The project documents an 80-column default, comment-preserving behavior and command-line, editor and library workflows. Unlike a formatter that only applies a familiar baseline style, it intentionally changes how some Go code is laid out; review its output against your team’s conventions before adopting it.
What gocondense does
The project describes gocondense as a formatter that places multiline Go constructs on single lines where they fit, with the aim of reducing vertical noise while preserving readability. Its README says formatting is line-length aware, idempotent and preserves comments. These are project-documented properties, not independent test results. See the official repository.

Its transformations cover several kinds of syntax, but eligibility depends on the construct’s layout and contents. A line that would exceed the configured limit, or a construct containing comments or multiline elements that prevent condensing, may remain multiline or be only partly condensed.

Constructs it may condense or simplify
- Multiline function signatures and calls.
- Slice, array and unkeyed struct literals, plus eligible keyed literals and maps.
- Binary expressions, selector chains and generic instantiations.
- Adjacent parameters or results that share a type can be grouped.
- Eligible one-item import, const, var or type groups can be unwrapped; redundant parentheses and some blank lines can be removed.
- Empty function bodies, structs and interfaces can be collapsed.
For keyed literals, the README’s examples specify a layout condition: the first element must already be on the same line as the opening brace for that literal to be condensed. Comments, multiline arguments or elements, and other layout rules can also prevent a transformation.

Line length and formatting expectations
The documented --max-len default is 80 columns. The documented --tab-width default is four spaces for calculating line length; these settings affect when a construct fits, not a promise that every line will have the same visual width in every editor. The project’s library example uses a custom limit of 120 columns and tab width 2, showing that the defaults are configurable.
The author described gocondense in a March 11, 2026 Go Forum discussion as a “superset” of gofmt, explaining: “running gofmt on code formatted with gocondense will never result in further changes.” Treat that as the author’s explanation of the compatibility claim, not a separately verified guarantee for every version. If gofmt is part of your existing workflow, run both formatters in the order your team intends to use and check whether the resulting diff is acceptable. The project discussion is at Go Forum.

Install and run the command-line formatter
The project documents installation with Go’s go install. File targets are formatted in place, so inspect or commit your working tree before running it on a project.

According to the README, generated files, vendor, testdata and paths listed in go.mod ignore directives are skipped unless explicitly named as arguments. Check the command’s output and your version’s documentation before relying on those exclusions in an automated workflow.

Use it from an editor or as a Go library
The README documents integration instructions for VS Code’s Go extension, GoLand file watchers, vim-go, a Vim autocommand and Neovim with conform.nvim. Follow the repository’s editor-specific instructions, then confirm that saving a file invokes gocondense and that the resulting changes match the project’s intended style.
For programmatic use, the project documents adding the module with go get github.com/abemedia/gocondense@latest and formatting source through gocondense.Source(src). It also documents creating a formatter with gocondense.New(gocondense.Config{...}) to set options such as line length and tab width. The API reference says zero-valued configuration fields receive defaults and that Source returns an error if parsing or formatting fails; see Go Packages. Its v0.4.1 page is marked as published May 25, 2026, but the page cautions that it may not show the latest module version.

Is gocondense a good fit for a Go codebase?
It is worth considering when a team wants a compact alternative layout and is willing to review the formatter’s transformations as part of its style policy. It may be a poor fit if the team expects gofmt-style output alone, strongly prefers vertically expanded calls or literals, or has not agreed on how the formatter should interact with existing editor and CI checks.

- Review representative diffs: try signatures, calls, literals, comments and expressions from your own code before applying the formatter broadly.
- Choose one formatting workflow: document whether gocondense runs on save, in a manual command, or in CI, and how it relates to gofmt.
- Check shared configuration: agree on line-length and tab-width settings so developers do not produce different layouts.
- Evaluate readability locally: the project presents reduced vertical noise as its goal, but the reviewed sources do not provide measured readability or performance results.
