Google and Constellation Energy have announced a 20-year power purchase agreement tied to upgrades at 11 operating nuclear units across six plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The companies expect the work to add 890 megawatts (MW) of firm capacity to the PJM grid before the end of 2032. The upgrades are nuclear uprates—not construction of 11 new reactors.
What does a nuclear reactor “tune-up” mean?
It means a nuclear uprate: equipment upgrades at an existing reactor intended to increase its power output. Google identifies turbines, steam generators and digital control systems as areas for the work. The reactors are already operating; the project aims to raise their output rather than build new units. Google’s announcement describes the work as modernizing those systems to boost output.

What the Google–Constellation agreement covers
The companies’ October 6, 2026 announcement links a 20-year power purchase agreement to upgrades at 11 units across six plant sites in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Google is the long-term buyer, which the companies describe as providing revenue certainty for investment in the upgrades. They expect the project to add 890 MW of firm capacity to the PJM grid before the end of 2032. That is the announced aggregate target; the announcement does not give a reactor-by-reactor capacity split or a unit-level construction schedule. Constellation’s announcement also characterizes the added output as a contribution to regional grid supply.
How the physical upgrades differ from the software work
The agreement has a separate technology component: Google Cloud and Constellation expanded their technology alliance for five years. Constellation plans to deploy Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise agentic workflows across operations. Google says the intended uses include accelerating uprate planning, streamlining construction and optimizing plant output. These are stated goals for the software deployment, not reported results; the announcement does not establish that Gemini Enterprise controls reactor safety systems.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate WWII Replica : A 1/12 scale model of the U.S. Little Boy atomic bomb, metal model kits for adults, crafted from aluminum alloy for durability
- Heavy Weight : Thickened aluminum alloy sheet, Solid main body with a dedicated display stand
- Complete Assembly Tools : Includes an assembly guide, screwdriver, sanding rod, and decals for a rewarding build experience, with minimal glue(not include) needed
- Easy to Assemble : With a detailed manual, you can follow the steps to sand and assemble, quickly achieving your very own masterpiece
- Perfect for Collectors : Innovative full-metal nuclear bomb model, a must-have for history enthusiasts and collectors interested in WWII memorabilia
The distinction matters: turbines, steam generators and control-system upgrades are physical work at the plants, while Gemini Enterprise is an enterprise software deployment intended to support operational workflows.
How this fits with Google’s other nuclear activity
Google says the Constellation agreement brings its enabled nuclear capacity from uprates and restarts to more than 1.5 gigawatts (GW) across its broader activity. That is Google’s portfolio-wide figure, not the capacity of this single agreement. Google’s separate 2024 agreement with Kairos Power concerns planned advanced small modular reactors, with a target of up to 500 MW across multiple deployments. The Constellation project instead seeks additional output from existing operating plants.

Costs and projected employment
Google’s announcement does not state the upgrade investment amount. Axios reported that Constellation would invest $4.3 billion in upgrades; that figure is Axios’s reporting, not an amount specified in the companies’ announcement. Axios’s report also provides that investment figure.
Google estimates the project will sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs and support approximately 7,200 construction jobs. These are company estimates, not independently verified employment outcomes. The available announcements do not allocate costs or jobs by reactor or plant.
