The headline’s claim that Google won a particular head-to-head test should be treated as that test’s result—not a general ranking—because no protocol, location, network, measurements or date are available here to verify it. Published measurements under different conditions have found Cloudflare faster for DNS queries, while also finding that resolver choice can affect CDN routing.
What 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 actually do
Both are public DNS resolvers: services that look up the IP address associated with a domain name when your device requests it. Google Public DNS uses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Cloudflare’s standard resolver uses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Changing your resolver changes where DNS lookups go; it does not increase your internet connection’s bandwidth.

Which DNS is faster?
It depends on the network and on what is measured. DNS query latency is the time for a resolver to answer a lookup; it is only one part of loading a website. The result can vary with geography, ISP routing and peering, cache state, the domains queried and the measurement period. A local benchmark is useful for choosing a resolver on that connection, but it is not a promise of faster page loads elsewhere.
A 2025 academic study compared Google, OpenDNS, Cloudflare and Quad9 with four CDNs: Akamai, Cloudflare CDN, Edgecast and Fastly. In the study’s measurements, Google and OpenDNS had higher DNS latency than Cloudflare, which the authors attributed to lower cache hit rates. The same study found a Cloudflare penalty in client-to-edge mappings with Akamai. These results describe the study’s conditions, not every user’s experience or the unspecified test behind the headline. Read the study.

Privacy: compare the providers’ stated policies
Cloudflare publishes resolver-specific privacy commitments, including that it does not use resolver personal data for advertising, limits retention of source IP information, deletes truncated IP addresses and resolver logs within 25 hours, and shares limited anonymized data with APNIC. These are Cloudflare’s published commitments, not a claim that an independent, contemporaneous audit has compared it directly with Google. Cloudflare’s resolver privacy commitments.
Google says Public DNS temporarily collects limited information to improve the service and for security. Its FAQ says this information is not linked to Google accounts and is not shared externally except when legally required. - Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Encryption: use an encrypted DNS protocol where available
Both providers support DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT). These protocols encrypt DNS queries between your device and the resolver; they do not make all your internet activity anonymous. Check your device or router settings to confirm which protocol is actually enabled rather than assuming that entering a resolver address turns encryption on.

Cloudflare also documents Oblivious DNS over HTTPS (ODoH), designed to add a privacy layer so that no single entity can see both the requester’s identity and the DNS query. Availability depends on client support and configuration. Cloudflare’s encryption documentation and Google’s Public DNS documentation describe supported options.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Filtering: standard Google DNS and Cloudflare Families differ
Google says its standard Public DNS service generally does not filter unwanted sites. Cloudflare offers separate Families resolver addresses for malware blocking, with another option that also filters adult content. Families is a different configuration from standard 1.1.1.1, so choose the endpoint that matches whether you want filtering. Cloudflare setup instructions; Google FAQ.
Reliability and workplace networks
Google states that its free Public DNS service has no service-level agreement. Both providers publish global anycast service information, but your route and ISP configuration can affect performance and reachability. Google also cautions that using Public DNS may limit access to private workplace domains; follow your organization’s network policy before changing resolver settings on a work device.

How to choose on your own connection
- Measure repeated DNS queries. Compare Google and Cloudflare from the same device and network, using the same test period and a range of domains. Look at repeated results rather than one fast lookup.
- Check real-world behavior. Try the sites and services you actually use. DNS response time alone does not capture CDN edge selection or full page-load time.
- Choose based on more than speed. Weigh the providers’ stated privacy practices, the encrypted DNS options your device supports, and whether you want Cloudflare Families filtering.
- Keep the setting reversible. If a service becomes unreliable or a workplace domain stops resolving, restore your previous DNS setting or use the resolver required by your network administrator.
The 2025 study illustrates why the fastest lookup is not necessarily the best overall result: a resolver can answer quickly yet influence which CDN edge a site selects. Test from your own network and decide which trade-offs matter for your use.
