Google Discover has been about “good enough” personalization for years—but it was often passive: you reacted, Google learned, and your feed shifted over time.
The new capability to Follow sites adds a more direct control layer. Instead of relying only on clicks and reading patterns, you can explicitly tell Discover which publishers you want to hear from.

This guide walks through the feature end-to-end: where it appears, how to follow and unfollow, what to expect, and what to do when the option doesn’t show up.
What the Follow sites feature changes in Google Discover
When you follow a site in Google Discover, you’re effectively adding a publisher preference. That typically means the feed will prioritize stories from those sites more consistently, even when you haven’t interacted with every individual article.

Prerequisites and where you’ll see the feature
You’ll need the Google Discover surface where the Follow control is supported, and your Google app/browser must be current.
Supported entry points
- Google app on mobile (Discover feed)
- Chrome on mobile, in feed-like surfaces that show Discover content
- Google Discover on the Google homepage where Discover is available in your region
Account and version requirements
- Be signed into your Google Account where personalization is enabled.
- Update the Google app and/or Chrome to the latest version available in your App Store or Play Store.
- Feature rollout can be gradual. If you don’t see Follow yet, it may be waiting for your device or region.
If you’re on iPhone or iPad, you’ll usually find Discover inside the Google app. On Android, Discover is typically the first thing you see when you open the Google app.

Follow workflows tend to follow a consistent pattern: open the Discover story card, find the publisher name, then use a Follow control.
Method A: Follow directly from a story card
- Open the Google app (or the Discover feed area where you normally see Discover).
- Scroll to any story from the publisher you want.
- Look for the publisher name near the top of the story card, or an action button on the card.
- Select Follow (sometimes shown as a toggle-style button like “Follow” vs “Following”).
- Confirm if the interface prompts you.
After following, the site usually becomes a stronger signal for future Discover recommendations. The effect isn’t instant in every case—give it a few refreshes and a day of normal browsing.

Method B: Follow from a publisher page (when available)
- Open a Discover article from the publisher.
- Tap the publisher name or the publisher avatar to open its profile.
- Select Follow.
Some layouts surface the Follow option on the publisher’s profile rather than the story card. If you can’t find it on the card, try tapping the publisher name.
Managing follows: unfollow, adjust interests, and reduce noise
Following is reversible. You can remove a publisher when it stops matching your expectations, and you can also shape Discover with likes/dislikes and interest controls.
Unfollow a site
- Open Discover and find any story from the site you previously followed.
- Tap the publisher name or open the story’s action menu.
- Select Unfollow (or tap Following to toggle it off).
If you don’t see any stories from that publisher anymore, use Discover settings (see below) to remove the follow without relying on the feed.
Find your followed sites in settings
- Open the Google app.
- Go to Settings (often via your profile icon).
- Find a personalization area related to Discover, Google Discover, or Interests.
- Locate the list for Followed sites or similar.
- Remove sites you no longer want to prioritize.
Use “Feedback” to tune the feed
Even with Follow, Discover still reacts to your behavior. Use feedback actions on story cards (commonly Not interested, Feedback, or Hide) to teach Discover what to downrank.
How Follow interacts with other personalization signals
Following a site doesn’t replace all other signals. It adds an explicit publisher preference on top of existing behavior-based learning.

What usually gets stronger after following
- More stories from the followed publisher in your daily Discover feed
- Better consistency when you check Discover repeatedly
- Greater likelihood of seeing that publisher even if you only clicked one or two articles earlier
What can still change even after you follow
- Topic relevance: a followed publisher may still appear fewer times if a topic doesn’t match your broader interests
- Timing: your feed can still favor freshness and trends
- Quality and spam signals: low-quality or repetitive content may be downranked
If you follow a site and it floods your feed with content you don’t want, unfollow is usually faster than relying on feedback alone.

