If the Google app (or a Google-powered browser view) suddenly puts the Search bar at the bottom, you’re not imagining it. UI placement changes can roll out gradually, vary by device and screen size, and sometimes depend on experiments (A/B tests) tied to your account or app version.
This guide walks you through identifying exactly what you’re seeing and then getting the layout back—where possible—on Android and iPhone/iPad. If the change can’t be reverted from the app UI, you’ll still get practical workarounds and a troubleshooting path that usually fixes “stuck” layouts.

Quick question (for accuracy): Are you using the Google app specifically, or Chrome? The steps differ because each app controls its UI differently.

A bottom-positioned Search bar typically means Google is optimizing for thumb reach, one-handed use, or a new navigation layout. In many cases, the “bottom Search bar” is part of the main Google app home/search experience, not your device’s browser chrome.

Because Google rolls updates over time, you might see the change only on one device. You can also see it after an update, a server-side experiment, or when the app detects a particular layout mode (tablet vs. phone, gesture navigation vs. buttons, etc.).
Before you change anything: confirm where the bar lives
Take 20 seconds to confirm what UI you’re actually dealing with. This prevents wasted effort when the fix exists in a different app.
Check these clues
- Google app: You open an app labeled Google (not Chrome), then the Search bar appears at the bottom of that Google interface.
- Chrome: You’re in Chrome and see any address/search-related UI tied to Chrome tabs, toolbars, or bottom toolbars.
- Browser inside Google: Some results or pages open within a Google web view; the Search bar placement can be tied to the Google app container, not the site itself.
Once you know which one it is, use the matching section below.

Android: fix the Google app bottom Search bar
On Android, the most reliable fixes are: update (or downgrade) the Google app, clear cache, and check whether Google offers a layout toggle for the bottom search experience.
Option 1: Toggle the bottom search/search suggestions setting (if available)
Some builds include a UI preference that changes where the search elements appear. If your version doesn’t show the toggle, skip to the next options.
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile icon (top-right on most layouts).
- Go to Settings.
- Look for items related to Search, Shortcuts, Home, or Navigation (wording varies by version).
- If you find a toggle related to bottom search/search bar, turn it off and restart the app.
If you can’t find anything related to layout placement, it’s likely controlled by a server-side experiment for your device/app version.

- Warm Tips: Please set your device(4"-6") in landscape or portrait mode, and set the device (6"-8") in landscape mode, which will provide more stability.
Option 2: Update or roll back the Google app version
Since the behavior can be introduced by a specific Google app release, updating can fix it, or rolling back can restore the older layout—depending on what changed.

- Open Google Play Store → search for Google.
- Tap Update if available.
- If you already updated and the bottom Search bar is new, consider a rollback by installing an older signed APK from a trusted source (only if you know what you’re doing).
- After changing versions, force-close the app: Settings → Apps → Google → Force stop, then reopen.
Gotcha: Server-side experiments can re-apply the layout even after you roll back, especially if the experiment is tied to the account.
Option 3: Clear cache (not data) for the Google app
This often fixes “stuck UI” where Google’s stored UI state doesn’t match the latest layout configuration.
- Open Settings on Android.
- Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Find and tap Google.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Do not tap Clear data unless you’re okay with resetting app state.
- Reopen the Google app and check if the Search bar moved.
Option 4: Reset app preferences and permissions
If the app layout depends on gesture/search integrations, resetting can help after updates.
- Android Settings → Apps.
- Open App permissions or Default apps.
- Reset defaults if you see broken handlers.
- Restart the phone.
This doesn’t target the search bar directly, but it fixes some UI rendering and intent-handling problems that appear “as layout changes.”

Option 1: Update Google and iOS
UI changes often depend on specific app builds and iOS versions.
- Open App Store.
- Search for Google.
- Tap Update.
- Then check iOS: Settings → General → Software Update.
- Install any available iOS update, then restart the device.
After reboot, open the Google app and verify the Search bar position.
Option 2: Clear the Google app cache via storage settings
Some Google apps expose “offload” or storage tools. If available, use them instead of reinstalling immediately.
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage).
- Find Google.
- Look for Offload App and/or any storage cleanup option.
- If “Offload App” exists, choose it and then Reinstall App.
If you only see basic options, use the reinstall method below.
Option 3: Reinstall the Google app
Reinstalling refreshes app assets and can reset a misapplied UI experiment state.
- Hold the Google app icon.
- Tap Remove App → Delete App.
- Go to App Store and install the latest Google app.
- After install, sign in again if needed and check the Search bar placement.
Gotcha: If the bottom placement is controlled server-side, the reinstalled app might pull the same experiment result immediately.

