Godox C100 Review: A Toy Camera with a Surprisingly Useful Light Meter

The Godox C100’s built-in light meter is more compelling than its 2MP camera. Here’s who might find the unusual transparent-viewfinder design worthwhile.

The Godox C100 is hard to recommend as an everyday camera, but its built-in light meter gives it a more practical purpose than its 2MP photos suggest. Reviewers found the meter useful as an exposure reference for film photography; they also found the transparent viewfinder awkward and the camera’s image-making limited. Think of it as a pocketable meter with a novelty camera attached—not a capable compact camera.

What makes the Godox C100 unusual?

Godox calls the C100 its Transparent Viewfinder Camera and describes it as the company’s first camera with an integrated light meter. Instead of a conventional rear display for composing and reviewing pictures, it uses a transparent panel. You can see the scene through it while shooting information and framing guides appear over the view.

That panel is not a playback screen: the C100 deliberately omits instant photo review. The distinction matters. You can see overlays while taking a picture, but you cannot check the result on the camera afterward. Godox says the screen’s transmittance is greater than 50%, and that metering reads brightness from the central 25% of the frame. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measures of usability or exposure accuracy. Godox’s C100 product page also lists four aspect ratios: 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, and 1:1.

Is the light meter actually useful?

It is the C100’s strongest reason to exist. Amateur Photographer’s Andy Westlake reported in August 2026 that the readings were sensible and aligned with the reviewer’s other meters. TechRadar’s Jon Stapley likewise found readings consistent with a dedicated meter in a comparison with the TTArtisan Light Meter II. Those are individual reviewer findings, not a calibration guarantee for every scene or unit.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

SMotographers’ Marvin Kuhn reported readings generally within around two-thirds of a stop of the expected exposure in that reviewer’s tests. Treat that as one test result, not a rated accuracy specification. Taken together, the reviews suggest the C100 can provide a useful exposure reference, especially for slower film shooting, but do not establish laboratory-grade precision or performance in every lighting condition.

Amateur Photographer reports settings covering ISO 100–800, apertures from f/1 to f/64, and shutter-priority speeds from 1 second to 1/8000 second. Those ranges describe the controls reported by that reviewer; they should not be mistaken for a promise that every exposure combination is available in every mode.

Where does the camera fall short?

Framing takes work

The transparent viewfinder sounds simpler than it is. TechRadar found it difficult to keep both the subject and the frame lines in view, with accuracy suffering unless the camera was held close. SMotographers also found framing difficult even after practice. This makes the C100 a poor fit for quick, precise composition.

Image quality and control are basic

Reviewers report 2MP still images and Full HD video at 30 frames per second. Amateur Photographer describes the camera as an “OK” cheap toy camera, while TechRadar characterizes the stills as modest and reports jittery video, pronounced rolling shutter, and dropped frames. SMotographers also notes the lack of manual controls and says highlights and shadows were easily lost in that reviewer’s experience. These limitations make the C100 more suited to experimentation than dependable everyday photography.

The meter is not a complete replacement for a dedicated tool

The C100 cannot be mounted on a camera hot shoe, according to TechRadar, and SMotographers says it does not support flash metering. TechRadar also found it better suited to slower work than fast street shooting. If you need a meter attached to your camera or readings for flash setups, those are meaningful omissions.

Who should consider buying the C100?

  • Film photographers curious about a compact exposure reference: The built-in meter is the most defensible practical use, provided its lack of hot-shoe mounting and flash metering suits your workflow.
  • People who want a deliberately unconventional camera: The transparent overlay and no-playback approach make it an unusual device to experiment with, but the trade-off is awkward framing and limited image control.
  • People seeking a dependable everyday camera: The low-resolution stills, reported video problems, and challenging viewfinder make it a poor match for that job.

Should you buy the Godox C100?

Buy it only if the built-in meter and unusual transparent-viewfinder concept are the point. The meter received encouraging, but reviewer-specific, feedback; the camera itself is a weak choice if you care about easy framing, creative control, or polished video. If you need hot-shoe mounting or flash metering, look at the dedicated light-meter category instead. No reliable current market-wide price comparison is established here, so judge any listing against what you specifically need from the meter and camera.
