If Google Docs page numbers aren’t showing, first check that the document is in Pages format—not Pageless. On Android, also turn on Print layout to see existing page numbers. If the document has no numbering yet, insert it from the Page Number menu.
1. Check whether the document is in Pages or Pageless format
Google Docs does not support page numbers in Pageless documents. In Pages format, the document has pages and page breaks, and supports page numbers, headers, and footers. Google’s computer help states: “On a document that’s in pageless format, you won’t be able to add certain features, such as columns, page numbers, headers and footers, and more.”

On a computer
- Open the document and select File > Page setup.
- Select Pages.
- Click OK.
If the document had been switched to Pageless, Google says headers and footers hidden in that format will become visible again when you switch back to Pages. A format change may therefore restore existing page elements without requiring you to add them again.
On Android
- Open the document in the Google Docs app and tap Edit.
- Tap More > Page setup.
- Turn Pageless off.
These steps switch the document to a format that supports page numbers. On Android, a separate display setting controls whether page elements are visible in the app.

2. On Android, turn on Print layout
Pages format and Print layout do different jobs: Pages format makes page-number features available, while Print layout displays page elements in the Android app. Google says page numbers, headers, and footers can only be seen and edited in Print layout mode.
- Open the document and tap More.
- Turn on Print layout.
If numbering was already in the document, it should be visible in Print layout. If there are still no numbers, check whether anyone inserted them.

First confirm the document uses Pages format and inspect the pages to see whether numbering is present. The available Google help establishes that Pageless format does not support page numbers, but does not establish a general desktop repair procedure for a Pages document with missing numbers. Don’t rely on an undocumented desktop toggle as a guaranteed fix.
