Google AI Overviews FAQ: Sources, Accuracy, and How to Opt Out

Google AI Overviews cannot be disabled with a general Search setting. Use the Web filter for text links, verify linked claims, and distinguish user settings from publisher controls.

Google does not offer a general setting to turn off AI Overviews. To see text-based links without them, run a search and select the Web filter. Google’s separate “AI in Search” Labs switch applies to experiments, not the core Overviews feature.

Can you turn off Google AI Overviews?

No—not as a general, permanent Search setting. Google describes AI Overviews as a core Search feature that cannot be turned off. The practical alternative is to choose the Web filter after searching; Google says it displays text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. This changes the current results view, rather than setting a lasting account-wide preference. Google Search Help explains the Web filter and AI Overviews.

Show text links with the Web filter

  1. Run a search on Google.
  2. Choose Web from the search filters.

The resulting view is designed for text-based links. It is not the same as disabling AI Overviews everywhere you use Search.

What the Labs switch does

Google’s “AI in Search” setting is for Labs experiments. To change it, be signed in to your Google Account, turn off Incognito mode, open Labs and then Manage, and switch off AI in Search. That opts you out of the Labs experiments covered by the setting; it does not switch off core AI Overviews. See Google’s instructions for managing Search Labs experiments.

Where do AI Overviews get their sources?

Google says AI Overviews combine a customized Gemini model with Search systems, including ranking systems and the Knowledge Graph. The system is intended to find relevant, high-quality results from Google’s index to corroborate information in an overview, then provide links to web content for follow-up. Google says the feature is intended for searches where generative AI may help, such as complex questions or exploring a subject from several sources. Its explanation is a description of the intended system, not a complete, reproducible rule for which pages will appear for a particular query. Google’s explanation of AI Overviews.

A link beside an overview is a place to check a claim, not proof that every linked page supports every sentence. Open the cited page, find the relevant passage, and compare its wording and context with the summary. Google announced on May 6, 2026, that it was adding ways to explore websites and original content, including further-exploration suggestions, subscription links, and more direct links in AI responses. Those features were announced as product updates; their presence can vary by user or query. Google’s May 6, 2026 announcement.

Can I tell Google which sources I prefer?

Google’s Preferred Sources feature lets users signal publications they want to see. Where supported, selected sources may receive a “preferred” badge in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Eligibility rules apply, and choosing a preferred source does not turn off summaries or exclude all other sources. Google Search Central’s Preferred Sources guidance.

Are Google AI Overviews accurate?

They can be useful, but they are not dependable enough to accept without checking. Google states plainly: “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes.” It advises checking important information in more than one place, opening supporting links, trying other Search results, and asking multiple versions of a question. Google also warns that generative AI may produce inaccurate or offensive information. Google’s help guidance on AI Overviews.

One 2026 preprint, Measuring Google AI Overviews: Activation, Source Quality, Claim Fidelity, and Publisher Impact, examined 55,393 trending queries across 19 topical categories over 40 days, from March 13 to April 21, 2026. Its authors report that 11.0% of 98,020 analyzed atomic claims were unsupported by the cited pages. That is a finding for the paper’s sample, method, and study period—not a universal error rate for every overview or query. The paper also identifies omission as the dominant failure mode. The 2026 preprint.

Google does not provide a measured overall accuracy percentage in the cited help guidance. The study’s sample-specific measurement and Google’s qualitative warning answer different questions, so neither establishes one definitive accuracy score for all AI Overviews.

A practical way to verify an important answer

  • Open the links shown with the overview and check whether the cited text actually supports the specific claim.
  • Compare consequential facts with another credible source, rather than relying on a single summary or citation.
  • For medical, legal, financial, or other high-stakes decisions, consult an appropriate expert.
  • If the overview seems incomplete, try a more specific or differently phrased search and inspect the regular results.

Send feedback about a specific overview

Use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down controls at the bottom of an overview. If reporting a problem, choose the report option and submit details. Google says submitted feedback includes the most recent search query and its results, so consider that context before sending it. Instructions are on Google Search Help.

Can website owners opt out of AI Overviews?

That is a separate question from an individual searcher hiding summaries. In a May 2026 announcement, Google described a Search Console control under test that lets site owners manage whether their site appears in and helps ground Google’s generative AI Search features, including AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover. Google said that opting out would mean losing traffic and impressions from those features, but would not affect a site’s ranking in Search outside them. Google’s announcement of the publisher control.

Because Google described the control as being tested, not every site should be assumed to have it. Site owners should check their own Search Console for current availability, scope, and wording before making a decision.
