Google AI Mode is still testing showing ads in search results

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google AI Mode is rolling out while still in testing, and some people are reporting that they see ads interleaved in the search results experience. If you’re noticing this and wondering whether it’s a bug, a policy change, or just normal experimentation, the quickest path is to confirm you’re seeing AI Mode and then check the relevant settings.

This guide breaks down what to expect, how ads can appear during AI experiments, and what you can do on your Google account and browsers to limit personalization. You’ll also find troubleshooting steps for the cases where the results page looks “off.”

What Google AI Mode is (and why testing matters)

Google AI Mode is an experimental search experience designed to blend AI-assisted responses into the way you interact with search results. Depending on your region and account eligibility, you may see additional AI-driven UI elements, response blocks, or conversational prompts alongside standard links.

Because it’s still testing, Google commonly runs A/B-style rollouts and UI variants. That means two users searching the same query on the same day may see different layouts—especially in the “top of page” area where both AI content and ads can compete for attention.

Why you might see ads in Google search results during AI Mode tests

Even when an AI response is present, Google search still monetizes through ads. During testing, ads can appear in places that feel unusual because the page layout changes to accommodate AI elements.

Common reasons ads appear during AI Mode experiments

  • Layout changes during rollout: AI blocks may shift where ads appear visually, even if the ad sources and ranking logic are unchanged.
  • “Top of page” ad slots: Many searches reserve premium ad positions near the first content area. AI responses can end up adjacent to those slots.
  • Query intent triggers ads: Ads are more likely for commercial or high-intent queries (shopping, services, software, travel). AI Mode doesn’t change that underlying behavior.
  • Personalization effects: If you’re signed in with ad personalization enabled, your ad mix can look more “relevant” and therefore more noticeable.

Ads are not the same as “sponsored AI answers”

In most cases, what you’re seeing are standard sponsored ad placements in the search results layout. The AI content is the experimental layer; the advertising system is still operating in parallel.

If something appears like an AI response is sponsored, focus on the labeling. Google typically distinguishes advertising from organic results with ad labels and placement rules.

How to confirm you’re actually seeing AI Mode

Before assuming the ad behavior is tied to AI Mode, confirm the UI state on your side. The exact labels vary by platform and rollout stage.

Quick checks on desktop browsers

  1. Go to Google Search.
  2. Run a query you’ve searched before.
  3. Look for an AI response/AI-generated block near the top of results (often containing a conversational answer style).
  4. Check for any AI Mode toggle, banner, or indicator near the search box or results header.

Quick checks on mobile (Android/iPhone)

  1. Open the Google app or your browser and load google.com.
  2. Search for a query that typically produces both organic results and ads.
  3. Confirm there’s an AI-style response module instead of only a standard list of links.
  4. Look for the AI Mode setting/toggle if shown in your app experience.

If you can’t find any AI indicator and you only see typical sponsored listings and organic results, you may be seeing normal search results rather than an AI Mode variant.

What’s normal vs. what looks wrong

During testing, “normal” usually means ads remain clearly labeled and appear in consistent ad slots, even if the surrounding AI UI changes.

Likely normal

  • Ads appear at the top, side, or within the first screen area.
  • Each sponsored entry is labeled as an ad (for example, a “Sponsored” label).
  • Organic results remain clickable and distinct from the AI response.

Potentially abnormal (worth investigating)

  • Sponsored content is not labeled as ads.
  • Ads are displayed inside what looks like the AI response text without clear separation.
  • You see repeated ad modules unusually often for the same query compared to your baseline.

If any of the abnormal signs appear, it’s usually tied to a UI bug, cached state, or an experimental layout variant—rather than a permanent policy change.

How to reduce ad relevance tracking (and why it won’t remove ads entirely)

You can often reduce how personalized your ads feel, but you generally can’t remove ads completely from standard Google search results. The goal is to reduce tracking signals and ad targeting so the ads are less “tailored” to you.

Step 1: Control Ads Personalization in your Google account

  1. Go to the Google Account settings.
  2. Open Ads (sometimes under Privacy or Ad settings depending on your UI).
  3. Find Ad personalization and turn it off.

Step 2: Manage your Google activity permissions

  1. Visit My Activity and Web & App Activity.
  2. Toggle off storing activity if you want fewer future targeting signals.
  3. Review existing activity if you want to remove past signals that may influence current targeting.

