Google is the company and the ecosystem. Gemini is the name of Google’s AI assistant and the model family behind it. Gemini is therefore not a partner that Google works with; it is one of Google’s own products, and it shows up in three distinct ways: it can answer questions using selected data from Google services, it appears inside Workspace apps such as Gmail and Docs, and it is built into supported Android phones. Each of these works differently, and none of them guarantees the same features on every account or device.
Two names for different layers
“Google” refers to the company and the services it runs, including Search, Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs and Android. “Gemini” refers to two things that are easy to blur together: the AI model family, and the assistant that people use to work with those models. When Google says Gemini is “integrated” somewhere, it means the assistant or its underlying model has been connected to that product. It does not mean a separate company has been licensed to run inside it.

Keeping those layers apart explains most of the confusion. The Gemini app is one surface. Gemini features inside Workspace are another. Gemini on an Android phone is a third. Access to each depends on different conditions.

The Gemini app can use selected Workspace data
In a July 16, 2025 announcement, Google said the Gemini app could answer questions using information in Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Keep and Tasks when used with a Google Workspace account. The examples Google gave were finding a document in Drive, summarizing unread email and retrieving notes from a meeting. The connection is to the named services only. Google does not describe it as access to everything in your Google account.

On data use, Google stated: “Your Google Workspace data is not used to train the Gemini model, and you’re always in control of your privacy settings.” That is Google’s own statement about the connection it describes. Check the privacy settings and policies that apply to your own organization or account before relying on it, because those settings differ between personal and business accounts. Google’s July 2025 Workspace announcement sets out the examples.
Gemini appears inside Workspace apps
Google’s announcements describe Gemini features in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Chat and Meet. The tasks include drafting or refining writing, summarizing messages, creating or editing spreadsheets and slides, and finding or synthesizing information across files.
In a March 10, 2026 announcement, Google described selected-source workflows that can draw on files, emails and web information. Those features launched in beta, first for Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. Google said the beta was available globally in English for Docs, Sheets and Slides, and in the U.S. for Drive, as of that date. Rollout details of this kind change, so treat them as a dated snapshot and check the current feature page. Google’s March 2026 Workspace update lists the details.

Gemini features were also added to Workspace Business and Enterprise plans, according to a January 2025 Google announcement covering Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Chat and Meet. Plan packaging is time-sensitive, so confirm what your plan includes on Google’s current Workspace plan page rather than from the 2025 post. Google’s January 2025 announcement is the original description.
For scale, Google VP of Product Yulie Kwon Kim said in its May 19, 2026 Workspace announcement that more than 4 billion users rely on Workspace apps such as Gmail, Docs and Drive. That is Google’s own figure, not an independently audited count. Google’s May 2026 Workspace update contains the statement.
Gemini is built into supported Android phones
Google describes Gemini as integrated into Android, with an assistant overlay that can answer questions about what is on your screen and work with supported apps and services. This is a system-level experience. It is separate from opening the Gemini app and separate from Workspace features.

Availability is conditional. Google says Gemini is available on many Android phone models, with features depending on device and region. Its 2024 Android announcement also notes that the Gemini mobile app is available only on select devices, languages and countries, requires an internet connection, and that some extensions may need setup or a subscription. Google’s Android announcement gives the full list of qualifications.
Pixel phones show up in Google’s examples, but they are not a requirement. Google’s Pixel 9 examples for Gemini Nano features were Call Notes and Pixel Screenshots, and that source dates to August 2024. If you are choosing a phone for a specific feature, check current model support first.
Where the processing happens
Gemini is not one uniform feature that runs in the same place every time. Google says Gemini Nano is an on-device model used for some use cases, including the Pixel 9 features listed above. Google states that on-device processing applies to some sensitive use cases, not to every Gemini task. Requests that go to the Gemini app, Workspace features or the broader assistant are handled through Google’s servers unless Google states otherwise for a specific feature.
Do not assume that a feature on your phone is on-device just because it is built into Android. Check the feature’s own description or privacy notice.

In a March 14, 2025 announcement, Google said more mobile users would be upgraded from Google Assistant to Gemini, and that classic Assistant would later become unavailable on most mobile devices. Users whose devices do not meet Gemini’s minimum requirements would keep Assistant functionality. The announcement also described plans for tablets, cars, connected devices and home devices.

Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app, wrote in that announcement: “To continue our work of building the world’s most helpful assistant, we’ve reimagined the experience with AI at its core to make Gemini your personal, AI-powered assistant.” The plan is dated. Whether the transition has finished on a particular device in October 2026 is not established by that announcement, so check your own phone’s assistant settings. Google’s March 2025 announcement is the source for the migration plan.

Gemini on watches, cars, TVs and XR devices
In May 2025, Google described bringing Gemini to watches, cars, TVs and XR devices, with rollout plans that vary by device category. The announcement shows the direction of integration across Google’s platforms and partner devices. It does not establish which models have Gemini today. Google’s device expansion announcement covers the category plans.
Which Gemini you have depends on four conditions
When someone says “I have Gemini,” they may mean one of several different things. The table separates the four places Google describes and the conditions attached to each.
| Where Gemini appears | What it can do, per Google’s announcements | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini app with a Workspace account | Answers questions using Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Keep and Tasks (July 16, 2025 announcement) | A Workspace account; the named services connected. Google says Workspace data is not used to train the Gemini model. |
| Gemini inside Workspace apps | Drafting, summarizing, spreadsheet and slide work, and selected-source workflows across files, emails and web information (March 10, 2026 announcement) | Plan-dependent. Some features were beta for Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. Availability by app and region was stated as of March 2026. |
| Gemini on Android | Assistant overlay that answers questions about the current screen and works with supported apps and services | A supported device, language and country. Internet connection required. Some extensions may need setup or a subscription (2024 Android announcement). |
| Google Assistant on mobile | Being replaced by Gemini on most mobile devices (March 14, 2025 announcement) | Devices that meet Gemini’s minimum requirements get the upgrade. Devices that do not keep Assistant. Current status not established for every device. |
A checklist before you rely on a Gemini feature
- Account type. Personal Google accounts and Workspace accounts have different Gemini connections. Confirm which one you are signed into.
- Plan. Check whether your Workspace plan or Google AI subscription includes the feature you need, using Google’s current plan page.
- Device and region. On Android, confirm the phone model, language and country are supported for the feature.
- Named data sources. Confirm that the service you want Gemini to use is one Google lists for that feature.
- Privacy settings. Review the settings for your own account or organization, since Google’s statement describes its own connection and policies.
- Assistant status. If you rely on Google Assistant, check whether your device has been moved to Gemini.
These checks matter most when a feature disappears or behaves differently from a guide written for another account or device. The product is the same family, but its settings and coverage vary.
