through the Google Fi app, and confirm the plan includes the features the customer expects to use.

If you are setting up Google Fi for the first time, install the Google Fi app and sign in with the Google account tied to your Fi plan. The app will guide you through activation, including eSIM setup on compatible iPhones. In most cases, you can activate service without a physical SIM by choosing the eSIM option, following the on-screen prompts, and allowing the iPhone to add the Fi cellular plan. If you already use a physical Fi SIM, you may be able to keep using it, but switching to eSIM can make plan setup, device transfers, and dual-SIM use easier.
Check carrier settings and cellular options
After activation, confirm that your iPhone has the latest carrier settings. Go to Settings > General > About and wait for a prompt. If an update appears, tap Update. Next, open Settings > Cellular and select your Google Fi line. Make sure Cellular Data is assigned to Fi if you want Fi to handle mobile data. If you use two lines, such as Fi and another carrier, review which line is used for calls, texts, iMessage, FaceTime, and data.
- Enable 5G: Go to Settings > Cellular > Google Fi > Voice & Data and choose 5G Auto or 5G On, if available.
- Enable Wi-Fi Calling: Open Settings > Cellular > Google Fi > Wi-Fi Calling and turn it on. You may need to confirm an emergency address.
- Check MMS and group messaging: Go to Settings > Messages and make sure MMS Messaging and Group Messaging are enabled.
- Review roaming: In Settings > Cellular > Google Fi, enable Data Roaming if you plan to use Fi internationally and your plan supports it.
Some features may also require account-level setup in the Google Fi app. Open the app and check sections such as Account, Privacy & security, International features, and Family settings. For example, spam blocking, data alerts, plan controls, and family safety tools are managed through Fi rather than through Apple’s Settings app. If a feature does not appear immediately, restart the iPhone after updating iOS, carrier settings, and the Fi app.
If activation or feature setup fails, remove any outdated Fi cellular profile only after confirming you can reactivate service. You can check installed plans under Settings > Cellular. For persistent issues, the most reliable sequence is to update iOS, update the Fi app, restart the phone, confirm carrier settings, and then reopen the Fi app to finish setup. Users moving from Android should also make sure iMessage and FaceTime are configured with the correct phone number after the Fi line is active.
Remaining Limitations for iPhone Users
Google Fi’s latest iPhone improvements narrow a long-standing gap between iOS and Android support, but the experience still is not identical across both platforms. iPhone owners can now get a more complete Fi setup than before, yet several Fi features remain Android-first because they depend on deeper carrier integration, Google’s own system apps, or network-switching behavior that iOS does not expose in the same way.
The biggest difference is still network switching. On phones designed for Fi, especially supported Android models, Fi can move between partner networks automatically to find stronger coverage when available. iPhones on Google Fi generally use T-Mobile’s network in the United States rather than dynamically switching across mulle domestic networks. That means coverage and performance are closely tied to T-Mobile availability in your area, even though international roaming and standard Fi plan features may still work well for many travelers.

Features that may still be reduced or unavailable
- Automatic domestic network switching: iPhones do not get the same multi-network switching experience found on select Android phones designed for Fi.
- Some VPN behavior: Google Fi’s privacy and security tools can vary by platform, plan, app version, and region, so iPhone users should check the Fi app for the exact options available on their account.
- Carrier feature parity: Settings such as Wi-Fi calling, hotspot use, visual voicemail, MMS, and 5G can depend on the iPhone model, iOS version, carrier bundle, and whether the Fi setup has been completed correctly.
- Advanced troubleshooting controls: Android phones often provide more carrier diagnostics and Fi-specific configuration paths than iOS allows.
There are also setup-related constraints that can affect how smooth the experience feels. Some users may still need to update iOS, install the latest Google Fi app, complete eSIM activation, or verify cellular data and messaging settings before every feature works as expected. If an iPhone was previously tied to another carrier, old profiles or stale messaging settings can cause issues with MMS, group texts, or data until the device is cleaned up and reconfigured. Travelers should also confirm roaming settings before leaving the country, since international use can depend on the plan type and destination.