Alternative: If you meant Chrome, not the Google app
People often describe this change as “Google app puts Search bar at the bottom,” but the actual behavior can come from Chrome’s UI. Confirm first, then use the Chrome-specific fixes.
Android Chrome: adjust search and tab bar behaviors
Chrome on Android can change toolbar behavior based on gestures and UI updates.
- Open Chrome.
- Tap ⋮ (menu) → Settings.
- Check for sections related to Search, Tabs, or Homepage (wording varies).
- Update Chrome via Play Store.
- If behavior changed right after an update, consider clearing Chrome’s cache: Settings → Apps → Chrome → Storage → Clear cache.
iOS Safari/Chrome: check Share/Tab/Address bar settings
On iPhone/iPad, the address bar behavior is controlled by the browser UI, not Google. If you’re in Chrome for iOS, update it and look for any layout or toolbar toggles in Chrome’s settings.
- Open Chrome → Settings.
- Update Chrome from the App Store.
- For Safari, verify there isn’t a focus-mode or accessibility setting affecting the browser toolbar.
If you tell me which app and device model you’re using, I can narrow the exact path.
When the setting won’t change: feature flags, A/B tests, and rollouts
Google frequently tests UI variations. That means your app might be receiving a layout experiment that you can’t opt out of from normal settings. When this happens, the only true “fix” is waiting for the rollout to end, updating to a version that removes the experiment, or switching to an alternative app experience.
A/B testing can also be tied to:
- Device form factor (phone vs. tablet)
- Operating system version
- Language/region
- Whether you recently updated the Google app
- Your Google account’s experiment enrollment

- Update the Google app (and Chrome if relevant).
- Clear cache for the app (Google, or Chrome).
- Force stop and reopen.
- Reinstall if cache clearing didn’t help.
- Test another device logged into the same account to see if the experiment is account/device-specific.
- If you’re willing to attempt a rollback on Android, install a prior Google app version and retest after force stop.
Common mistakes that keep the bar at the bottom
- Changing the wrong app: For example, adjusting Chrome settings when the bottom bar is coming from the Google app home UI.
- Clearing data: “Clear data” resets sign-in state and often doesn’t disable server-side experiments.
- Skipping force stop: Some UI changes won’t fully apply until you restart the app process.
- Testing without updates: If your device is on an older app build, fixes won’t match.
FAQ
Why did the Search bar move to the bottom without me changing settings?
It’s usually caused by a Google app update or a server-side A/B test that adjusts the layout. These roll out gradually, so you may only notice it after an update or on one device.
Can I permanently move the Search bar back to the top?
Sometimes. If Google provides a layout toggle in your version, you can change it. If it’s controlled by an experiment, there may be no user-facing setting—your best options are updating, cache-clearing/reinstalling, or waiting for the rollout to change.
Does this affect all websites in the browser?
Usually no—if the bar is part of the Google app UI, it affects the Google experience. If you’re seeing it inside Chrome, then it’s Chrome’s UI behavior.
Will clearing cache or reinstalling remove my searches or account?
Clearing cache typically doesn’t remove your account. Reinstalling may log you out depending on how the app stores session data, so be ready to sign in again.
What if nothing changes after reinstalling?
That strongly suggests the bottom placement is controlled server-side for your account/device. Try again after a few app updates, and test on a second device to confirm the experiment scope.
Bottom Line
If the Google app puts the Search bar at the bottom, start by confirming whether you’re using the Google app or Chrome—then update, clear cache, and force stop. On iPhone/iPad, updating and reinstalling are usually the most effective.
If you don’t see any layout toggle, the change is likely from a rollout experiment. In that case, the practical fixes are verification, cache refresh, and waiting for your build (or server-side assignment) to shift.
