This guide covers what the new icon means, how to confirm you’re updated, and what to do if your device hasn’t received it yet or the icon doesn’t swap cleanly.

What’s changing: the new Google app G icon on Android
The update refreshes the app launcher icon for the Google app on Android. The headline is visual: you’ll see the new G icon appear once the update is installed and your launcher refreshes the icon pack for that app.
Because this is a staged rollout, different devices may receive it at different times, even if they’re on the same Android version or have similar hardware.

Why icon updates matter (and what it does not change)
Icon changes are mostly branding and UI polish. They usually don’t change what the Google app can do, your sign-in state, or your account history.
That said, icon updates can indirectly expose launcher quirks—especially if you’re using a custom home screen, icon packs, or shortcuts that cache the old icon.
Is the update available for your device right now?
Google typically rolls out app updates in waves. Two phones running Android 14 (or Android 13) can receive the same update at different times because of server-side targeting.
Check availability using these quick signals:
- If you see an update for Google in Google Play, you’re in the current rollout bucket.
- If no update appears, you may still be waiting for your turn—or Play Store may be delaying downloads on your network.
- If you updated but icon didn’t change, it may be a launcher cache/shortcut issue (covered below).
How to update the Google app from Google Play
Use the official channel first—this is the only method that keeps updates predictable and avoids signature/compatibility issues.
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Google.
- Tap Update if you see it.
- If you see Installed, your version is current for your device right now.
- After installing, return to your home screen and wait 10–30 seconds for the launcher to refresh.
If you use Wi‑Fi, try switching networks once (Wi‑Fi ↔ mobile data) if the update doesn’t download after a few minutes.

How to confirm you have the new G icon
Once the update is installed, confirm the new icon in two places to reduce false negatives:
- Home screen: look at the Google app icon you tap most often.
- App drawer: swipe up to open your launcher’s app list and search for Google.
If your icon changed in the app drawer but not on the home screen, you likely have an old shortcut pinned to your home screen (common with some launchers and icon customization tools).
If you don’t see the new icon yet: rollout delays and how to speed things up
It’s normal for staged rollouts to take days. Your best move is to verify you’re on the latest available version rather than trying to force-install random builds.
To speed up the process safely, try:
- In Google Play Store, tap your profile icon (top right) → Manage apps & device.
- Open Updates available and apply any pending updates.
- Restart your phone once the update finishes installing.
- Reconnect to Wi‑Fi and keep the screen on briefly while Play completes background steps.
Troubleshooting icon and launcher issues
If you’ve updated the Google app but the icon still shows the old look, the fix is usually a cache/shortcut refresh. Work through these in order.
Fix 1: Force close the app and refresh the launcher
Close and reopen to trigger UI asset refresh.
- Open Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Tap Google.
- Tap Force stop.
- Return to your home screen and relaunch Google from the app drawer.
Fix 2: Clear cache for the Google app
Cache clearing is low risk compared to data clearing, and it can refresh app icons and resources.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Google.
- Tap Storage.
- Select Clear cache.
- Reopen the Google app.
Fix 3: Remove and re-add the app shortcut (launcher-specific)
If your home screen uses a pinned shortcut, remove it and create a new one so the launcher pulls the latest icon asset.
Recommended Free Tools
- Long-press the Google app shortcut on your home screen.
- Tap Remove or Delete.
- Open the app drawer → find Google.
- Long-press it → choose Add to home (wording varies by launcher).
This is the most common fix when the app icon changes in the app drawer but not on the home screen.
Fix 4: Update your launcher and Android System WebView
Some launchers cache icons more aggressively. Keeping system components current helps the refresh process.
- Update your Launcher app via Play Store (if it has updates).
- Update Android System WebView and Google Play services via Play Store.
Fix 5: Verify storage and permissions health
If your device is low on storage, apps may download but fail to update resources fully.
- Check free space in Settings → Storage.
- Ensure you have at least a few hundred MB available.
- If prompted by the system, allow any missing permissions related to app display or notifications (rare for icons, but worth checking).
Can you force the icon change without waiting?
You can’t reliably “force” a server-side staged rollout. But you can eliminate local reasons the new icon isn’t showing.

Option A: Wait for staged rollout (most reliable)
For most users, waiting is the cleanest path. Once the update is delivered to your device, the icon should update normally on first refresh.
Option B: Pull the update by re-checking Play Store and restarting
Do this when the update appears delayed or stuck:
- Open Google Play Store → tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & device.
- Go to Updates available and refresh.
- Restart the phone after any installs finish.
Option C: Clear Play Store and Play Services cache (when downloads stall)
Use this if Play Store shows no update but you know it’s out for others—or if it fails to download.
- Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage → Clear cache.
- Settings → Apps → Google Play services → Storage → Clear cache.
- Restart the phone and try the Play Store update check again.
What if you updated but the icon still looks old?
When you’re sure the Google app is updated, the most likely causes are:
- Home screen shortcut cache (fix by removing/re-adding the shortcut).
- Launcher caching behavior (fix by forcing close/restart, and updating the launcher if possible).
- App resource refresh delay (wait 1–2 minutes after install; some launchers update icon assets slightly later).
If none of the above works, consider checking for Android system updates in Settings → System → System update.

The update described here targets the Google app icon. That’s different from icons for Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, or Google Photos.

FAQs
Will this update change what my Google app does?
No. An icon refresh is primarily visual. Functional changes (search behavior, Discover, notifications) would be handled through separate app updates and feature flags.
Why does my friend have the new G icon but I don’t?
Staged rollouts can target devices in waves. Even if you’re on the same Android version, timing can differ based on region, device model, and server-side eligibility.
My Google icon changed in the app drawer, but not on my home screen—what now?
Remove the home screen shortcut and add it again from the app drawer. That forces the launcher to pull the latest icon asset.
Should I clear app data to fix the icon?
Try cache first. Clearing data can log you out or reset preferences inside the app, so it’s unnecessary for typical icon refresh problems.
Is it safe to download the update from a third-party site to get the icon early?
No. Stick to Google Play. Third-party APK sources can carry malware risk and may not match your device’s compatibility requirements.
Bottom Line
The new Google app update rolling out on Android brings a refreshed G icon, mostly a visual change. If you don’t see it immediately, that’s normal—staged rollouts and launcher caching are the usual reasons.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Update via Google Play, confirm in the app drawer, and if needed remove/re-add the home screen shortcut to force the latest icon to render.
