Use the GoF State pattern when an object’s lifecycle changes what its operations mean and state-specific behavior is becoming scattered across conditionals. For a small, stable set of states, an enum and conditional may be clearer; for a regular transition graph with little unique behavior per state, a table may fit better. The choice depends on the domain’s behavior and transition structure—not a universal number of states.
What the GoF State pattern is for
State represents an object whose appropriate behavior changes with its internal lifecycle state. Instead of asking callers to choose an operation or algorithm for every request, a context delegates behavior to an object representing its current state. A closed account, for example, may permit different operations from an active account; the lifecycle, rather than an arbitrary caller preference, governs what is appropriate.

The object-oriented pattern is one way to implement a state machine, not a requirement for every state machine. MIT’s 2008 lecture on state-machine patterns distinguishes a machine represented as a class or object from state represented as an object or an enumeration. The GoF form—state as an object—is useful in specialized circumstances and can be clumsy when the domain does not call for it: MIT OpenCourseWare: State machine patterns.

Choose an implementation by the shape of the problem
Compare how much behavior differs by state, how many operations need state-dependent branches, who owns transitions, whether the transition graph is regular, and how much maintenance overhead the implementation adds. Language features matter too: exhaustive matching over enums or sealed types may make a compact representation safer and easier to navigate.

| Situation | Likely starting point | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| A few stable states; short, local differences | Boolean or enum with a conditional or match | Direct control flow avoids extra delegation and types. Godot’s version 3.3 documentation lists enum-plus-match as one possible approach; it does not establish a universal state-count cutoff. |
| Meaningfully different behavior across multiple operations | GoF State objects | State-specific behavior can be grouped in the relevant state object, with the context delegating to its active state. |
| A large, regular graph with little unique behavior per state | Transition table | The mapping from current state and input to next state is explicit as data, without requiring a bespoke behavior class for every state. |
| A caller or configuration selects among interchangeable algorithms | Strategy | The caller’s choice of algorithm is central; the object is not necessarily progressing through a lifecycle. |
| Hierarchical states, guards, history, or parallel behavior are required | Assess a statechart, FSM library, or modeling tool | A basic State class hierarchy may not express these richer machine features cleanly. Check a candidate tool’s current capabilities before relying on them. |
When state objects earn their extra structure
GoF State is most compelling when several operations vary substantially by state and the variations belong together. If the alternative is a growing set of branches spread across methods, state-specific objects can give those behaviors a clear home and let the context delegate to its current state.
Godot’s version 3.3 tutorial illustrates the idea with separate Idle and Run state scripts for a game character. It also describes alternatives: child nodes for states, an enum with a match statement, or swapping state scripts at runtime. Those alternatives matter: the example demonstrates a design choice, not a rule that game characters—or other stateful objects—must use separate state classes. See Godot 3.3: State design pattern.

Lifecycle-changing business entities and interfaces interacting with users or databases can also be candidates for state-machine modeling. The decisive question is whether the lifecycle makes behavior meaningfully different, not whether the object merely has a field named status.

If states are few, stable, and differ only in brief local checks, an enum or Boolean with a conditional can keep the logic visible in one place. Each extra state class brings navigation, delegation, and another type to understand. If those classes mostly repeat boilerplate or duplicate logic, the abstraction makes the design harder to follow rather than easier.

There is no general state-count threshold that determines when to switch. Godot 3.3 documents enum-and-match as a valid alternative, while MIT’s lecture emphasizes that the State-as-object form fits specialized cases. A secondary guide’s “4+ states” rule is only that author’s heuristic, not a broadly supported design standard.
When a transition table is a better fit
In a regular, behavior-poor machine, the central design problem may be the transition graph itself: which input takes each state to which next state. A table makes that mapping explicit as data and can be easier to inspect than a class for every state. State objects are more natural when each state also owns substantial, distinct behavior. This is a design trade-off, not a claim that tables are universally faster or simpler. See SE Book: State for supplementary discussion of table-driven machines.

Keep State and Strategy distinct by intent
State and Strategy can have similar object structures: both may expose an interface and delegate work to a concrete implementation. Their intent differs. Strategy packages algorithms that can be selected and interchanged; State models a machine whose behavior follows its current state and changes as the lifecycle progresses. Ask what drives the change and who owns it: a caller choosing an algorithm points toward Strategy, while a lifecycle transition points toward State. Neither the class diagram nor the use of an interface alone settles the choice.
Decide who owns transitions
A State implementation must make transition responsibility coherent. The context or machine can decide when to switch states, or individual state objects can trigger transitions. The better split depends on where transition stimuli originate and how uniform the events are across states. If the rules are divided without a clear convention, reviewers may have to search multiple objects to understand one transition.

- Keep transition decisions in the context when the machine needs one central view of the rules.
- Let states trigger transitions when the transition naturally follows from state-specific behavior and the ownership remains easy to trace.
- Review event coverage and invalid actions whichever design you choose; a state interface does not by itself define what should happen for every event.
Account for testing and maintenance costs
Separate state classes can make state-specific behavior easier to isolate, but testing is not automatically easier. The machine’s transitions and invalid actions still need coverage. Exposing state interfaces can help create fakes, while making states less encapsulated; that is a trade-off to resolve deliberately, not an automatic benefit of the pattern.
Before adding state objects, consider the full maintenance cost: extra types, delegation, coupling between the context and states, transition ownership, duplicated behavior, and the tests needed to cover the machine. The consulted sources do not establish a general performance advantage for GoF State or its alternatives. Performance claims should be tied to measurements of the implementation in question.
Use the pattern as a hypothesis, not a default
PMI’s Disciplined Agile reference cautions: “State machines are not required nearly as often as they are used so the use of this pattern should be a yellow flag.” Treat that as a prompt to check whether a machine is warranted and whether state objects are the right representation—not as a measured statistic or a ban on the pattern. PMI’s reference also frames the practical question as whether there is a cleaner approach: PMI Disciplined Agile: The State Pattern.
