The paper reported that the rise submerged low-lying parts of the Gomti Riverfront, which was closed indefinitely. The specific reading has not been independently matched to an official gauge record.
How high did the Gomti rise?
Hindustan Times reported a river level of 108.14 metres and quoted irrigation department executive engineer Mukesh Vaish giving 105.70 metres as the normal level maintained for the Gomti. The difference is 2.44 metres, or nearly eight feet. These are figures in the newspaper’s 3 October report, not a verified time series or an independently confirmed gauge reading.

The National Water Data Portal describes an hourly river-level telemetry dataset from Uttar Pradesh’s Surface Water Department, but the available information does not identify a station and observation time that confirm the 108.14-metre figure. Treat it as a reported reading rather than a confirmed live level.

The Hindustan Times report attributed the rise to runoff from upstream catchment areas, including Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit and Sitapur, reaching Lucknow. Vaish told the newspaper: “Water coming from the upstream catchment areas has started reaching Lucknow, resulting in the rise in the Gomti’s water level.”

According to the official quoted in the report, fresh rain in Lucknow was not the primary driver. Water generated farther upstream can continue downstream after local rainfall has eased, so a pause in rain in the city does not by itself show that the river level will fall.
What measures did officials take?
Hindustan Times reported that officials opened all 10 barrage gates to allow water to move downstream and reduce the possibility of it backing up toward the city. The newspaper also said 48 drainage outlets connected to the river were closed to prevent river water from flowing back into the city’s drainage network. These are measures reported by the paper; the report does not independently assess their flood-control effectiveness.

Is the Gomti Riverfront open?
At the time of the 3 October reports, low-lying sections of the riverfront were submerged and the public site was closed indefinitely. A separate report that day said ticketing had been suspended and no reopening date had been announced. That is the status reported at publication, not confirmation of current access. Check notices from the Lucknow Development Authority or district authorities before travelling.
Was the Gomti expected to fall?
Hindustan Times reported that the irrigation department expected the level to begin falling from Monday if upstream inflow eased. This was a conditional outlook in the 3 October report, not confirmation that the river subsequently fell. The current level and upstream conditions cannot be inferred from that dated expectation.

Where to check current levels and flood information
Use official sources for current observations and warnings, and check the timestamp and station before comparing readings. The National Water Data Portal describes Uttar Pradesh’s hourly river-level telemetry data with fields including date, station, river and level; the portal metadata listed an update on 28 September 2026. That dataset information does not, by itself, verify the news report’s specific figure.

- India Meteorological Department, Lucknow: the IMD lists Gomti among rivers covered by meteorological support from its Lucknow Flood Meteorological Office.
- Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner: the portal points readers to Central Water Commission flood forecasts, IMD and state disaster-management and irrigation resources. It advises checking displayed information against final documents from the responsible authorities.
When reviewing an update, distinguish an observed water level from a forecast and note any warning threshold only when the responsible source states it for the relevant station. The sources reviewed for this report do not establish a threshold comparison for the reported 108.14-metre level.
