Chrome is rolling out two features that make everyday work feel more “office-like”: a Split View mode for side-by-side multitasking and a PDF annotation experience that can save back to Google Drive.
If you bounce between research, documents, and review notes, the combination matters. It reduces switching apps and keeps your annotated files in the same place you already store drafts and final PDFs.

What’s new: Split View and Drive-backed PDF annotation
Split View helps you keep two pages visible at once inside the browser, so you can compare documents, drag content between tabs, or reference a source while editing notes.

What you need before you try it
These features depend on Chrome version and Google account permissions. Before you troubleshoot anything, confirm your environment.
Check your Chrome version
Open chrome://version and look at the Google Chrome version. If you’re on an older build, update Chrome from the menu: ⋮ (three dots) → Help → About Google Chrome.
Make sure Drive is available and signed in
Ensure you’re signed into the same Google account you want to upload to. You can verify from ⋮ → Settings → You and Google (or in the top-right profile area).

Confirm PDF support in Chrome
Chrome’s PDF viewer is typically enabled by default, but if you’ve changed settings or installed heavy extensions, the annotation UI may not appear.
Check: Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → PDF documents. Make sure PDFs are allowed to open in Chrome’s PDF viewer.
How to enable and use Split View in Chrome
Split View works best when your display is large enough for true side-by-side reading. It also behaves differently across operating systems because window management is OS-controlled.
Windows and Linux
Start by opening the two tabs or pages you want to compare. Then use Chrome’s Split View option (wording can vary slightly by release) or rely on the browser’s built-in multitasking controls.
- Open your first page in Chrome.
- Open the second page in a new tab.
- Click the tab menu (or the Split / Side-by-side control if shown on your build).
- Select Split View for the current tab.
- Choose the second tab to place in the other half.
If you don’t see Split View controls, update Chrome and check whether an extension or enterprise policy is disabling experimental features.

macOS
On macOS, you may see two paths: Chrome’s own Split View or macOS window tiling that keeps two Chrome windows side-by-side. The key is keeping both views in the same workflow without losing tabs.
- Open the first Chrome tab you want to keep visible.
- Open the second tab (or page) you want to reference.
- If Chrome offers Split View: use the tab action control and choose Split View.
- If Split View isn’t visible: place two Chrome windows side-by-side using macOS window tiling, then keep each window on the desired tab.
macOS users often prefer the OS tiling route if Chrome’s UI doesn’t show the option yet in their build.
ChromeOS
ChromeOS emphasizes tablet-like multitasking and external display workflows. Split View may appear as a choice from the tab/window multitask controls.
- Open Chrome and navigate to your first page.
- Open your second page in another tab.
- From the multitask/window control area, choose the Split option.
- Select the second Chrome tab to fill the other pane.
- Resize using the divider bar if your build supports interactive resizing.
If you’re on a managed school or work Chromebook, admin policies can disable certain multitasking features.
How to annotate a PDF in Chrome and upload to Google Drive
This part is the real productivity win: you review, mark up, and then send the updated PDF back into Drive without leaving your browser.
Supported files, tools, and where the annotated PDF goes
Chrome’s PDF viewer typically supports common markup actions such as highlighting, drawing, and adding text or comments (tool availability can vary by build). When you save, the annotated PDF is uploaded to your Google Drive in the location you choose (or in the default Drive folder if no prompt appears).
Expect the file to be saved as a new version or a new file with an annotation-preserving name. You should verify in Drive immediately after saving so you know whether it replaced or duplicated the document.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step-by-step: annotate and upload
- Open Chrome and sign into Google.
- Open the PDF in Chrome (either by navigating to the file URL, opening it from Drive, or dragging a PDF into Chrome).
- Wait for the PDF viewer toolbar to load. Look for markup/annotation tools in the top toolbar or side panel.
- Select an annotation tool (for example: Highlight, Draw, Text, or Comment).
- Click or drag on the PDF to apply your markup.
- When you’re ready to save, choose Save or Upload to Drive (the exact button label depends on the release).
- If prompted, pick the destination folder in Drive and confirm the upload.
- Wait for the upload to complete and confirm the success message.
- Open Google Drive in a new tab and verify the annotated file is present.
Pro workflow: annotate directly while viewing related pages in Split View, so you can reference the source material without alt-tabbing.

