In Drive for desktop, first check your internet connection, restart the app and computer, then use the specific error message to choose the next fix. Before disconnecting your account, copy the local Lost and found folder somewhere safe; disconnecting deletes it.
Why the old Backup and Sync fix may no longer apply
Google announced Drive for desktop as the replacement for both Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream. If you are still using Backup and Sync, get the current client from Google’s official Drive download page rather than downloading an old installer from a third-party site. Google’s guidance and the client interface can change, so follow the labels shown in your installed version.

Try the low-risk checks first
- Check the connection. Confirm the computer is online and the connection is stable. A firewall, proxy, or other network setting can prevent Drive for desktop from syncing.
- Restart Drive for desktop. Quit the app, open it again, and check whether syncing resumes.
- Restart the computer. If restarting the app does not help, reboot the computer and check the app’s notifications or error list before making account or file changes.
Google’s basic troubleshooting guidance includes checking the connection, restarting the app and computer, reconnecting the account if needed, and reinstalling the latest client as a later step. See Google Drive Help: Fix problems in Drive for desktop.
Match the error to the likely cause
Use the app’s reported error to choose a branch rather than resetting everything at once. Google describes the following common causes and remedies in its Drive for desktop troubleshooting guide.

Google storage is full
Free up space in the Google account or, if appropriate, obtain additional storage through Google One. If the file belongs to someone else and that owner’s storage is full, ask the owner to manage their storage or transfer ownership; clearing space in your account may not resolve the owner’s quota issue.
You do not have permission to read, write, or edit
For a folder on the computer, check that the signed-in user has permission to read and write to it. For a Google Drive file, request edit access from its owner. For a shared drive, contact its manager or administrator.

A file is missing from the computer
Check the computer’s recycle bin or trash. If the file was moved there, restore it and allow Drive for desktop to sync again.

Google says Drive for desktop retries later when a bandwidth or transfer limit is reached. If syncing does not recover, wait a day and restart the app.

A local Google file appears corrupted
Google’s suggested remedy is to make a copy of the original file in Drive on the web, then delete the invalid local Google file. The item may need to be shared again afterward.
Antivirus repeatedly stops the app
If antivirus scanning repeatedly causes Drive for desktop to stop, Google suggests excluding the app from the virus scan. Keep the change narrow and specific to Drive for desktop; this is not a reason to disable security protection generally.

A system cleaner was recently used
Google warns that system-cleaner apps can edit Drive configuration data and cause errors or data loss. If syncing problems began after using a cleaner, avoid running it again while troubleshooting and consult Google’s information about apps that can affect Drive for desktop.

Protect unsynced files before reconnecting your account
Disconnecting and reconnecting the account can help, but do it only after safeguarding local data. Google warns that disconnecting deletes the local Lost and found folder. Copy that folder’s contents to a safe location first, and preserve any files the app offers to move to the desktop.

- Locate the local Lost and found folder and copy its contents to a separate safe location.
- If Drive for desktop offers to move unsynced files to the desktop, keep those files rather than discarding them.
- Disconnect and reconnect the account using the controls in the installed app.
- Sign in again and choose the Drive folder location carefully.
Because the exact controls can vary with the app version, use Google’s current reconnection instructions if the labels in your app differ.
Reinstall Drive for desktop only after simpler fixes fail
If connection checks, restarts, and the error-specific remedy have not helped, download and install the latest Drive for desktop release from Google’s official download page. Reinstalling the current client is a later troubleshooting step; an old Backup and Sync installer is not a supported replacement.
