Goodnotes can be worth paying for on iPad if you regularly handwrite notes or annotate PDFs and need fewer file limits, watermark-free exports, or features such as cross-platform sync and collaboration. If you only take occasional notes on one iPad, try the free plan first; upgrade only if a specific limit or paid feature gets in your way.
What you get on Goodnotes’ free plan
Goodnotes offers a free plan that its pricing page describes as free forever, rather than a time-limited trial. It lets you try the core note-taking and PDF-markup workflow before paying. The support comparison lists these limits:

Goodnotes’ pricing page summarizes the file allowance as up to three files across content types, while its support comparison breaks it down by content type. If you mostly keep a few notebooks and mark up small PDFs, those constraints may be manageable. They matter more if you import large documents, keep many files, record lengthy lectures, or need clean exports for sharing.
How the paid options differ
Goodnotes lists Essential and Pro as annual subscriptions, alongside a one-time Special Edition purchase for Apple devices. The following prices are the US prices surfaced on Goodnotes’ official materials; the company says prices vary by region, so check your local storefront for current terms.

Feature availability can depend on region, plan, and rollout. Goodnotes says Goodnotes Cloud sync may be rolling out gradually. Some collaboration and AI features are Pro-only or may require AI Pass. AI Pass is an optional paid add-on for eligible paid plans and regions, not available on Free; check the local checkout page for its current price and feature allowances.
Which iPad use cases justify paying?
Stay on Free for occasional notes and markup
Free is a sensible starting point if you use a small number of files, import modest PDFs, do not mind watermarked exports, and rarely record audio. You can decide based on your own workflow rather than paying in advance for features you may not use.

Consider a paid option when limits disrupt routine work
If you maintain more notebooks or documents than Free allows, need larger imports, want watermark-free exports, or record more audio, a paid plan may remove practical friction. Essential covers many of these limits without requiring Pro’s additional collaboration and advanced AI features.

Pro is relevant when you expect to use features such as real-time collaboration, private link sharing, Google Drive integration, Goodnotes Cloud library sync, or advanced AI. Compare the feature you actually need with the recurring cost. Cross-platform access is not the same as Goodnotes Cloud library sync: confirm that the exact sync behavior you want is included and available for your account before subscribing.

Weigh the one-time option against cloud needs
Special Edition may appeal if you want a one-time purchase for Apple devices and its available features suit your needs. It is not eligible for Goodnotes Cloud, and regional availability varies, so it may not fit someone who needs that cross-platform library sync.
Practical checks before you pay
- Identify the specific Free limit you are hitting: file count, storage, import size, export watermark, or recording time.
- Decide whether you need cross-platform access generally or Goodnotes Cloud library sync specifically.
- Check whether the AI or collaboration feature you want is included in your plan or requires Pro or AI Pass.
- Verify your local price, plan terms, and Special Edition availability in the relevant storefront; prices and entitlements can change.
- If you plan to write by hand, an Apple Pencil is optional, not a requirement. Match the Pencil model to your iPad before buying.
Verdict: is Goodnotes worth it on iPad?
For regular handwriting or PDF annotation, Goodnotes can justify a subscription when its free limits interfere with your work or when you will use a paid feature consistently. For lighter, single-iPad use, Free is the lower-risk choice. Treat Essential and Pro as different feature sets rather than automatic upgrades: pay for the limit or capability you can name, and confirm its current availability in your region.