Troubleshooting: when Split View or PDF upload won’t work
If the feature doesn’t appear, the PDF markup tools don’t show up, or the upload fails, the cause is usually one of three things: version gating, permissions, or PDF viewer settings.
Fixes that usually resolve PDF annotation/upload issues
- Update Chrome: Go to ⋮ → Help → About Google Chrome and install the latest build.
- Re-enable Chrome PDF viewer: Confirm PDFs open in Chrome (Settings → Site settings → PDF documents).
- Disable conflicting extensions: Test with extensions temporarily off (especially ad blockers, script blockers, and PDF-related plugins). Restart Chrome after toggling.
- Check Drive account permissions: Ensure the account you’re signed into can write to the destination folder.
- Try uploading from an existing Drive PDF: Some flows behave differently when the PDF is opened from a local download versus a Drive file.
- Clear only relevant site data: If Drive upload fails repeatedly, try clearing cookies and site data for accounts.google.com and drive.google.com.
- Verify pop-ups and redirects: If the save flow opens a Drive picker, strict pop-up blocking can prevent it.
Fixes that usually resolve Split View issues
- Confirm you have two valid pages/tabs: Some builds require both panes to be navigable pages, not special chrome:// pages.
- Disable extensions: Window management extensions can interfere with Split View controls.
- Reset Chrome flags (if you changed them): If you previously modified experimental flags, restore defaults and retest.
- Try a fresh profile: Create a new Chrome profile and test in a clean environment to isolate profile corruption.
- Check enterprise policies: Managed devices can disable experimental browser features.
Privacy, permissions, and account behavior
Chrome’s PDF annotation and Drive upload naturally involve your Google account, so it’s worth understanding how data moves.
- What’s uploaded: You’re saving your annotated PDF, not just metadata. That means your marks become part of the file content.
- Where it uploads: Either the folder you choose or a default destination. Always confirm the folder and filename in Drive.
- Account consistency: If you’re signed into multiple Google accounts, Chrome may use the active profile account. Double-check before uploading.
- Workspace or school accounts: Admin settings can restrict writing to Drive or limit external sharing.
Alternatives if you can’t use Chrome’s PDF tools
If your Chrome build doesn’t show annotation upload yet, don’t force it. Use a workflow that still keeps the annotated PDF in Drive.
Use Google Drive’s built-in PDF viewer (when available)
Open the PDF in Drive and look for markup options in the viewer UI. Some Drive experiences support annotations, and the result stays tied to the Drive document.
Use Adobe Acrobat Reader for annotations
Download the PDF, annotate in Adobe Acrobat Reader, and then upload the updated file back to Drive. This is reliable if you need consistency across teams, but it’s a manual step.
Use a third-party workflow via WordPress or npm-hosted tools (only if needed)
If you run a publishing workflow (for example: a site hosted with WordPress) and need server-side processing, you can route PDFs through specialized tooling. For most users, keep it simple: edit locally, then upload the final annotated PDF to Drive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Chrome vs. Microsoft Edge and other options
Edge and other Chromium-based browsers often share parts of the rendering stack, but PDF annotation UIs and Drive integrations can still differ.
| Feature | Chrome | Other options |
|---|---|---|
| Split View inside browser | Integrated multitasking; controls vary by OS and build | May require OS tiling or different in-browser tooling |
| PDF annotation UI | In-browser viewer with markup tools (build-dependent) | Often supported, but upload-to-Drive flow can differ |
| Save workflow | Drive upload designed for keeping files organized | May require manual download/upload |
If your work depends on annotating PDFs and keeping everything in one Drive folder, Chrome’s Drive upload workflow is the most direct fit when it’s available.

Common mistakes that break the workflow
- Wrong Google account: You upload to a different Drive because the browser profile is signed into another account.
- Attempting to annotate the wrong file type: Some viewers or enterprise settings can block markup for certain PDF restrictions.
- Saving before the viewer finishes loading: Wait for the annotation toolbar to fully initialize, especially on slower connections.
- Destination folder permission errors: If you can view a folder but not write to it, the upload will fail.
- Extension conflicts: Script blockers and privacy tools can break Drive pickers and upload dialogs.
FAQs
Do I need ChromeOS, Windows, or macOS to use Split View?
You can use Split View across major platforms, but availability and UI wording vary by OS and Chrome version. If you don’t see the Split View control, update Chrome and test in a clean profile.
Will Chrome overwrite my original PDF in Drive?
Usually, Chrome creates a new annotated output (or a Drive file version) rather than silently overwriting. Check the filename and modification details in Drive after the upload completes.
What if the annotation tools aren’t visible?
First, confirm you’re using Chrome’s PDF viewer (Settings → PDF documents). Then update Chrome and temporarily disable extensions that might modify the viewer UI.

Often yes, but Drive upload behavior can vary depending on whether the original file is tied to Drive. If upload prompts don’t appear, try opening the same PDF directly from Google Drive and annotate from there.
Is this feature available on enterprise-managed devices?
Some managed environments can restrict experimental browser capabilities or Drive write access. If Split View or Drive upload is missing or failing, check with your admin and test using a non-managed account if possible.
Bottom Line
Chrome’s Split View helps you compare and work side-by-side, while the PDF annotation + Drive upload flow keeps your reviewed documents organized where you already store your files. Together, they cut down on tab switching and manual save steps.
If you don’t see the features yet, the fastest path is to confirm your Chrome version, ensure PDFs open in Chrome’s viewer, and verify Drive permissions on your destination folder.
