A common recent change is showing an article preview above (or alongside) the headline, so you see a snippet of what the story contains before you open it.
This affects how you scan your feed, how often you tap through, and sometimes how you perceive source quality. The good news: you can usually adjust Discover relevance and interactions, and you can troubleshoot common display issues.

What’s happening in Google Discover?
In the Google Discover feed, some cards may display a short preview block—often multiple lines—directly over or above the headline. Instead of relying only on the headline and thumbnail, you get a quick preview of the article’s content right in the feed.
From a user perspective, it’s still the same Discover experience: you scroll, decide whether a card is relevant, and tap to open the full article (typically in a browser view or the publisher’s page depending on your device and configuration).

Why you might see article previews above headlines
Google runs feed experiments and UI updates over time. Previews can be enabled for a subset of users, particular content categories, or specific app versions, and they may roll out gradually by region and device.
- Feed clarity: More context helps you decide faster when multiple headlines look similar.
- Better engagement signals: Click-through behavior can improve when users see a relevant snippet immediately.
- Content type differences: Previews may appear more often for news, long-form stories, or topics that benefit from extra context.
- Experiment rollout: Not everyone sees it at the same time; it may depend on A/B testing.
What the preview UI usually means (and what it doesn’t)
Most of the time, the preview is generated from text on the article page—often an excerpt or key summary segment. It’s designed to be a “quick read” indicator, not a full article.
It typically does not mean:
- The story is shorter or simplified.
- The preview is always the exact opening paragraph.
- That Google has permission to rewrite content in a way that changes the source article. (It’s a presentation change, not a guarantee of content alteration.)
When previews are inaccurate or too vague, it’s usually a relevance/extraction issue—either the snippet doesn’t match what you care about, or the page structure affects what Google can extract.
How to confirm you’re seeing this in your feed
Before changing settings, verify the behavior so you can troubleshoot effectively.
- Open Google app (Android) or the Google feed entry (iOS uses Google app similarly).
- Scroll to your Discover feed.
- Look for cards where a text snippet block appears above the headline or between the thumbnail and headline.
- Tap the card. Confirm the preview doesn’t replace the headline—your destination page should still show the publisher’s title.
If you only see previews on certain topics, note which categories (e.g., “Tech,” “World,” “Sports”) since Discover often tailors UI presentation by topic.

How to control Discover behavior (the settings that matter)
You can’t always turn preview formatting off globally, but you can shape what appears in Discover and how quickly it learns your preferences.
Adjust topics and interests
- In the Discover feed, find a card related to a topic you want to change.
- Tap the three-dot menu on the card (often labeled with an overflow icon).
- Select Manage or See fewer for that topic.
- Go to Settings within the Google app and review Your interests / Topics.
Refreshing your interests can reduce the “wrong snippet” problem because you’ll see different articles with better-aligned preview text.
Control sources and content categories
- On an article card, use the three-dot menu.
- Choose Not interested if you want less of that specific item type or story angle.
- If the UI offers it, use Hide or See fewer like this.
Be consistent: hiding a topic once helps, but repeated actions train better.
Manage notifications and personalization signals
- Open Google app → Settings.
- Check Notifications and any Discover-related toggles.
- Ensure your personalization options (often under General or Privacy) are set to what you expect.
If previews bother you but Discover content remains relevant, reducing frequency (rather than trying to disable UI formatting) usually yields the best results.
Ways to reduce low-value previews and improve relevance
If previews make you open fewer useful articles, you can improve feed quality by making Discover understand what you want.

