Your six-digit Google Authenticator code is shown in the app beside the account or service you’re trying to sign in to. Open Authenticator, find the matching entry, and enter its current code at that service’s sign-in prompt. There is no single universal code for every account, and the app can generate codes without internet access or mobile service.
Find the code for the account you’re signing in to
- Open the Google Authenticator app on the device where you set it up.
- Find the entry whose account or service name matches the sign-in prompt. If you have several entries, check the account identifier as well as the service name.
- Enter the displayed code in that service’s verification field before it expires.
Google Authenticator generates one-time verification codes for accounts and services that have been configured to use an authenticator app. For your Google Account, Authenticator must first be set up in your account’s 2-Step Verification settings. A third-party site or app must likewise have been configured to use Authenticator; Google cannot provide one code that works across different services. Google says codes can be generated without an internet connection or mobile service. Google Account Help: Get verification codes with Google Authenticator.

If the code is rejected
- Check the entry. Make sure the code belongs to the exact service and account you are signing in to, rather than another entry with a similar name.
- Use the current code. Authenticator codes expire. If the displayed code has changed while you were entering it, use the current one.
- Check the device clock. Google says Authenticator relies on the operating system’s time setting. Make sure the device has the correct time and time zone and that its time is synced. Google Account Help: Fix problems with Google Authenticator.
Google’s help documentation notes that the time-correction setting is no longer available in Authenticator version 7.0; follow the time settings available on your device rather than looking for that option in the app.

Know whether you need an Authenticator code or a backup code
The rotating code displayed in Authenticator is different from a Google Account backup code. Google backup codes are eight digits and can be used for the second verification step when other methods are unavailable. Each backup code works once; generating a new set makes the previous set inactive. Google says backup codes are not available to download for users in the Advanced Protection Program. Keep saved codes private and secure. Google Account Help: Sign in with backup codes.

If your codes have disappeared or you changed phones
Check the Google Account in Authenticator
If codes are missing, check whether Authenticator is signed in to the Google Account where they were saved. You may have used a different Google Account. If you used Authenticator without signing in to a Google Account, those codes stay on that device and are not available on your other devices through account sync.
Restore synced codes or transfer them manually
If your codes were synced, sign in to the same Google Account in Authenticator on the new device. If you used the app without account sync, Google documents a manual transfer: export selected accounts as QR code(s) from the old device, then import them on the new one. Manual transfer requires access to the old device. See Google’s Authenticator instructions for its current steps.

If your phone is lost or unavailable
The verification options shown at sign-in depend on what you set up beforehand. Google lists possible alternatives such as another phone already signed in to your account, another phone number added to 2-Step Verification, a saved backup code, a previously added hardware security key, a passkey on another device, a trusted device, or account recovery. None is guaranteed to be available for every account. Google Account Help: Sign in with a phone.
For a lost device, Google recommends signing out of that device and changing your Google Account password. If you cannot complete verification, use Google’s account recovery flow. Google warns against third-party services that claim to recover accounts or passwords. If the missing code belongs to a third-party service, check that service’s own recovery process; Google’s account recovery options do not recover every service’s authenticator setup.

Keep verification codes private
Enter a code only in the sign-in flow you started. Never tell or send a verification code to someone claiming to be support: Google warns that scammers may use codes to take over accounts and says it will not call you to ask for one. Google also notes that verification by text message or phone call can be vulnerable to attacks that target phone numbers. Google Account Help: Turn on 2-Step Verification.
