What’s changing in Google Calendar
Historically, Google Calendar’s holiday feature was a single on/off holiday calendar per locale (for example, “Holidays in United States”). If you wanted fewer holidays, the only dependable option was to disable that entire holiday calendar, which hides all holiday events for that locale.
Google Calendar will let you hide specific holiday entries within the holidays feed, so you can keep holidays you want (and hide the rest) without losing everything.

Why hiding specific holidays matters
Holiday events are useful, but they can quickly become noise—especially if you: work across countries, follow multiple religious or cultural calendars, or share a single calendar with family and coworkers.
- Less visual clutter: fewer banners and all-day blocks across the month.
- Better planning: you’ll see the dates that actually affect your schedule.
- Cleaner sharing: shared calendars become easier to read when you don’t show every holiday by default.
What you can hide (and what you usually can’t)
With the new approach, you’re expected to hide individual holiday events inside the holiday calendar feed, rather than toggling the entire holiday layer.
In most setups, you can still expect these constraints:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- It’s tied to the holiday feed: the control applies to holidays provided through Google’s holiday calendars.
- It won’t edit public holidays for other people: your visibility changes are per account/view, not a global calendar edit.
- Custom events follow your own rules: your personally created events remain unaffected; this feature is about the built-in holiday layer.
How to hide specific holidays once the new option appears
Google rolls features out gradually, so the exact UI label can vary. The pattern is usually the same: you open the holiday calendar settings and you’ll see controls at the holiday level instead of only the calendar-level toggle.
On the web (Google Calendar in a browser)
Use a desktop browser for the most consistent UI. Steps below assume the typical Google Calendar layout.

- Confirm changes by returning to the calendar view. The all-day holiday blocks should disappear for those entries.
If you don’t see a per-holiday list, you’re likely on a version of the UI that hasn’t rolled out yet (see workarounds below).
On Android (Google Calendar app)
The Android app typically mirrors the web functionality, but the menus can be slightly different.

If you don’t see the option yet: reliable workarounds
Because Google features roll out in waves, you may not see per-holiday controls right away. These workarounds are dependable in the meantime.
Workaround 1: Temporarily disable the entire holiday calendar
This is the only built-in option when per-holiday control isn’t available.

- Open Google Calendar settings or the calendar list sidebar.
- Find the holiday calendar for your locale (for example, “Holidays in United States”).
- Toggle it off.
- If you later want the events back, toggle it on again.
Downside: you lose all holidays for that locale, not just the ones you dislike.
Workaround 2: Create a personal calendar and re-add only what you care about
If you need precise control and can tolerate a bit of setup, this is the closest substitute.
- Create a new calendar in Google Calendar named something like My Holidays (Custom).
- For each holiday you want to keep, add the holiday as an event or copy it from the holiday feed.
- Keep the built-in holiday calendar turned off to avoid duplicates.
- Use your custom calendar for planning and sharing.
Downside: you may need to update it if Google changes holiday definitions in the future.
Workaround 3: Use event filtering in your view (limited)
Some views support filtering by calendar source, but holiday visibility is often controlled primarily by the calendar layer itself.
- In your calendar view, confirm which calendars are enabled in the left-side list.
- If filtering is available, select your holiday source to hide/show it.
- If you don’t get per-holiday filtering, assume you can’t selectively hide within the feed yet.
Downside: this usually behaves like calendar-level toggling.

Gotchas that cause the wrong holidays to stay visible
Even when the feature is available, a few common issues can make it seem like it’s not working.
- You’re toggling the wrong holiday locale: “Holidays in United States” and “Holidays in Canada” are separate sources.
- Multiple holiday calendars are enabled: if you added more than one locale, you might only hide items in one feed.
- Duplicate events from another calendar: if you imported holidays elsewhere, they may not be affected by the holiday feed toggles.
- Work profile vs personal profile: on mobile, account selection can be subtle when you have multiple Google logins.
Troubleshooting when hiding doesn’t work
If the UI shows your changes but the holidays still appear, try these in order. They solve the majority of “it didn’t take” cases.
Check the holiday calendar you’re toggling
Open the calendar list and confirm the same holiday source you edited is the one being displayed. If you’re viewing a different month/location locale, the event set won’t match your edits.
Refresh + re-authenticate
On the web, hard refresh the page. On mobile, fully close the app and reopen it. If you still see the holidays, sign out and back in to your Google account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBrowser/app cache issues
Try an incognito/private window on desktop to rule out stale cached UI. On iPhone/iPad and Android, updating the Google Calendar app to the latest version can also fix mismatched feature flags.

Time zone and locale mismatches
All-day holiday events are date-based, but your local time zone can affect how events render around midnight boundaries. Confirm your device time zone is correct and that your Google account locale matches the holiday feed you’re modifying.
Comparison: Hide specific holidays vs disabling the holiday calendar
| Approach | Control level | Best for | Main downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide specific holidays (new option) | Per-holiday within the holiday feed | Keeping most holidays visible while removing a few | May require a rollout update to appear in your UI |
| Disable the entire holiday calendar | Calendar-level on/off | Eliminating holiday clutter completely | All or nothing—no selective removal |
| Custom calendar with only selected holidays | Event-by-event (manual) | Max control and predictable sharing | More setup and possible maintenance |
FAQs about hiding holidays in Google Calendar
When will the feature be available?
Google typically rolls updates out gradually. If you don’t see per-holiday toggles yet, check again after updating the Google Calendar app or revisiting the web UI.
Will this change affect shared calendars I collaborate on?
In most cases, holiday visibility controls apply to your view of the holiday feed tied to your account. If someone else shares your calendar, they may not see your hidden choices unless the change is made on their side.
Can I hide holidays for a different country than my account locale?
Yes, as long as you have that holiday calendar enabled. Make sure you’re editing the correct holiday source in your calendar list (for example, “Holidays in Japan” vs your default locale).
Why do I still see certain holidays after hiding them?
Most common causes are duplicate holiday calendars, imported events from another source, or you toggling a different locale/calendar than the one producing the event blocks.
Does this work on iPhone, iPad, Android, and the web?
The feature is intended to work across platforms, but you may see it on web first. When it’s available, the settings should let you hide individual holidays on each platform.
Bottom Line
Google Calendar’s upcoming ability to hide specific holidays should solve a long-standing problem: holiday clutter without forcing you to turn off an entire holiday calendar. When the per-holiday toggles appear in your settings, you’ll be able to keep only the dates that actually matter to your schedule.
Recommended Free Tools
If the option still isn’t visible, you’re not stuck—use the holiday calendar toggle for quick cleanup, or build a custom calendar for full control until the rollout reaches your account.