- Easy to use: With a Google Play gift code, you never have to worry about expiration dates or fees.
- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
- Use “Not interested” on repeated offenders: If you consistently skip one outlet or one kind of story framing, hide it multiple times over a few days.
- Follow topics you like: Add interest categories manually where available, so Discover doesn’t guess from your clicks alone.
- Engage with the right subset: If you do click, open the story that matches your intent. Random clicking can mis-train relevance.
- Report issues when offered: Some cards include feedback options that help improve snippet extraction or content classification.
Troubleshooting when the previews look wrong
Occasionally the preview text appears truncated, duplicated, or out of alignment. Here are the practical fixes to try in order.
Update the Google app (and restart)
- Open the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS).
- Update the Google app to the latest version available.
- Force close the app and reopen it.
UI rendering issues are often tied to specific app builds. Updating to the newest release reduces the odds you’re seeing a known bug.
Clear Discover cache (Android) or refresh app state (iOS)
- Android: Go to Settings → Apps → Google.
- Tap Storage and choose Clear cache (avoid clearing data unless necessary).
- Open the app again and check Discover.
- iOS: Restart the app (swipe away) and reboot the iPhone if the display stays broken.
If the preview formatting is tied to cached feed content, clearing cache often corrects it.
Check accessibility and display settings
Large font sizes, display scaling, or accessibility zoom can cause snippet blocks to behave oddly.
- On Android: Settings → Display and check Font size and Display size.
- On iOS: Settings → Display & Brightness and Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size.
- Temporarily reduce font size to see if previews render normally.
Test with a different network or VPN off
- Turn off VPN or private DNS temporarily.
- Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Recheck Discover cards.
Some content or UI payloads can fail when network rules block parts of the feed rendering.

Sign out and back in (last resort)
- Google app: Go to Settings and find account options.
- Remove the Google account and add it back.
- Verify Discover settings, then check if previews are still displayed incorrectly.
This can reset a corrupted personalization state, but it’s more disruptive—use it after the simpler steps.

If you’re a publisher, previews in Discover can affect first impressions and click-through rates. The preview you see is a feed presentation; the full story still loads from your site.
Improve snippet extraction signals
- Use clear, structured HTML: Proper headings and readable main content help snippet selection.
- Avoid heavy client-side rendering only: If the main text isn’t available promptly, extraction quality can degrade.
- Keep metadata consistent: Title and main content should align. Misalignment can lead to previews that don’t match user intent.
Validate with Search Console
Use Google Search Console to monitor indexing issues and content performance. While Discover uses different systems than standard web search, improvements in crawlability and rendering often help overall content understanding.
Common mistakes people make
- Assuming it’s an app-specific bug: Many users see it as an experiment rollout, so waiting for updates and consistency across devices matters.
- Trying to “fix” UI formatting instead of relevance: If previews annoy you because they don’t match your interests, adjusting topics usually works better than cache clearing.
- Reacting to one bad card: Discover learns from repeated feedback. One hide action is rarely enough to change the next 50 cards.
- Ignoring accessibility settings: Large text and display scaling can create the appearance of broken previews.
FAQs
Can I turn off article previews in Google Discover?
Usually there isn’t a universal toggle that disables preview formatting for everyone. You can, however, reduce low-value stories by using Not interested / See fewer and by refining interests in the Google app settings.
Are the previews rewritten by Google?
Often the preview is an excerpt or summary segment derived from the article page. It’s a presentation snippet for the feed, not a guarantee of verbatim text from the first paragraphs.

Why do I see previews for some topics but not others?
UI experiments and topic-specific feed rendering can vary by category. If you notice it only for certain interests, it’s likely controlled by Discover’s ongoing testing and content classification.
Why does the preview text look cut off or duplicated?
Common causes are app version issues, cached feed state, or accessibility/display scaling. Update the Google app, clear cache (Android), and try adjusting font size temporarily.
Does this change the article link or source?
The preview doesn’t typically change the destination. Tap behavior should still open the same article source; the difference is just the feed card’s presentation.

Bottom Line
Google Discover showing article previews above headlines is mostly a feed presentation change driven by ongoing UI experiments. You can’t always disable the preview layout, but you can strongly influence what appears by refining topics, using feedback tools on cards, and keeping the Google app updated.
If the previews look broken (truncated, misaligned, or inconsistent), run through update → cache/app refresh → display/accessibility checks → network changes. That sequence fixes most real-world display issues without guesswork.
