The Google app on Android has been making its Search widget easier to customize, so you don’t have to settle for the default look and behavior. Depending on your device and Google app version, you may be able to adjust what the widget shows, how it launches, and how it fits your Home screen.
This guide walks you through the practical ways to customize the Search widget, what to expect on popular Android launchers, and what to do when the options you want simply don’t appear.

What changed in the Google app Search widget customization
Instead of treating the Search widget as a fixed element, newer Google app releases have been rolling out more “in-place” configuration. That means you can often reach customization controls directly from the widget on your Home screen (or from the widget placement flow) rather than digging through multiple menus.
Rollouts vary by region and device, so you might see options sooner on Pixel devices or with a later Google app update—even if the same steps work for everyone once your app version supports them.

Before you start: prerequisites and what to check
Before troubleshooting, confirm the basics. This feature depends on the widget implementation shipped with your installed Google app version.
1) Update the Google app
On Android, open Play Store → search for Google → tap Update. After updating, force-close and reopen if needed: Settings → Apps → Google → Force stop.
You’ll typically need a recent Google app build (commonly in the 15.x range), but exact numbers differ by rollout. If you don’t see any widget options, update is the first fix.
2) Use a Home screen launcher that supports widget editing
Most stock launchers and major third-party launchers support widget resizing and editing, but some older builds only allow basic placement. If your launcher blocks widget editing, you’ll lose the “customize” option entirely.
What you can customize in the Search widget
The specific controls you’ll see depend on your phone, launcher, and Google app version. Common customization areas include:
- Widget appearance: different layout variants (single-line vs expanded), plus size-based changes.
- Launch behavior: what happens when you tap the widget (opens Search, voice search, or the Google app search entry).
- Search context: sometimes tied to your recent queries, voice availability, or default language/search setup.
- Presence of voice/microphone entry: on some variants, the widget surfaces voice search more prominently.
If you don’t see the option you want, don’t assume it’s unavailable—sometimes it’s only available for certain widget sizes (small vs medium).
Method 1: Customize the widget from the Home screen (most common)
This is the fastest path when Google app has enabled in-place widget customization.

- Go to your Home screen and locate the Google Search widget.
- Long-press the widget.
- Look for one of these actions (the wording varies): Widget settings, Configure, Edit, or a small gear icon overlay.
- Tap the configuration option, then adjust the controls you’re given (for example, selecting the widget layout variant or changing the tap action).
- Tap Save or Done (if shown), or back out to exit edit mode.
If there’s no settings option and only Remove or Resize appears, use Method 2 or Method 3. That usually means your widget variant doesn’t expose advanced controls yet.
Method 2: Customize using widget options after placing it
If you’re starting from scratch or your existing widget doesn’t expose configuration, remove and re-add the widget using the current widget picker.
- Long-press the current widget.
- Tap Remove and confirm.
- Go to an empty area of the Home screen, then long-press again.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll to Google widgets or search for Search.
- Long-press the Search widget you want, then drag it onto the Home screen.
- When prompted, select the widget variant and follow any on-screen configuration screens.
Pay attention to the widget size you place. Many “missing settings” are actually hidden behind a different size or variant.
Method 3: Use launcher-specific controls (Pixel Launcher, Samsung One UI, others)
Some launchers present widget configuration differently. The quickest way to succeed is to use the UI patterns your device already supports.

Pixel Launcher (Android 13/14)
Pixel devices often provide clearer inline controls during widget configuration.
- Long-press the widget on the Home screen.
- If you see Widget settings, open it.
- If you only see Remove, remove the widget and re-add it from Widgets so you get the latest widget variant.
Samsung One UI (Galaxy phones)
On Samsung launchers, widget behavior can differ based on One UI version and the specific widget variant.
- Long-press the Search widget.
- Check for Settings or Edit alongside Remove.
- If unavailable, go to Home screen → long-press → Widgets and add the newest Search widget variant.
Third-party launchers (Nova, etc.)
Third-party launchers sometimes restrict widget configuration panels depending on how they host widgets.

Widget size and layout: how to choose the right version
On Android, the same widget can expose different UI elements depending on size. That matters because the “extra” customization often appears only in certain variants.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Small sizes usually focus on quick access. You may see fewer options and a simpler search entry.
Medium widgets
Medium sizes are where more controls typically show up. If your goal is to change the layout or tap behavior, try a medium variant first.
Large widgets
Large variants can add space for voice or expanded search controls. If a setting exists, it’s more likely to appear here.
If you’re unsure which variant gives you the best controls, place one version, confirm whether configuration appears, then swap to another size in under a minute (remove → re-add).

