Buffer lets you select Google Drive files from its web composer through a cloud-file picker. That is different from sending a Drive link to Buffer through its API or Zapier: API media must be reachable without sign-in, so a typical private Drive share link will not work. Choose the workflow based on whether you want to select a file yourself or automate a post.
What the Google Drive integration does
Buffer’s Google Drive integration lets you browse Drive files and folders while creating a post in Buffer’s web composer, then attach a selected image or video without switching to Drive. Buffer’s Google Drive integration page describes the feature as a way to pull images and files into posts. Buffer’s Help Center explains that Uploadcare facilitates access to cloud services including Google Drive; Uploadcare is the file-picker provider in this authorization flow, not a separate Google Drive product.

You need a Google account with Drive. When prompted during setup, signing in and authorizing Uploadcare lets the picker access the Drive account you authenticated.

- In Buffer’s web dashboard, select + New, then choose Post.
- Select the social channel or channels for the post.
- Open the integrations picker and choose Google Drive.
- Sign in to Google if prompted, then authorize Uploadcare to access your Drive files.
- Browse Drive, select a file, and finish composing the post. Schedule it through Buffer if you do not want to publish immediately.
These steps follow Buffer’s integration setup guide and Help Center instructions. The authorization gives the picker access to the account you chose; it does not make a private Drive file publicly available to other services.

Know the picker’s limits
- Web app, not mobile: Buffer says attaching files from cloud-storage services through this feature is not available in its mobile apps.
- One file per picker action: the Help Center says this flow uploads one file at a time.
- Each team member connects their own Drive: in an organization with multiple users, each person can access only the Drive account they authenticated. A teammate does not automatically inherit another member’s Drive access through Uploadcare.
- Usual media requirements still apply: files remain subject to Buffer’s normal file-type and size requirements.
To remove Uploadcare’s access, revoke its permission in your Google Drive settings, as described by Buffer’s Help Center. This is separate from disconnecting a social channel in Buffer.
Composer picker vs. API or Zapier automation
The key distinction is how the media reaches Buffer. In the composer, you authenticate and choose a file interactively. In an API or automation workflow, Buffer receives a media URL and must be able to retrieve the asset itself.

Buffer’s developer guide states: “Links that require a viewer to be signed in – for example a Google Drive or Dropbox "share" link – will not work.” This is why the Drive picker’s ability to access your authenticated account does not make the same private share link usable as API media. Buffer documents Zapier as an official partner for passing image or video media into Buffer, but automation still needs a URL the service can retrieve as the actual media.
Choose the right workflow
- Choose the Drive picker if you want to browse your own Drive and manually attach a file while composing a post in Buffer’s web app.
- Choose API or Zapier automation if another service is creating or scheduling posts. Supply a direct media URL that works without sign-in and will stay accessible until Buffer fetches it.
If an automated post cannot retrieve its media, first ask whether you sent a file through the interactive picker or a URL through an API or automation. For the picker, check the Google sign-in and Uploadcare authorization. For URL-based workflows, test that the URL is accessible without authentication and points to retrievable media, not just a Drive preview or share page. Buffer’s API requirements are documented in its media guide; do not assume a particular Drive-link conversion will remain supported.
