Go RAG Deletion: How to Remove Claim Documents and Stop Stale Retrieval

Deleting an indexed vector may not remove every source-derived record. Define the deletion scope, account for each store, and test retrieved context and provenance.

If a claim document still appears in retrieved context after a deletion request, the delete may have affected only one part of the pipeline—or retrieval may still be searching another copy. In a Go RAG system, define exactly what must be removed, trace it through every store, and test what retrieval returns afterward. A vector-store delete call alone does not establish that all source-derived data is gone.

Why can deleted claim content still appear in retrieval?

A RAG pipeline can represent one source document as several linked records: the original attachment or document, extracted text, chunks, embeddings, and metadata used to find or identify those records. A retrieval path may search indexed vectors and then load associated chunk text for its context. If cleanup affects only one layer, another may still supply content or provenance.

One Go package documents this separation explicitly: its ragcore documentation describes a ChunkStore for text, file linkage, and metadata, alongside a VectorStore for embeddings, and includes an operation to delete a file’s vectors. That example illustrates an architectural possibility; it does not establish how every Go RAG adapter stores or deletes data.

What exactly should a deletion request remove?

Start with the business object named in the request, then map it to the records your implementation persists. Depending on the intended action, the deletion subject might be a claim attachment, a source document, a particular document version, or an individual chunk. These are different scopes: deleting one chunk is not automatically the same operation as removing every record derived from a document.

  • Domain identity: the claim attachment, document, version, or chunk the request concerns.
  • Index identity: the IDs assigned to the document’s chunks or other indexed records.
  • Relationships: the mapping from the source and version to each chunk, vector, and metadata record.
  • Persistence layers: every store that can retain source-derived text, vectors, linkage, or metadata.

Keep the domain identifier traceable to the index record IDs. If a source is replaced or reprocessed, the implementation needs to know which old records belong to that source or version; otherwise, cleanup can target the wrong records or leave stale ones behind. The APIs cited here demonstrate ID-based operations, but do not establish universal ID-generation, retry, or transaction behavior.

How do deletion APIs differ across Go and managed RAG examples?

The following are bounded examples from separate products, not interchangeable implementations or a universal Go RAG standard. Their documentation establishes some selectors and retrieval behaviors, but not a complete account of cross-store cleanup or consistency.

Question ChromaDB Go client Google Cloud RAG Engine
Deletion unit and selectors The Go client documentation shows deletion by IDs, a metadata filter, or a document-content filter. The RAG Engine API reference documents deleting a named RagFile resource.
Stores affected The cited client documentation describes collection records and delete selectors; whether another chunk-text or source-metadata store is also cleaned up is not stated in that source. The cited API documents a RagFile deletion endpoint; whether all associated text, vectors, or other records are removed, and when, is not stated in that source.
Completion and consistency Synchronous completion guarantees, transaction boundaries, partial-failure behavior, and retry semantics are not stated in the cited documentation. The cited endpoint identifies the deletion operation, but its completion guarantees, transaction boundaries, partial-failure behavior, and retry semantics are not stated in that source.
Retrieval filtering The cited client documentation establishes deletion selectors; matching retrieval-filter behavior is not stated in that source. The metadata-search documentation says retrieval considers only files matching the metadata expression. This describes candidate selection, not proof of record erasure.
Score interpretation Score direction or metric interpretation is not stated in the cited client documentation. The RagContexts reference says score meaning depends on the underlying database and metric. In its cosine-distance example, values range from 0 (most relevant) to 2 (least relevant).

Use the exact backend and adapter version deployed in your system to resolve the details the examples do not establish. In particular, check whether delete completion is synchronous or represented by an operation to monitor, and what happens after retries, partial failures, or reindexing.

Does a retrieval filter delete the underlying claim data?

No. A metadata filter can limit which files retrieval considers for a query; it does not, by itself, show that stored records were erased. Google Cloud’s metadata-search guide describes matching files as the retrieval constraint. Treat that behavior as query scoping, not as a replacement for the deletion operation required by your data lifecycle.

Keep the two paths distinct in both design and tests: deletion changes persisted data according to the backend’s documented behavior, while filtering changes the candidates considered for a particular retrieval. A filter may be useful for query scope, but passing a filtered query cannot verify that the source-derived records have been removed.

How should a Go pipeline implement and verify deletion?

  1. Resolve the request scope. Identify whether the request concerns a claim attachment, whole source document, version, or chunk, and obtain its stable domain identifier.
  2. Build the record set. Use the stored source-to-chunk relationship to enumerate every index record and linked record that belongs to the deletion scope. Avoid relying on an undocumented assumption that a vector ID also identifies a text or metadata record.
  3. Call the selected backend’s documented delete operation. Use the selector and resource scope supported by the deployed adapter. For Chroma’s Go client, the documented options include IDs, metadata filters, and document-content filters; for Google Cloud’s RAG Engine API, the reference documents deleting a named RagFile.
  4. Handle the result according to that backend’s guarantees. Confirm from the exact version’s documentation how completion, retries, partial failures, and any follow-up indexing work. The examples above do not establish universal transaction or idempotency guarantees.
  5. Check each persistence layer. Verify removal or the documented disposition of vectors, chunk text, source linkage, and metadata relevant to the requested scope. Record enough provenance to diagnose a failed or incomplete cleanup.
  6. Test retrieval independently. Query with terms likely to match the removed material and inspect both returned context text and its provenance. Do not treat a successful delete-call response alone as proof that retrieval can no longer return the content.

When retrieval results include scores, interpret them using the configured metric rather than assuming that a larger number means a closer match. Google Cloud’s RagContexts reference illustrates why: score meaning depends on the database and metric, and its cosine-distance example assigns lower values to more relevant results. Set test expectations against the metric actually configured in your implementation.

What does this mean for insurance claims intake?

The technical sources described here explain general RAG APIs and data-lifecycle patterns; they do not specify insurance retention duties, privacy requirements, claims workflows, or legal deletion rules. The system owner must map the technical operation to the organization’s approved records lifecycle and applicable jurisdiction-specific requirements. This article does not determine what claim data must be retained or erased.