If you long-press the widget and only see Remove or basic resizing, work through these fixes in order. They’re the most common reasons customization fails.
1) Confirm you’re editing the correct widget
Search widgets can have multiple similar entries. Some are “Google” widgets, others are “Search,” and some are launcher-specific search shortcuts.

- Remove the current widget.
- Re-add from Widgets in the app picker.
- Choose the widget that explicitly relates to Google Search (not a generic shortcut).
2) Update the Google app and restart the phone
Google app widget changes can require a clean restart to register. After updating, do a full reboot.
- Update Google in Play Store.
- Reboot the device.
- Re-check by long-pressing the widget.
3) Re-add the widget (don’t just resize)
If you originally added an older widget variant, it may stay “stuck” even after updates. Remove and add again so Android creates a fresh instance with the latest configuration hooks.
4) Check if the launcher is blocking widget configuration
If you’re using a third-party launcher, widget configuration options may not pass through correctly.
- Temporarily return to the default launcher (if you can).
- Test widget configuration.
- If it works on the default launcher but not your launcher, expect limitations until the launcher updates.
5) Clear Google app cache
When a widget depends on Google app components and something is corrupted, cache clearing can help.
- Settings → Apps.
- Select Google.
- Tap Storage → Clear cache.
- Reopen the Home screen and try widget configuration again.
Common mistakes that prevent Search widget customization
- Trying to configure shortcuts instead of widgets: shortcuts don’t have widget configuration panels.
- Only resizing after a Google app update: if configuration hooks changed, resizing won’t update the widget code path—remove and re-add.
- Using the wrong widget size: some options only appear on medium/large variants.
- Ignoring launcher-specific behavior: Samsung or third-party launchers can change the context menu you expect.
- Not rebooting: widget and Google app updates sometimes won’t fully apply until a restart.
Alternatives if the widget can’t be customized
If your device never shows widget configuration controls (even after updates), you still have solid options.
Use voice search via Google app
Create a shortcut to launch the Google app and use voice directly. It won’t look like the widget customization you wanted, but it can match the workflow.

Use a different Search widget variant
In the Widgets picker, try multiple Search-related entries. Even when they’re all “Search widgets,” different variants expose different controls.

Consider a launcher-level search widget
Some launchers offer their own search widgets. They may not tie into the same Google widget customization features, but they often provide quick access and consistent UI.
Security and privacy notes
The Search widget is still just a launcher surface for Google Search. It won’t magically change what your phone records, but it can change how often you tap into voice or recent suggestions.
- Review your Google activity controls in the Google app.
- If voice search appears in the widget, remember that it uses the microphone when you tap it.
- On shared phones, consider whether the widget layout exposes recent or contextual prompts you don’t want visible.
FAQs
Why don’t I see any Widget settings option when I long-press?
Most often it’s because you have an older widget variant or a Google app build that doesn’t expose configuration for your specific widget size. Update the Google app, then remove and re-add the widget from the Widgets picker.
Will customization settings persist after I reboot or change Home screens?
Usually yes. If the widget configuration depends on Google app components, you can lose it when the widget instance is replaced (like when you delete and re-add). Reboots generally don’t reset widget settings.
Does this work on every Android device?
It works on most Android devices running a recent Google app, but rollout timing and launcher differences mean you might see the feature sooner on some phones. If your device doesn’t show the options, try switching widget variants or re-adding after an update.
Can I customize the widget to open something other than Google Search?
In many cases, the widget focuses on launching Google Search or the Google app’s search entry. If your widget variant offers a configurable tap action, it’ll be shown in the widget settings. Otherwise, the behavior is fixed by the widget implementation.
Does the Search widget support dark mode?
On Android 10+ and especially with Android 12/13/14 theming, widgets typically follow system theme behavior. If the widget looks off, confirm your system theme and Google app theme settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom Line
The main advantage of the Google app Search widget updates is that customization is increasingly available right where you need it—on your Home screen. When you can’t find options, the fix is usually straightforward: update Google, re-add the widget from the Widgets picker, and try a different widget size or variant.
Once you’re on the supported widget version, customizing the Search widget becomes a quick, repeatable process instead of a hunt through menus that don’t actually change anything.
