I spent $46 on my first Google Ads app campaign and recorded 133 installs. Most players appeared to quit by wave 3. Those numbers describe the campaign as I reported it; without the underlying ad exports and gameplay analytics, they do not establish how many people opened the game, how many reached wave 3, or why they stopped.
The headline arithmetic is about $0.35 per reported install ($46 divided by 133), not a verified cost per first-time player or a general benchmark. The useful lesson is to trace the whole path from ad conversion to first open, gameplay progress, and return visits before deciding whether a campaign—or a game—is working.

What the $46 and 133 installs do—and do not—tell me
The $46 spend and 133 installs are creator-reported figures. No campaign export, date range, geography, game identity, or event instrumentation is available here to verify them. The approximate $0.35 figure is simply the reported spend divided by the reported install count; it is not independently observed or comparable to another game’s cost.
“Install” needs a source and a definition. A Google Ads app conversion, a first-time installer in Google Play Console, and a first open are different measurements. Before treating 133 as the campaign’s result, identify the reporting surface, date range, conversion action, and attribution settings behind that number.

| Measure | What it can represent | What is established for this campaign |
|---|---|---|
| Spend | Campaign cost over a stated period | $46, creator-reported; reporting period not stated |
| Google Ads install conversions | App-download conversions attributed under Google Ads measurement rules | Not established whether the 133 count came from Google Ads |
| Play Console first-time installers | Unique users installing for the first time, as defined in Play Console | Not established whether the 133 count came from Play Console |
| First opens | People who actually launch the game after installation | Not stated |
| Players starting or reaching each wave | Progression events, if the game records them | Not stated |
| Day-based retained installers | People who still have the app installed for the indicated period | Not stated; this does not by itself show that they opened the game |
Google notes that acquisition measures can differ across Google Ads, Google Analytics, and Play Console. In its documented example, Play Console counts unique users installing for the first time, while Google Ads conversions may include reinstalls and installs on multiple devices. A mismatch between dashboards is not, by itself, proof of invalid traffic. See Google Play Console’s acquisition and retention definitions.
Why an install is not the same as a player
An ad conversion can indicate that an app download met the configured conversion definition; it does not establish that the person launched the game or played long enough to encounter a wave. Google Ads supports app install and in-app activity conversion tracking, and reporting can include privacy-safe modeled data. The platform also applies an engagement-to-install conversion window, so the window and current setup matter when interpreting totals. Consult Google Ads app conversion tracking guidance for the current configuration and window rather than assuming every dashboard is counting the same event.

Play Console’s retained-installer metric answers a different question: whether someone kept the app installed on at least one device for the indicated period. It does not mean the game was opened during that period. Neither install conversions nor retained installers reveal which wave a person reached unless separate gameplay events were recorded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat “most players quit by wave 3” needs to mean
That observation is useful only with a defined cohort, denominator, and observation window. “Most” might refer to people who installed, people who opened the game, people who started wave 1, or people who reached wave 2. Those groups can produce very different drop-off rates. “Quit by wave 3” could mean a player failed to begin that wave, left before completing it, or simply did not return within a chosen period.

The reported title does not specify which definition applies or whether wave progression was instrumented. If the game did not record start, completion, and return events, install retention cannot establish that players reached or abandoned wave 3. Treat the wave-3 statement as an observed impression, not a measured funnel, until the event data supports it.
Build a funnel that connects campaign spend to play
For a future campaign—or a retrospective using existing logs—line up acquisition and gameplay events over clearly stated periods. Use the same cohort logic when comparing countries, creatives, or channels, if more than one was actually tested.

- Record the campaign context. Capture dates, target countries, platform, campaign objective, bidding strategy, creative approach, conversion source, and any in-app actions used for optimization. These details are not established for the reported campaign.
- Name the install metric. Say whether the number comes from Google Ads install conversions, Play Console first-time installers, or another defined event. Include the reporting period and relevant measurement window.
- Measure the first open. Separate downloads or installs from people who launch the game. An install count alone cannot supply a first-open rate.
- Instrument meaningful progress. Where feasible, record events such as tutorial started or completed, wave started, wave completed, and session ended. Define each event so its count has a consistent meaning.
- Compare cohorts over time. Track return activity and retention by a stated day or period. Keep retained-installer figures distinct from app opens and gameplay events.
- Connect outcomes to the objective. Compare acquisition cost with progression, retention, and monetization—or another explicit goal—rather than judging on installs alone.
If those events were not recorded during this campaign, do not infer them retrospectively from Play Console’s retained-installer data. Start collecting them for the next cohort instead.
Was spending $46 worthwhile?
The spend and install count alone cannot answer that. About $0.35 per reported install is an arithmetic ratio, not evidence that the campaign delivered engaged players or value. A useful judgment depends on the goal and on what happened after installation: first opens, early progression, cohort returns, and revenue or another intended outcome.
No universal performance benchmark for this campaign is established by the available information. Google Play’s case-study index contains outcomes reported by developers in particular contexts; those results are not a like-for-like target unless game type, country, objective, measurement, and cohort definitions align.
Quick Recap
What to change before the next campaign
- Keep the acquisition count, but label its source and conversion definition directly beside it.
- Check that first-open and early-game events are being recorded and can be compared with the acquisition cohort.
- Define the wave-3 drop-off with a denominator and time window before attributing it to the game, the audience, or the ads.
- If multiple countries, creatives, or cohorts were tested, compare them on the same measures: cost per defined conversion, first-open rate, early progression, cohort retention, and the intended outcome.
- Use store-listing engagement and game retention as separate questions. Google for Games discusses store-listing discovery and rewarded ads as possible product approaches, but that guidance does not establish that rewarded ads would fix this game’s reported drop-off: Google for Games.
