Before opening your WooCommerce store to customers, complete a test purchase from product page to confirmation, verify that checkout shows the right payment, tax and shipping outcomes, and confirm that your payment gateway is in live mode. Then decide whether to turn off Coming soon mode. Use the checklist below in that order: it catches problems in the same customer journey the launch depends on.

What to check before launching a WooCommerce store
A WooCommerce store launch checklist is more than a visual review of the homepage. It checks the connected parts of a sale: a customer can find a published product, see the intended price and availability, complete checkout using the payment method offered, receive the appropriate tax and shipping calculation, and get confirmation. The store administrator should also be able to find the resulting order and understand its status.

Work through the checks with your actual catalogue, payment setup, store address, destinations and delivery rules. A checkout that looks correct for one address or product does not prove the same result for another. Keep a short record of the test inputs and outcomes so you can distinguish a configuration change from a failed test if you need to repeat a check.
WooCommerce’s official setup checklist moves through products, payments, store customization, sales tax, shipping when applicable, and launch. The sequence below follows that logic, with the complete test order as the final launch gate.

1. Check the products and catalogue
Start with the products a customer is expected to buy on launch day. A product can exist in the administration area without being ready for public sale, so check the customer-facing listing rather than relying only on the editing screen.
- Publication: confirm each launch product is published and can be reached through the part of the store where customers are expected to find it.
- Price: confirm the displayed price is the one you intend to charge. Check that the amount remains consistent when the item is selected in the purchase flow.
- Images: verify the product image shown to customers is the intended one and appears on the listing and product view.
- Stock status: check that the displayed availability agrees with whether the item can actually be ordered. Correct any mismatch before testing checkout.
Choose representative products for later checkout tests, including any items whose price, availability or shipping treatment differs from the rest of the catalogue. The purpose is not to test every possible combination, but to avoid assuming that one ordinary product proves every kind of order behaves correctly.
2. Verify payment setup and failure handling
Connect at least one payment method and test the full customer-facing flow. A successful setup is not established merely because a gateway appears as an option: confirm that a customer can select it, submit an order and reach the expected result in the order record.
Run a successful payment test
Use the gateway’s test mode and the test credentials or payment details it supports. Test-mode orders are intended to process through the same order path as real card orders, so they exercise the customer’s checkout steps without treating the test as an ordinary live-card purchase. For WooPayments, the administration pages show test data while test mode is enabled and display a notice to remind the administrator that the mode is active.
- Enable test mode for the payment gateway you are checking.
- Place an order as a customer, selecting the gateway and completing its test payment flow.
- Check the customer-facing result after submission and find the matching order in the administration area.
- Confirm the order has the status you expected for a successful test, and note any unexpected message or missing order detail.
A failed or confusing result is a reason to investigate before launch, not to infer that the gateway will behave correctly in live mode. The result you want is a clear completion path for a successful payment and a record that lets you identify the order.

Test a declined or failed payment
Use the gateway’s supported test scenario for a failed payment, if available. Check the error shown to the customer. It should make clear that the payment did not complete and that the customer needs to take another action, rather than implying that the order has been paid. Confirm that the corresponding order outcome is consistent with the failed payment. Do not invent card details or use a real card to force a decline in a test-mode scenario.

Before accepting customer payments, verify that the gateway is in live mode. In that mode, confirm that payouts are configured to go to the correct bank account. These are separate checks: a gateway can be live while its payout destination is not the account you intended. If more than one gateway is enabled, check the mode and payout destination for each one you plan to offer.
Keep test and live results distinct when reviewing WooPayments pages. Test-mode data is not evidence that a real payout has reached your bank account, and a test order is not a substitute for confirming the live configuration.
3. Set and test sales tax
Choose the tax approach for the store and configure any tax service you plan to use. Treat the checkout calculation as one part of tax administration, not as a determination that the store owes tax in a particular place. WooCommerce Tax calculates tax at checkout; it does not decide where you have a tax obligation or file returns for you.
If you use WooCommerce Tax
The store address must be complete, and the site must be connected to WordPress.com for WooCommerce Tax to work. Check these prerequisites before treating an absent or unexpected tax calculation as a rate problem. Then test a checkout using an address for a customer in the same state as the store address if the store is in the United States.

