A reported Google app update on Android is rolling out now, bringing a refreshed home-screen look: a new ‘G’ icon. If you’ve noticed the icon change (or you’re expecting it and haven’t seen it yet), this guide covers what’s likely happening and what you can do to verify the update on your device.
Icon changes can be purely cosmetic—or tied to app branding assets. Either way, rollout timing matters: many updates arrive in waves based on device, region, and Play Store delivery rules.

What the new ‘G’ icon update means
The headline change is the app’s launcher icon: the familiar Google “G” appears with a refreshed design. For most users, there’s no functional difference—your searches, Discover feed behavior, and voice actions stay the same unless the update also includes feature changes.

Check whether the update is already on your phone
Before you force anything, confirm your current state. This avoids chasing icon caching issues when you’re actually still on an older build.
Verify the Google app version (Android)
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Select Google.
- Tap App details or About.
- Look for Version.
Compare that version to the one shown in the Play Store listing (see the next section).
Confirm the icon changed where it counts
On some launchers, old icons can linger on home screens. Check both the app drawer and your home screen shortcut.

How to update the Google app on Android
The cleanest way to get the new ‘G’ icon is a manual refresh through Google Play. Use these steps even if you think the update is already rolling out—manual checking triggers Play Store’s availability logic for your account/device.
Update via Google Play Store
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Google.
- Open the app listing for Google (the developer should be Google LLC).
- Tap Update if you see it.
- Wait for the download to finish, then open the app once.
If there’s no Update button, you’re likely already on the latest version for your device.

Force a Play Store check (optional)
- In Play Store, tap your profile icon (top right).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap About.
- Look for Play Store version (not required, but useful for troubleshooting).
Then return to the Google app listing and re-check for an Update button.
What to do if the new icon doesn’t show up
It’s common for the app to be updated successfully while the home screen icon stays old. That can happen due to launcher caching or because the icon resource is delivered in a staged rollout.

- Restart your phone. This helps refresh cached launcher resources.
- Remove and re-add the shortcut. Long-press the old Google icon on the home screen → Remove → find Google in the app drawer → add it back.
- Check the app drawer icon. If the drawer icon is updated but the home screen isn’t, you’re dealing with a cached shortcut.
Troubleshooting rollout problems
If you still don’t see the new ‘G’ icon after updating, treat it as a caching or version mismatch issue first, then a Play Store delivery issue.
1) Clear launcher icon cache (launcher-dependent)
Many launchers handle caching internally. The exact steps vary by brand (Samsung One UI, Pixel Launcher, Xiaomi/MIUI, etc.). If you don’t know where to look, use the “remove and re-add shortcut” method above—it’s launcher-agnostic.
2) Clear Google app cache (safe, but may refresh data)
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Select Google.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen the Google app.
3) Re-check the installed version matches the Play Store listing
Open Play Store listing → scroll to the App version details area if available. If you can’t see it, look at the store’s “Updated” timestamp and compare it to your installed version.

Some devices throttle background activity, which can delay resources that visually refresh later. Check for battery optimization settings affecting Google Play.

Why icon updates roll out in waves
Play Store doesn’t always push every visual asset change to every device at the same time. Rollouts often consider country, Android version, device tier, and phased delivery to reduce risk.
That’s why you might see the new icon on a friend’s phone today but not yours for a few days. In many cases, the fix is simply waiting for the next staged delivery—without repeatedly reinstalling the app.
Common user issues and fixes
Here are the most frequent “it didn’t change” scenarios and how to handle each.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| App drawer icon changed, home screen icon didn’t | Home shortcut is cached | Remove the shortcut and add it back from the app drawer |
| No update button in Play Store | You may already be on the latest build for your device | Verify Google app version in Settings → Apps → Google |
| Icon changed but looks blurry or mismatched | Launcher scaling/resolution cache | Restart phone; re-add shortcut |
| After updating, icon still won’t refresh | Cache or launcher resource not updating | Clear cache for Google; restart; re-add shortcut |
Alternatives while you wait
If you need the updated icon immediately and you’re comfortable with more hands-on steps, you can use an alternative method—but only if it fits your risk tolerance.

Reinstall the Google app (last resort)
Reinstalling can force Play Store to re-fetch the latest package and resources. However, it’s more disruptive than a cache reset because you may lose local app state.
- Open Google Play Store → search for Google.
- Tap Uninstall (if available).
- Then tap Install again.
On some devices, Google may be preinstalled and “uninstall” may mean disabling or removing updates instead—so confirm before doing anything irreversible.
Use the app icon from the app drawer
Even if your home screen shortcut is stuck, the app drawer icon often updates first. You can also move the app to the dock or create a new home screen shortcut from the updated drawer icon.

Is this change just an icon update?
Most reports around this kind of rollout are primarily visual. Still, the update is a new app build, and the app could include small behind-the-scenes fixes. Check the Play Store listing’s “What’s new” for release notes tied to your version.
Why do I not see the new ‘G’ icon yet even after updating?
Common reasons include staged rollout timing and home-screen shortcut caching. Verify the Google app version you installed, then remove and re-add the home shortcut from the app drawer.

Will updating to the newest version guarantee I get the new icon?
It dramatically increases your odds, but staged delivery can still delay the icon asset on some devices. If your installed version is already the latest for your device, waiting a few days is often the most reliable path.
Will clearing cache or reinstalling break my Google account?
Clearing cache generally doesn’t log you out or break your account. Reinstalling may reset local settings or feed preferences depending on device and app behavior, so it’s best treated as a last step.
Where exactly should I look to see the updated icon?
Check both the app drawer and the home screen shortcut. If only one changes, you’re likely dealing with shortcut caching rather than the app itself not updating.
How long does a rollout usually take?
For icon and branding updates, delays of a few days are common due to wave-based distribution. If you still see no change after several days, confirm your installed version and try the shortcut refresh steps.
Bottom Line
The new ‘G’ icon in the Google app update is mostly about visual branding, and it should show up once your device receives the updated build and icon resources. If you’re impatient, confirm the installed version, then refresh the home-screen shortcut by removing and re-adding it from the app drawer.
If the update itself is present but the icon won’t change, restart and clear the Google app cache before reinstalling. That sequence resolves the majority of “icon stuck” cases without unnecessary disruption.
