That episode documents a moderation gap at the time—not proof that the named bots are still available or that OpenAI’s current policies contain the same wording.
What Futurism found in January 2024
In a Jan. 22, 2024 report, Futurism said its searches of the GPT Store surfaced listings including “Nadia, my girlfriend” and “Your girlfriend Tiffany.” The report characterized these and other listings as romantic or sexually suggestive chatbot experiences.
Those examples are dated observations by a reporter. The available evidence does not establish that either listing remains accessible, how many similar GPTs existed, or what percentage of them violated OpenAI’s rules.
What the policy reportedly prohibited then
Futurism quoted the policy language in force at the time as barring tools “dedicated to fostering romantic companionship” and tools with “sexually explicit or suggestive content.” That wording belongs to the policy context reported in January 2024; it should not be presented as the text of OpenAI’s current policy.

The spokesperson continued: “We remove GPTs that violate our policies as we see them. We’re continually working to make our enforcement more robust. Users are also able to report GPTs.”
This describes OpenAI’s stated process. It is not an independently measured success rate, audit, or count of violating GPTs. Futurism also described its own spot checks separately from the company’s statement, so the two kinds of evidence should not be conflated.

How the 2024 account differs from the current policy page
OpenAI’s displayed Usage Policies page is marked effective Oct. 29, 2025. It addresses sexual violence and non-consensual intimate content, child safety, privacy, and manipulation, among other restrictions. The displayed text does not include the earlier, explicit clause about tools dedicated to fostering romantic companionship.

Why “struggling to destroy” is a misleading conclusion
The headline’s language is rhetorical. The documented facts show that some listings appeared to conflict with the policy language Futurism quoted, and that OpenAI acknowledged an ongoing enforcement effort. They do not prove company intent, a measured platform-wide failure, or an inability to remove every prohibited bot.

GPT Store moderation is also a moving target. A listing can be removed, renamed, made private, or replaced, while policy text can change. Without a current, reproducible inventory and an independently verified enforcement rate, present-day availability cannot be inferred from a January 2024 report.

In a 2026 trends article, the American Psychological Association reported a 700% increase in AI companion apps between 2022 and mid-2025, attributing that figure to TechCrunch. It is therefore a secondary attribution, not an APA primary measurement.

Standalone companion apps and GPT Store bots are different products and should not be treated as the same market or governed by identical controls. The 700% figure does not measure OpenAI listings, policy violations, or moderation performance.
What users should check before trusting a “girlfriend GPT”
- Creation and availability: A January 2024 name or screenshot does not confirm that the GPT is still published.
- Data practices: Avoid sharing identifying, financial, health, or intimate information unless you understand the service’s retention and access rules.
- Age and sexual content: Treat sexualized interactions and any suggestion involving minors or non-consensual intimate material as a serious safety warning.