For a US store, a checkout addressed to another state can show a tax amount of $0 when no additional rate applies. That result can be expected; it does not by itself demonstrate that the tax feature is broken. Test with the addresses relevant to your business and interpret the outcome in light of the rates configured for those locations.
Keep tax configuration separate from tax obligations
For sales outside the store’s home country, check applicable VAT, GST or other rules separately. The checkout tool’s calculation does not determine whether registration, collection or filing is required. The WooCommerce Tax feature is not a substitute for that decision or for filing the required returns.
4. Check shipping for the regions you serve
Shipping should be tested with sample customer addresses, not just reviewed as a list of configured methods. Confirm that the store location, the destinations you serve, shipping zones and methods result in the options and rates a customer should see. Shipping is not applicable to every store, but if customers need delivery, an incorrect destination or rate can prevent checkout or set the wrong expectation.
- Identify the regions you intend to serve and select a representative address in each one.
- Enter each sample address during checkout and confirm that the expected shipping option appears.
- Review the rate shown for that region against the rate you intended to offer.
- If free shipping is offered above a threshold, test an order below the threshold and an order that reaches it. Confirm that the free option appears at the intended amount and not before it.
Do not treat one successful address as proof that all zones work. If an option is missing or a rate is unexpected, check which zone and method apply to the sample destination before changing a broader setting. Retest the affected address after making a correction.
5. Place a complete WooCommerce test order before launch
A WooCommerce test order before launch is the end-to-end check that ties the preceding settings together. Start as a customer and continue through confirmation; then check the same order from the administration side. This catches issues that separate settings checks can miss, such as a payment option that appears but does not complete the flow.

- Open a launch product as a customer and add it to the cart.
- Enter a sample customer address that exercises the tax and shipping case you want to validate.
- Review the cart and checkout totals, including the product price, tax and shipping shown for that order.
- Select a payment method and complete the supported test-mode payment.
- Review the customer’s confirmation page and check whether the expected confirmation email arrives.
- Find the order in WooCommerce administration and compare its status and details with the customer-facing result.
Test orders can trigger order emails, appear in WooCommerce analytics and help diagnose integrations. Those are useful side effects, but they also mean test activity can be visible in store records. Keep track of which order was created for the launch check so it is not mistaken for a customer sale during your review.
Manual test mode or the Test Orders extension?
For a manual test, use the payment gateway’s test mode so you can check the payment portion of the customer flow without processing a real card payment. WooCommerce also documents a Test Orders extension that places test orders without processing real payments; it requires WooCommerce 5.0.0 or later.

Choose based on the part of the flow you need to validate. An order created without payment processing can help check order-related behavior, but it cannot by itself verify that a particular payment gateway’s test flow works. Conversely, a gateway test is not evidence that live payouts are configured correctly.
6. Review launch readiness and store visibility
WooCommerce’s setup checklist includes store customization and launch along with products, payments, tax and applicable shipping. Before making the store public, look through the customer-facing path you have just tested and correct any customization issue that would make the intended purchase unclear. Avoid treating appearance alone as a launch signal; the order test is the evidence that the primary transaction path completed.
Make a deliberate decision about Coming soon mode. Decide whether the store should remain private while you continue setup or become publicly accessible at launch, and set the mode accordingly. Leaving it enabled can prevent the public launch you intended; turning it off early can expose a store before the payment and checkout checks are complete.
7. Add basic operational safeguards
SSL and a recent backup are sensible pre-launch checks, though they are not the same as verifying a WooCommerce transaction. Confirm that the site is served securely before directing customers to checkout, and take a backup before making final configuration changes. These are general precautions rather than proof that tax, shipping or payment settings are correct.
This checklist does not establish privacy-law compliance. Consent, cookies, privacy notices and data-processing duties depend on the store’s circumstances and the jurisdictions involved; resolve those obligations separately with relevant regulator guidance or a qualified privacy professional.

Do not turn the store public solely because each setting appears configured. Use the list below as the release decision; if an item fails, correct it and repeat the relevant check before launch.
- Launch products are published with the intended prices, images and stock status.
- At least one payment method completes the supported test flow, and a failed payment produces a clear customer-facing error.
- The gateway is set to live mode for launch, with payouts directed to the correct bank account.
- Tax calculations have been checked against appropriate sample addresses, and tax obligations beyond checkout calculation have been considered separately.
- Shipping options and rates have been tested for every region served, including any free-shipping threshold.
- A complete test order has reached confirmation, and the customer email and administration order record have been checked.
- The decision on Coming soon mode matches the intended launch timing.
After those checks pass, change the visibility setting as intended and monitor the first real orders closely enough to spot an unexpected customer-facing result or order status.