Step 3: Use browser privacy controls (site-level)

Browser settings won’t fully stop ad delivery, but they can reduce tracking and retargeting. Try clearing site data for google.com and third-party cookies if you want a “fresh” baseline.

On Safari, Chrome, or Firefox, the controls are similar: block third-party cookies, clear cached site data, and restart the browser before retesting.

Goal What to change What to expect
Less personalized ads Turn off Ads Personalization Ads still appear, but fewer targeting matches
Fewer tracking signals Control Web & App Activity / cookies Ad relevance may change after re-testing
Fresh UI behavior Clear cookies/cache, restart browser May change which experiment you see

Fixes and troubleshooting when ads show up unexpectedly

If you feel the ad placement is wrong specifically for AI Mode, work through this in order. Most issues come down to caching, a stale experiment assignment, or sign-in state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1) Sign out and sign back in (or test both states)

Try the same search while signed out, then while signed in. If the behavior changes noticeably, your account state or personalization settings may be part of the story.

2) Clear cache/cookies for Google properties

  1. Open your browser settings.
  2. Clear cookies and cached data for google.com (and accounts.google.com if applicable).
  3. Close all tabs and restart the browser.
  4. Re-run the query and compare the results layout.

3) Try an incognito/private window

A private window reduces the influence of existing cookies and extensions. If ads don’t “look wrong” in incognito, then extensions or cached state were likely contributing.

4) Disable extensions that affect page rendering

  • Ad blockers
  • Privacy blockers
  • Script blockers
  • Custom style/user-agent extensions

Some blockers can change how the page layout loads, which may make ad slots appear in unexpected positions relative to AI UI modules.

5) Test on a different device or network

Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or test on a different device. Rollouts can be device-specific, and network-level caching can occasionally affect what you see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6) Check your language and location settings

AI Mode and ad selection can vary by region and language. If you’re traveling or changed your Google language settings, the results page may shift.

Device and browser considerations

AI Mode rollouts often behave differently across browser engines and mobile apps because the UI components are rendered separately.

Desktop

If you’re on Windows, macOS, or Linux, test at least two browsers (for example, Chrome and Firefox). Differences in cookie handling and caching can change which experimental layout you see.

Alternatives if you want fewer ad experiences

You can’t eliminate ads from standard Google Search, but you can change how you consume results. The goal is to reduce the friction created by ad density and AI modules.

Use more specific queries

Commercial keywords tend to trigger more ads. If you want fewer sponsored results, add constraints (model numbers, version names, “documentation,” “API,” or “pricing vs cost breakdown”).

Rely on sources that summarize without interleaving ads

For technical topics, consider using official documentation and reputable aggregators where ads aren’t interwoven into the main answer format as heavily. That approach can give you cleaner reading even if Google itself still shows ads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch search providers for research workflows

If the ad/AI layout distracts you, you can run the same query on another engine and compare the top organic sources. Many workflows use Google for discovery and then verify with documentation or direct sources.

FAQs

Is Google AI Mode showing ads a sign of a policy change?

No. Ads are a standard part of Google Search. What changes during AI Mode testing is usually the page layout and how AI UI modules share space with existing ad slots.

Can I completely remove ads from Google search while using AI Mode?

Not through normal Google settings. You can reduce personalization and tracking signals, but sponsored placements typically remain.

Why do the results look different on my friend’s phone?

Rollouts are staged and experiments can be assigned by account, region, device, and time. Even the same account can show slightly different layouts depending on app/browser state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My ads aren’t labeled. Is that a bug?

It could be a rendering or UI bug, especially if you use privacy extensions or aggressive ad blocking. Try a private window and temporarily disable extensions. If the issue persists, report it via the feedback option on the results page.

Will turning off Ads Personalization stop ad placement?

No. It changes targeting and relevance. Ad placement will usually remain, but the ads may feel less tailored.

Bottom Line

Google AI Mode can show ads during testing because AI is layered on top of a search product that already uses sponsored placements. If the experience looks unusual, it’s often a rollout variant, caching state, or extension-related rendering issue rather than a sudden change to how ads work.

Confirm you’re seeing AI Mode, test signed-in vs signed-out, clear cookies, and adjust Ads Personalization if you want less targeted advertising. If labels are missing or the layout seems broken, retest in a private window and disable extensions, then report the problem from the results page.
