Standard promotion assets are Google-documented discount extensions for Search, YouTube and some Maps placements. “Direct offer” is different in the available evidence: an October 7, 2026 report describes it as a beta asset for AI Mode that can present AI-selected incentives and single-use codes, but Google’s reviewed Help and API documentation does not confirm the feature. Treat promotion assets as the established option; verify Direct offer availability and specifications in your account before planning around it.
How the two assets differ
| What to compare | Standard promotion asset | Direct offer |
|---|---|---|
| Status and evidence | Documented in Google Ads Help and the Google Ads API schema. | Described as a beta in a PPC News Feed report dated October 7, 2026; the Google sources reviewed do not confirm it. |
| Purpose and placement | Highlights a sale or special offer alongside eligible ads in Search and YouTube, and in Maps for some Performance Max Store Goals campaigns. | The report says it appears beneath a sponsored result in AI Mode as a “Claim one-time code” bar, which opens an offer card. |
| Offer setup | Set a monetary or percentage discount, offer target, destination URL, language and currency; optionally add a code or spend threshold, occasion, terms, and timing. | The report describes an internal offer name, short AI-facing description, final URL and incentive details, with optional single-use-code upload, terms, dates and daily claim limits. |
| Eligibility | Google documents the asset and its placement rules; eligibility depends on asset type and campaign context. | The report says it serves only on campaigns using AI Max or text customization. This is beta reporting, not confirmed Google policy. |
| Management and billing | Can be added at account, campaign or ad-group level; the most specific applicable level takes precedence. Google says adding the asset is free, while clicks are charged at the ad headline rate. | The report says it can be added at account or campaign level. Precedence, API support, reporting and click charges are not established by the sources reviewed. |

What standard promotion assets do
A promotion asset lets an advertiser attach a discount to an ad. The offer can be a percentage off or a fixed monetary amount, and may require a promotional code or a minimum order value. Advertisers provide the offer target and final URL, and can set language, currency, dates and a day-and-time schedule. Google’s API schema also documents optional occasion and terms fields.

Google says the asset can show up to two lines of promotion detail. Customers who click or tap are taken to the relevant offer on the advertiser’s site. QR-code and barcode promotions are limited to Maps placements. See Google’s promotion asset instructions for current setup details.

Where standard assets may appear
- Search ads.
- Below Performance Max Shorts and in-stream YouTube placements.
- Maps on mobile for promotions in Performance Max campaigns using Store Goals.
Those placements are Google’s documented possibilities, not a guarantee that every asset will appear in every eligible impression.
How levels and occasions work
Promotion assets can coexist at account, campaign and ad-group scope. Where more than one applies, the most specific level takes precedence: ad group over campaign, and campaign over account. Occasion-specific assets must be created or edited within six months of the occasion’s start date to be eligible to serve; Google says an occasion asset left unmodified for six months is automatically paused.

What the reported Direct offer beta adds
PPC News Feed’s October 7, 2026 report describes a distinct offer workflow rather than a renamed standard promotion asset. According to that report, the setup includes an internal offer name, a short description intended for AI, a final URL and incentive type and amount. Advertisers may also upload a CSV of single-use codes and provide terms, dates, and a daily limit based on claimed value or number of claims.
The report says Google AI selects among multiple submitted incentives using customer behavior and context. It describes the offer appearing below a sponsored result in AI Mode; tapping “Claim one-time code” opens a card with the code and a “Continue to site” button. It also reports that campaigns need AI Max or text customization to serve the asset. These details are attributed to the report because the Google Help and API materials reviewed document standard promotion assets, not Direct offer.
Which should you use?
Choose a standard promotion asset for a documented discount extension
Use the standard asset when you want to show a percentage or fixed-amount discount, with an optional code or spending requirement, across supported Search, YouTube or qualifying Maps contexts. Its setup fields, scope precedence, timing rules and click-charge treatment are described in Google’s Help documentation.
Consider Direct offer only if it is available in your account
The reported beta may suit an AI Mode offer concept built around a selectable incentive or one-time code, but the report does not establish broad availability or a geography. Check the Assets interface in your own Google Ads account and confirm the terms and behavior shown there before relying on it. Do not assume it follows promotion-asset precedence, uses the public API, shares promotion reporting or has the same billing rules.
Cost and timing: documented versus reported
Google says standard promotion assets are free to add. Clicks are charged at the same rate as clicks on the ad headline, and Google says advertisers are not charged for more than two clicks per ad impression. Standard assets can use dates and day/time schedules, with the separate six-month occasion freshness rule described above.

For Direct offer, the report describes start and end dates and optional daily caps by claim value or count; without a cap, it says an offer runs until its end date or until all codes are claimed. It does not report a billing rule. Google’s standard promotion-asset charge terms should not be assumed to apply to this reported beta.

Google’s Help page and v25 API schema establish the standard promotion asset’s offer fields and management model. The Direct offer feature’s interface, AI selection, AI Mode display and campaign eligibility are described by PPC News Feed as beta observations dated October 7, 2026. The sources reviewed do not establish its rollout status, geography, account eligibility, public API support, reporting behavior or billing. For the beta’s reported details, see the report; for the documented standard feature, see Google Ads Help and the Google Ads API asset workflow.
