GoFundMe says it makes money through optional tips from donors. Separately, a transaction fee is deducted from donations to cover payment processing and secure delivery. Starting and managing a fundraiser is free, but that does not mean every donation reaches its beneficiary in full. The exact fee depends on the country and fundraiser type.
GoFundMe’s revenue model, in brief
GoFundMe identifies optional donor tips as how it makes money. Donors can change the tip amount to zero; its terms say tips help support fundraising tools, customer support, and Trust & Safety. A separate transaction fee is deducted from donations. GoFundMe says this fee covers payment processing and secure delivery, rather than charging a platform fee to start or maintain an ordinary fundraiser.

For a US individual fundraiser, GoFundMe’s Help Center gives a transaction fee of 2.9% plus $0.30 per donation. Its example: of a $50 donation, $1.75 is deducted and $48.25 reaches the beneficiary. That example applies to the stated US individual-fundraiser context; it is not a universal rate.

The fee combines a percentage and a fixed amount, so the deduction is calculated per donation. A fundraiser’s total deductions therefore depend in part on the size and number of gifts. GoFundMe says transaction fees cover credit, debit, and ACH charges and secure delivery. It also says most fundraisers support payment methods including PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Check the current GoFundMe pricing page for the applicable country and fundraiser type.
Recurring donations have a separate stated fee
GoFundMe’s Help Center guide, updated September 30, 2026, says donors who choose recurring donations pay a 5% fee per donation. This is a separate stated charge for recurring gifts, not a replacement for checking the transaction-fee rate that applies to the fundraiser.

Why “free to start” does not mean fee-free donations
GoFundMe says it does not charge a platform fee to start or maintain a fundraiser. But transaction fees are deducted from donations, and optional tips may be added by donors. In practical terms, a fundraiser organizer can start without an upfront platform charge, while the amount received from donations reflects applicable deductions.

For a particular fundraiser, review its displayed fee information and the official pricing details rather than assuming all donation amounts, payment types, or destinations produce the same net amount.

Fees vary by country and fundraiser type
GoFundMe’s pricing page lists rates by country and distinguishes individual or business fundraisers from certified charity fundraisers. It also notes that international transaction and currency-conversion fees may apply, and that GoFundMe Pro has different pricing. The US individual example should not be used to estimate costs for a charity fundraiser, a fundraiser in another country, or GoFundMe Pro.
For an apples-to-apples comparison with another fundraising option, compare the same currency and geography, fundraiser type, and gift schedule. Include both the percentage and fixed fee per donation, identify who pays each charge, account for any optional donor tip, and check for international conversion fees. GoFundMe Pro should be considered separately from the standard fundraiser pricing.

What organizers and donors should check
- Organizers: Confirm the country-specific rate and fundraiser category on the official pricing page before estimating how much will reach the beneficiary.
- Donors: Treat the optional tip and the transaction deduction as distinct. GoFundMe says a donor can set the optional tip to zero.
- Recurring-gift donors: Account for the stated 5% fee per recurring donation in the Help Center guide updated September 30, 2026.
- Cross-border fundraisers: Check whether international transaction or conversion fees apply.
- GoFundMe Pro users: Consult its separate pricing rather than applying standard fundraiser rates.
