Google Data Studio in 10 Minutes: A Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

A practical 10-minute Google Data Studio walkthrough covering data connections, report setup, a starter table, one chart, formatting, automatic saving, and BigQuery prerequisites.

You can build a useful first dashboard in Google Data Studio in about 10 minutes if you already have an accessible data source and the required permissions. The current product name is Data Studio; many tutorials still call it Looker Studio. Open datastudio.google.com, add an existing or new data source, keep the starter table, add one chart, and make a basic formatting change. Account sign-in, authorization, connector setup, or billing requirements can make the process longer.

What Google Data Studio is now

Google restored the Data Studio name in April 2026. The older lookerstudio.google.com address redirects, and existing reports do not need to be updated because of the rename. Google describes the no-cost product as a tool for customizable, shareable dashboards and reports with charts, tables, filters, date controls, text, and images. Google positions the individual product for personal exploration and ad-hoc visualization, while Data Studio Pro is intended for teams and organizations that need additional administration and enterprise controls. Read Google’s current overview at Welcome to Data Studio.

Before you start

  • Sign in to the Google account that can access your data.
  • Choose a source you can authorize immediately. An existing sample or previously configured source is usually fastest.
  • Decide on one question for the first report, such as “How do visits change over time?”
  • Use the free individual edition for this walkthrough; Pro is not required.

Choose the quickest data connection

When you create a report, Data Studio lets you select an existing source or connect a new one. The right route depends on access and prerequisites, not on a difference in chart features.

Route Setup friction What you need Best use
Existing source under My data sources Lowest Permission to use a source already available to your account Fast first report or sample-data demonstration
New connector under Connect to data Varies Requested account details, authorization, and any connector-specific permissions When the needed source is not already listed
BigQuery public FAA dataset Higher for beginners A Google Cloud project associated with a valid billing account Optional BigQuery practice using the US airports table

Google’s Quick start guide uses a sample Google Analytics source and also demonstrates BigQuery’s public FAA data. The BigQuery example is not the default ten-minute path because its Cloud project and billing-account prerequisite can interrupt setup. You can review available connectors at Connect to Data.

Create your first report step by step

1. Open a blank report

  1. Go to datastudio.google.com and sign in.
  2. Select Create, then Report. Data Studio opens the report editor with the Add data panel.

2. Add an accessible data source

  1. Choose a source under My data sources if one is already available.
  2. Otherwise choose a connector under Connect to data, provide the requested account details, and complete authorization.
  3. Confirm the source is added to the report. If a permission dialog appears, use the account that owns or can view the data.

Google’s procedural instructions are in Tutorial: Create a new report. Interface labels may still contain “Looker Studio” in older documentation even though the product is now Data Studio.

3. Name the report

Click the Untitled report name in the header and enter a descriptive title, such as “Website visits by month.” A specific name makes the report easier to identify when you return to it or share it.

4. Make the starter table answer one question

After a source is selected, Data Studio places a table on the canvas. Select the table and use the properties panel to adjust its data and style. Keep the first version focused: choose a meaningful dimension and metric rather than trying to configure every available field.

5. Add one time-series chart

  1. Select Add a chart in the toolbar.
  2. Choose a Time series chart.
  3. Click or drag on the canvas to place it.

With Google Analytics data, Google’s tutorial says Date and Views are selected automatically. Other connectors expose different fields, so select the available date dimension and metric that match your question.

6. Resize and apply one basic style change

Drag the chart’s edges to give labels enough room, then use the properties panel to make one practical adjustment, such as a chart title, number format, or color. Stop once the table and chart are readable; themes and pixel-perfect layout can wait.

7. Check the result

  • The report title identifies the subject and period.
  • The table displays rows rather than an empty-state warning.
  • The chart uses a sensible date field and metric.
  • Labels and values are legible at the report’s normal viewing size.

8. Finish without looking for a Save button

Google says report changes save automatically. Once the title, table, and chart look correct, you have a usable first draft. You can continue refining it later instead of delaying the initial report for advanced design work.

If the ten-minute path breaks

No source appears under My data sources

Switch to Connect to data and select the required connector. The source owner may need to grant your account access, or the connector may require a separate sign-in.

The connector asks for billing or a Cloud project

That is expected for the documented BigQuery FAA example: associate a Google Cloud project with a valid billing account before querying the public dataset. Use an existing Analytics or sample source instead if your goal is simply to learn the editor.

The chart is empty or uses the wrong fields

Select the chart, inspect its data properties, and choose dimensions and metrics that exist in the connected source. Automatic field choices described for Analytics should not be assumed for every connector.

You cannot edit the report

Verify that you are signed in with an account that has edit permission, not only viewer access. Ask the owner for edit rights or create a report in your own account using a source you can authorize.

What to do after the first draft

Add viewer filters or a date-range control when readers need to change the slice of data themselves. Then consider a second chart that answers a different question, consistent naming for fields, and a simple layout that places the most important metric first. Those improvements are optional; the initial report is complete once its source, table, chart, title, and readability check are in place.
