Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a small business, a useful Google Analytics 4 (GA4) setup needs three things: a property for the business website, a web data stream, and a correctly installed Google tag. Then verify that data arrives and track an event that reflects the business goal—such as a lead submission or an online purchase. Page views alone do not show whether the site is generating business.
What to set up in GA4
GA4 organizes website measurement around an Analytics account, a property, and a data stream. A property contains the reporting data; a web data stream collects activity from the site. The setup process and account structure are described in Google’s GA4 setup guide and account structure documentation.

- Create or select an Analytics account, then create a GA4 property for the business website.
- Choose the property’s reporting time zone and currency carefully. Time zone changes affect future data and can create a discontinuity in reporting. Currency determines how monetary values are presented.
- Add a web data stream for the primary site. Google recommends enabling enhanced measurement when creating the stream; review which events it measures and disable individual enhanced-measurement events if they are not suitable for the site or its data practices.
- Install the Google tag using a supported CMS integration, the site’s code, or a tag manager.
- Visit the site and check the Realtime report. Google says collection can take up to 30 minutes to begin.
Choose an installation method
| Method | When it fits | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| CMS integration | The website platform provides a GA4 integration or measurement ID field. | Follow the platform’s instructions and verify collection in GA4. |
| Manual tag installation | You or a developer can edit the site code and no suitable integration is available. | Install the full tag as directed by Google. Do not add more than one Google tag to a page. |
| Tag manager | The business uses a tag-management system to deploy and maintain tags. | Configure and validate the tag there, then confirm that GA4 receives activity. |
Google’s setup guide covers the installation routes. A page loading successfully is not proof that the tag is installed only once or that business-specific events are configured.

Realtime is the first check after installation: visit the site and look for activity. For event-level troubleshooting, enable debug mode and inspect DebugView. Google’s event documentation explains how to send and debug events.

Next, identify one meaningful action and confirm its event is actually being collected. A key event is an event that represents an action important to the business. Marking an event as a key event does not create or repair the event; verify its implementation first. Google explains what key events are and how to mark an event as a key event.
For lead-generation sites
Choose an event tied to a real lead action, such as a completed contact or quote-request form, if that event is implemented and collected. Do not treat every page view or button click as a qualified lead by default. Confirm the event fires for the intended action, then mark it as a key event.
For online stores
Use ecommerce events that describe the shopping journey, such as add_to_cart and purchase. These events are not generally collected automatically on every website. Ecommerce reporting depends on sending the required event parameters; an event with missing parameters may be treated as a custom event and may not appear as expected in ecommerce reports. A commerce platform can provide some collection after setup, but that depends on the specific integration. See Google’s guidance on ecommerce events and the Ecommerce purchases report.
Which metrics should a small business track?
Choose metrics to answer a business question, not simply because they appear in Analytics. A compact starting dashboard can contain one reach measure, one engagement measure, and one business outcome measure, reviewed over a consistent time window. That is a practical starting point, not a Google benchmark; the right choices depend on the business model and marketing channels.
Rank #3
| Business question | Useful starting measures | How to read them |
|---|---|---|
| Are people finding the site? | Sessions or users; acquisition source, medium, or campaign; landing page | Users and sessions measure different things. Use consistently tagged campaign links when you need to distinguish campaign traffic. |
| Are visits engaging with the site? | Engaged sessions, engagement rate, and landing-page behavior | These describe session engagement by GA4’s criteria; they do not establish revenue or lead quality. |
| Are visitors taking an important action? | A verified key event, such as a lead submission or purchase | Check that the event is collected and represents the intended action before using it as an outcome measure. |
| Which products sell, and where does shopping stall? | Ecommerce purchases report, item views, add-to-cart events, and purchase events | Use these reports only after implementing the relevant ecommerce events and required parameters. |
Users are not all the same measure
GA4 distinguishes several user measures. Total users are unique users who triggered any event in the selected date range. Active users are unique users who meet GA4’s activity criteria. New users are users who logged a first-visit or first-open event in that range. Returning users are users with at least one earlier session. These definitions are documented in Google’s user metrics reference. Avoid swapping these labels as if they all meant “visitors.”
Engagement rate and bounce rate
GA4 counts a session as engaged if it lasts longer than 10 seconds, includes a key event, or has at least two page or screen views. Engagement rate is the share of sessions that are engaged; bounce rate is the share that are not. These are complementary measures of session engagement, not direct measures of commercial success. Google documents the definitions in its engagement and bounce rate guidance.

Use acquisition reports to assess campaigns
Campaign reporting is more useful when campaign links are tagged consistently with UTM parameters. Without consistent tagging, comparisons between campaigns can be misleading or incomplete. Google’s manual campaign report guidance covers campaign reporting. Compare acquisition with a relevant outcome—such as a verified lead key event or ecommerce revenue—rather than judging a campaign by traffic volume alone.

Common setup and interpretation mistakes
- Installing the tag more than once: duplicate Google tags can lead to duplicate collection. Google’s manual setup guidance says not to add more than one Google tag to each page.
- Assuming a page view proves lead or sales tracking: test the actual business event and, for ecommerce, its required parameters.
- Expecting ecommerce events to appear automatically on every site: general Google guidance requires implementation, though platform integrations vary.
- Treating engagement rate as a business outcome: pair it with the key event or revenue measure relevant to the business.
- Comparing campaigns without consistent UTMs: campaign attribution depends on properly tagged links.
- Changing the reporting time zone casually: a change applies going forward and can create a temporary flat spot or spike around the transition.
Google’s help documentation explains product setup and definitions, but it does not establish a universal small-business performance benchmark. Do not judge a business against an industry average unless that figure comes from a relevant, clearly described study.
