What AI Mode and Live access are (and aren’t)
AI Mode
AI Mode is the part of the Google app that routes your prompt into an AI-assisted response flow. Depending on rollout and settings, it may also change the response format (for example, more guided answers, follow-up suggestions, or structured outputs).
AI Mode is not a guarantee of real-time updates unless Live access is specifically involved.
Live access
Live access refers to using current information sources or real-time context within the app’s AI/search experiences. In practice, you’ll notice it when the app can treat certain requests as “current” rather than purely “from the web as indexed.”

How to use AI Mode in the Google app
AI Mode generally works as an “assistant prompt” experience inside the Google app. The goal is to phrase your request clearly and then refine with follow-up questions.
Step-by-step
- Open the Google app.
- Tap the AI Mode entry (wording may vary, but look for a dedicated AI label).
- Enter your prompt in the AI input field.
- Send the prompt.
- If you see follow-up suggestions, tap one or ask a targeted follow-up (for example, constraints, format, or audience).
Write prompts that get better results
AI Mode tends to respond best when you specify format and constraints. For example:

Feature rollouts commonly require a recent build. Update the Google app through your app store, then force-close and reopen the app.
2) Check for an eligibility gap
Some tests are account-based or region-based. If your friend has it but you don’t, you may be in a different rollout cohort.

3) Restart and refresh permissions
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Find Google → Permissions.
- Reconfirm permissions that Live might use (commonly location).
- Reopen the Google app.
4) Clear app cache (Android) or reinstall (iOS)
If the UI isn’t loading consistently, clearing cached data can refresh feature flags on Android. On iPhone, a reinstall can help, but it’s more disruptive.
5) Log out and back in

Use other Google surfaces when relevant
Some capabilities overlap with Google Search and other Google experiences. If your goal is learning or summarization, you may prefer a different workflow until Live becomes available to your account.
Try again after the next update
