In late May 2025, Google Search’s AI Overview sometimes answered the simple question “Is it 2025?” with a confident “No, it is not 2025. The current year is 2024.” WIRED reproduced the error, while Android Authority and TechCrunch reported the same incident and a subsequent correction.
What Google’s AI Overview actually said
The failure appeared on ordinary Google Search pages when users asked a basic, time-sensitive date question. Instead of recognizing that the year was 2025, the generated summary asserted that it was still 2024. Repeated prompts did not always produce the same answer: testing documented contradictory responses, which is important because a single correct retest cannot establish consistent reliability.
Google spokesperson Meghann Farnsworth told WIRED: “The vast majority of AI Overviews provide helpful, factual information and we’re actively working on an update to address this type of issue.” Google’s interface also warns that AI-generated results may not be accurate.
Was this a real bug or a viral fake?
The 2024 answer was a real, reported AI Overview failure, not merely a meme. WIRED reproduced it, and Android Authority and TechCrunch described the same behavior. The Associated Press separately warned that some widely circulated screenshots of AI Overview errors had been fabricated, so those images should not be treated as evidence unless independently verified.

Did Google fix the “still 2024” answer?
Android Authority reported on May 30, 2025 that Google had corrected the result so the query returned 2025. TechCrunch also reported the correction. That establishes a software-side fix for the specific date response at that time; it does not prove that every AI Overview is accurate or that the underlying failure mechanism is known.
The public reporting does not establish a verified internal cause. It records the symptom, Google’s statement that an update was being developed, and the later correction. Claims that this was definitively a particular model, retrieval, or system-clock bug go beyond the available evidence.

Why the incident embarrassed Google
A wrong answer about the current year is unusually damaging for a search product because it concerns a fact that changes with the calendar and should be resolved directly. AI Overviews can appear above conventional web results, so a user may see the generated answer before opening a source or checking another service.
The episode also revived problems from the feature’s troubled 2024 rollout. In a May 30, 2024 Search post, Google acknowledged that “some odd, inaccurate or unhelpful AI Overviews certainly did show up.” The Associated Press reported that Google then made more than a dozen technical improvements after viral examples of incorrect summaries, including one that drew on a satirical Reddit comment to suggest putting glue on pizza. Those earlier examples provide context, but they do not prove that the 2025 date error had the same cause.
How much reach was involved?
TechCrunch reported Google’s claim that AI Overviews had reached 1.5 billion users in more than 100 countries. That is a company-reported reach figure for 2025, not an accuracy measurement, user-satisfaction score, or count of people who saw the erroneous year answer. Large reach increases the consequences of a visible mistake but cannot be used to calculate its frequency.
Can you trust Google AI Overviews?
Treat an AI Overview as a convenience layer, not as an authority. For simple questions that affect a decision, verify the answer against the page’s cited sources, an official website, or a conventional search result. Be especially cautious when the answer is time-sensitive, unusually specific, or presented without a clear supporting source.

| What to check | Why it matters | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy on a simple current fact | The year incident shows that basic questions can still receive confident errors. | Check an official clock, calendar, government page, or another independent source. |
| Consistency | Repeated prompts produced contradictory answers during the incident. | Repeat the query and compare the underlying sources; disagreement is a warning sign. |
| Citations and disclaimer | The generated summary may appear before ordinary results and carries an accuracy warning. | Open the cited pages instead of relying on the summary alone. |
| Correction speed | Google reported work on an update, and contemporary coverage reported a fix on May 30, 2025. | Look for dated confirmation when a known error is reported; do not assume every related error is fixed. |
| Reach | Google’s 1.5-billion-user figure describes distribution, not quality. | Do not treat popularity or availability as evidence of correctness. |
What to do if an AI Overview gives you the wrong year
- Check the device’s date and time, an official time service, or a trusted calendar.
- Run the same question in a conventional results view and open a primary source.
- Try the query again only as a diagnostic; a different answer demonstrates inconsistency, not reliability.
- Use Google’s feedback controls to report the inaccurate Overview, and record the date and wording if the error matters.
- For legal, financial, medical, travel, or deadline-sensitive decisions, rely on the responsible authority’s current information rather than the generated summary.
The bottom line on the 2024 answer
Google AI Overviews really did tell some users that the year was 2024 when it was 2025. Reports said the specific result was corrected on May 30, 2025, but the contradictory outputs and the absence of a confirmed internal cause mean the episode should be read as a reliability warning—not proof that all AI Overviews are broken, and not proof that they can be trusted without verification.