Troubleshooting when Follow sites isn’t showing or isn’t working
Most problems fall into one of three buckets: the feature hasn’t reached your device, your app/browser is out of date, or personalization controls are restricted.
If you don’t see the Follow button
- Verify you’re signed into the correct Google Account.
- Update the Google app and Chrome to the latest versions available.
- Check your region settings—some feed features roll out unevenly.
- Restart the app and try again after a few minutes.
- Try a different Discover entry point (e.g., Google app vs Chrome feed) to confirm the feature is available there.
If the Follow button works but the feed doesn’t change
- Refresh the feed and browse normally for a day. Personalization changes often require multiple signals.
- Remove conflicting feedback: if you previously tapped Not interested on that publisher, Discover may still be downranking it.
- Unfollow and re-follow once to force a clean preference state (only if it’s clearly not applying).
- Clear cache for the Google app (Android) or reinstall the Google app (iOS) if you’re stuck with outdated feed behavior.
If you see Follow, but it won’t save
- Check connectivity (switch Wi‑Fi/mobile data).
- Make sure account sync is working.
- Try again on a different network.
If the issue persists, look for system updates and try later—rollouts can be inconsistent across devices.
Privacy and control: what you’re actually opting into
Following a site is a preference tied to your Google activity and settings. It doesn’t mean you’re granting extra permissions to that publisher; it means Discover uses your preference to influence recommendations.
Your Discover controls and personalization settings still govern what appears in your feed overall. You can typically remove follows and adjust broader interests at any time.

What to watch for
- Cross-device behavior: if you use the same Google Account on multiple phones or tablets, follows often sync.
- Feedback tension: strong “Not interested” signals can override follow behavior.
- Account switching: following on one account won’t affect another account.
Alternatives if you prefer less personalization
If you want Discover to stay broader and less publisher-specific, you can use feedback tools without building a follow list.
Rely on feedback instead of following
- Use Not interested or Hide on stories that don’t fit.
- Repeat when necessary; Discover updates ranking based on repeated signals.
Limit Discover influence through settings
- Go to Google app Settings.
- Find the personalization area tied to Discover or Activity.
- Adjust controls that affect recommendations and ad/personalization behavior.
Names and exact labels vary by version, but the goal is the same: reduce how strongly your activity shapes the feed.
Common mistakes that make Discover feel worse
Following is powerful, but it’s easy to end up with a feed that’s overly narrow or just plain noisy.
- Following too many sites at once: If you add 10+ publishers quickly, Discover can swing toward a cluster of topics you didn’t intend to prioritize.
- Not unfollowing after expectations change: Follow should match what you want long-term, not just what you read once.
- Ignoring feedback signals: If you disliked a publisher earlier, your follow may not overcome that immediately.
- Mixing multiple accounts: People often follow on a secondary Google Account and then wonder why the feed won’t update on their main phone.
When in doubt, start small: follow one or two sites, then observe your feed over 24–48 hours.

Will following a site guarantee I’ll see every article?
No. Following increases priority for that publisher, but Discover still ranks by relevance, freshness, and your broader interests. You may still miss articles, especially on topics outside your usual patterns.

Can I follow from Chrome if I use Discover there?
Often yes. If the Discover feed in Chrome shows the same story cards and publisher actions, you should be able to use the Follow control there as well. If you don’t see it, try the Google app version of Discover.
Does following a site affect recommendations on iPhone and Android?
Typically, yes—preferences are tied to your Google Account. If you follow from an iPhone, you should generally see the effect on other devices logged into the same account (within a reasonable time).
Why do I see Follow for some sites but not others?
Availability can depend on rollout, publisher eligibility, and where the control is supported in the UI. Sometimes only one Discover surface (e.g., Google app vs Chrome) exposes Follow for certain publishers.
How long does it take for the feed to reflect my follows?
Usually within the same day, but it can take longer depending on your browsing patterns and how much your feed previously relied on other signals. Give it at least a day of normal use before concluding it isn’t working.
Bottom Line
The Follow sites feature makes Google Discover more controllable: you can explicitly prioritize specific publishers instead of waiting for the algorithm to infer your preferences from clicks alone.
If you’re trying it for the first time, start with one or two follows, use feedback on stories you dislike, and don’t hesitate to unfollow when your taste shifts.
