For most players, the Xbox re-release is the easiest way to play GoldenEye 007 with updated controls and couch multiplayer. Choose the Nintendo Switch version for handheld play or online multiplayer. On PC, the right option depends on what you want: GoldenEye: Source is a multiplayer conversion, 1964GEPD is an emulator and modding setup, and Goldeneye Recomp is a newer project that requires separately sourced game files.

Official releases: the simplest ways to play
Xbox: best all-round pick for a living-room setup
Xbox describes its edition as the original game enhanced for modern play. It supports dual analogue controls, native 16:9, a consistent refresh rate, achievements, and up to 4K Ultra HD where supported. Xbox also lists 20 campaign missions, unlockable cheats, and four-player local split-screen. Xbox Wire’s January 2023 announcement described access through Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and said owners of a digital copy of Rare Replay could download GoldenEye 007 without Game Pass. Nintendo says the game is available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. The Switch version can be played handheld and includes online multiplayer, a first for the game. PC options: three different projects, not one “PC version”
GoldenEye: Source: a multiplayer conversion
GoldenEye: Source is a fan-made multiplayer conversion inspired by GoldenEye. Its FAQ describes the project as still in development, so treat it as a separate multiplayer project—not a way to play the original single-player campaign. For Windows 11, the published minimum configuration is an Intel or AMD processor, DirectX 9 support, 8 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of free disk space; the recommendation is 16 GB of RAM and a dedicated graphics card. 1964GEPD: emulation with mouse controls and mods
1964GEPD is a specialist PC setup built around an N64 emulator for GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. Project materials describe mouse controls and mod possibilities, and the GitHub repository considers the edition feature-complete as of 2023. Goldeneye Recomp v1.0: a separate-file requirement
Tom’s Hardware reported on June 15, 2026, that developer SunJaycy released Goldeneye Recomp v1.0, a Windows recompilation of the canceled Xbox 360/XBLA version. The report lists controller support, online multiplayer, widescreen, graphics settings and filters, and a claimed stable 60 FPS. Those are reported project features, not independently tested results. The repository does not contain the game code or assets, and users must find the required game files themselves; the game was never publicly released. The report does not establish a legal route to obtain those files, so it cannot be treated as an official or self-contained PC release. Tom’s Hardware report.

How to choose
- Want the original campaign with minimal setup? Choose an official Xbox or Switch release. Xbox is geared toward dual-analogue play and local split-screen; Switch adds handheld play and online multiplayer through its subscription catalog.
- Want local multiplayer on a console? Xbox offers four-player split-screen.
- Want online play? The Switch release is an official option. GoldenEye: Source and Goldeneye Recomp are PC projects with multiplayer features, but they are not the same game or setup as the original console release.
- Want a mouse and mods? Look at 1964GEPD, understanding that it is an emulator setup and does not provide the ROMs.
- Want a fan-made multiplayer experience instead of the campaign? Consider GoldenEye: Source and follow its own current setup guidance.
- Want the unreleased Xbox 360 build on PC? Goldeneye Recomp is the relevant project, but its separate game-file requirement makes it a more involved route.