Plan differences matter as well. Flexible, Simply Unlimited, and Unlimited Plus do not all include the same international data, hotspot, and device-use benefits. A feature that works on one Fi plan may be restricted, metered, or unavailable on another. For families mixing iPhones and Android phones on the same account, this can create different experiences line by line, especially when one person has a device designed for Fi and another has an iPhone relying on standard iOS carrier support.
These limits do not erase the value of the new iPhone features, but they set realistic expectations. Google Fi is now much easier to recommend to iPhone owners who want straightforward pricing, international coverage, eSIM activation, and better iOS compatibility. Still, users who want the fullest version of Fi’s network intelligence and Google-specific carrier tools will continue to get the most complete experience on supported Android hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why This Matters for Google Fi Customers
For iPhone owners, Google Fi has often felt like a strong plan with a few iOS-specific compromises. The latest additions narrow that gap by making core phone features work more like customers expect on a modern carrier: richer messaging, better coverage options, easier activation, and a smoother day-to-day experience inside Apple’s ecosystem. That matters because many Fi customers choose the service for flexible pricing, international data, family plans, and spam protection, but still want the reliability and polish they associate with using an iPhone on a major carrier.
The biggest benefit is that iPhone users no longer have to weigh as many trade-offs before joining or staying with Fi. Features such as improved messaging support, 5G access on compatible models, Wi-Fi calling where supported, and cleaner eSIM setup make the service feel less like a workaround and more like a full carrier experience. For families with a mix of Android phones and iPhones, the upgrade is especially useful: group chats, media sharing, and travel connectivity become more consistent across devices, reducing the friction that used to show up most clearly in mixed-platform households.

- Improved travel experience: Fi’s international data strengths are more compelling when paired with stronger iPhone support and simpler setup.
- Less pressure to switch carriers: Existing Fi customers with iPhones have fewer reasons to move to Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile solely for iOS compatibility.
- Easier family plan decisions: Households can mix Pixel, Samsung, and iPhone devices without as many feature gaps between users.
These updates also make Google Fi more competitive in a market where carrier differences are increasingly about software experience rather than just coverage maps. Apple users tend to expect features to work automatically after a carrier update or iOS upgrade, and Fi moving closer to that expectation helps the service look more mature. There are still limitations compared with using Fi on select Android phones, especially around network switching and some carrier-specific integrations, but the practical gap is smaller than it used to be. For customers who like Fi’s pricing model, international perks, and Google account integration, the improved iPhone support makes the decision to stay with Fi much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which new Google Fi features are now available on iPhone?
Google Fi’s latest iPhone improvements add support for features that make the service feel closer to the Android experience, including better messaging support such as RCS where available and improved calling options like Wi-Fi calling on supported setups. These additions help iPhone users get more reliable conversations, clearer media sharing, and better coverage indoors or in weak signal areas.
Do I need a specific iPhone or iOS version to use the new Google Fi features?
You should use a recent iPhone running the latest available version of iOS, along with the newest version of the Google Fi app. Some features may also require updated carrier settings, which usually appear automatically after installing iOS updates or restarting the phone. Older iPhones may still work on Google Fi, but they may not support every new feature.
How do I turn on the new Google Fi features on my iPhone?
Start by updating iOS, then update the Google Fi app from the App Store. Open the Fi app and follow any setup prompts for your line, then check iPhone settings for options such as Wi-Fi Calling, Cellular Data, and Messages. If the feature does not appear, restart the iPhone and confirm your Google Fi service is active on that device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will Google Fi on iPhone now work exactly like it does on Android?
No, the iPhone experience is improved, but it still is not identical to using Google Fi on a Pixel or other supported Android phone. iPhones on Fi generally rely on one main network rather than Fi’s full network-switching experience. Some advanced Fi features may remain Android-only or depend on Apple’s iOS support.
Does this make Google Fi a better choice for iPhone users?
Yes, especially for people who already like Fi’s pricing, international data, and flexible plans but were hesitant because iPhone support felt limited. Better messaging and calling features remove some of the biggest annoyances for iOS users. It still makes sense to compare coverage in your area, but Fi is now more practical for iPhone owners than it used to be.
Bottom Line
Google Fi’s latest iPhone upgrades make the service feel much less like an Android-first carrier and far more practical for everyday iOS users. With improvements such as easier setup, better calling and messaging support, and smoother international use, iPhone owners now get a more complete Fi experience than before.
If you have a compatible iPhone, make sure your device is updated, your Fi app settings are current, and any required carrier or eSIM setup steps are complete. For iPhone users who want flexible plans, strong travel perks, and simpler network management, Google Fi is now a more compelling option to consider.
