The GMKtec NucBox M8 is best understood as a small, fast Windows 11 Pro office computer rather than a gaming machine. Its six-core Ryzen 5 PRO 6650H handles demanding multitasking, while Radeon 660M integrated graphics set a clear ceiling for modern games and serious 4K creative work. Soldered 16GB RAM is the principal limitation; two M.2 slots, USB4, OCuLink, dual 2.5G Ethernet and support for three displays are the reasons to consider it.

What the GMKtec M8 is

The M8 pairs AMD’s Ryzen 5 PRO 6650H with integrated Radeon 660M graphics in a compact Windows 11 Pro system. The processor has six cores and 12 threads, a 3.3GHz base clock and up to 4.5GHz boost clock. GMKtec specifies 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory soldered to the motherboard, with 512GB or 1TB storage configurations.

Is the M8 good for office work?

Yes. This is the M8’s strongest use case. TechRadar rated it 4.5/5 and described it as highly recommended, reporting smooth operation with Microsoft Office, video calls, web browsing, streaming, Photoshop and Lightroom. Its Ryzen processor provides considerably more CPU capability than many machines of this size, so switching among documents, browser tabs, meetings and background tasks should not be the limiting factor.

The 16GB memory ceiling matters for unusually large spreadsheets, virtual machines or sustained professional workloads. For a normal office deployment, however, the processor and fast LPDDR5 memory make the M8 a credible desktop replacement in a very small enclosure.

Can it run three monitors?

The M8 is designed for multi-display work. It provides HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, and USB4 can provide another display path through a compatible dock or adapter. In practice, a three-screen setup depends on the monitor resolutions, refresh rates, cables and the USB4 device used. Confirm the exact output arrangement with your displays before buying; the presence of three possible connections does not mean every combination operates at every maximum resolution and refresh rate.

Can you upgrade the RAM and storage?

RAM: no user expansion

The 16GB LPDDR5-6400 memory is soldered to the board. There is no SO-DIMM replacement or later capacity upgrade, so choose the memory configuration carefully. This is the M8’s clearest long-term compromise.

Storage: unusually flexible

Both M.2 2280 slots accept NVMe SSDs. GMKtec states a limit of up to 8TB per slot, or 16TB total, although actual compatibility can depend on drive thickness, firmware and operating-system setup. A PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD is the directly relevant upgrade: it can add capacity without replacing the original drive, provided the selected drive fits and is supported.

  • THREE BIOS POWER MODES + DUAL-FAN COOLING - Select the operating profile that matches your workload: Silent Mode at 28W, Balanced Mode at 35W, or Performance Mode at 40W. The M8 uses a dual-fan cooling architecture with dedicated CPU and system airflow, surrounding intake vents, and smart fan control to help manage heat during multitasking, creative applications, and gaming. BIOS-selectable profiles let you prioritize lower power operation or higher performance when needed.
  • TRIPLE-DISPLAY SUPPORT + HIGH-RESOLUTION OUTPUT - Run up to three displays simultaneously through HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, and USB4. The specification lists up to 8K@60Hz support for the HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort outputs, while USB4 provides DisplayPort 1.4 video at up to 4K@60Hz. Create a multi-screen workspace for spreadsheets, research, meetings, content creation, monitoring, digital signage, or entertainment. Actual resolution depends on the display, cable, and output combination.

Back up the existing installation before opening the case. If you are adding a second drive rather than replacing the boot drive, Windows Disk Management can initialize and format it after installation.

Is the M8 good for gaming or video editing?

Gaming

Radeon 660M graphics are adequate for light gaming and everyday 3D workloads, but they are the constraint in demanding titles. The M8 should not be purchased as a high-end gaming PC: there is no independent evidence here establishing frame rates, temperatures or noise under specific games, and the integrated GPU has far less headroom than a discrete graphics card.

Photo and video work

TechRadar found Photoshop and Lightroom smooth and HD video editing acceptable. 4K editing in Premiere Pro was described as a struggle. That distinction is important: the CPU can accelerate timeline preparation and general application work, but Radeon 660M graphics and the fixed 16GB memory make sustained 4K workflows a poor fit. Editors working primarily in 1080p with modest effects should find the M8 more practical than those handling multicamera 4K, heavy color grading or complex effects.

Can you add an eGPU?

Yes, through the OCuLink PCIe Gen4 x4 port and a compatible OCuLink eGPU enclosure. This is the most direct way to overcome the Radeon 660M’s graphics ceiling while keeping the M8’s small footprint. An eGPU adds the cost, size, power supply and cable of the enclosure and graphics card, so it changes the system from a simple mini PC into a two-box setup.

  • Dual 2.5GbE LAN & WiFi 6E for Extreme Networking - Dual 2.5G Ethernet ports support link aggregation, virtualization, and home server setups. Built-in WiFi 6E ensures ultra-fast, low-latency wireless connectivity.

GMKtec warns that OCuLink is not hot-pluggable. Shut the M8 down completely before connecting or disconnecting the enclosure; do not treat the cable like a USB peripheral. Driver installation and display-cable routing also need to be planned, particularly if the monitor is connected to the M8 instead of the external GPU.

Ports, mounting and physical setup

Connectivity

USB4, dual 2.5G Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 give the M8 more connectivity than its size suggests. Dual wired networking can be useful for workstation, storage or lab arrangements, although the value depends on your network equipment and cabling.

Mounting

A VESA mount can place the M8 behind a monitor and clear desk space. TechRadar reports that the mount is optional and not included, so budget for a compatible VESA mount for mini PC if monitor-back mounting is part of your plan.

Cooling, noise and warranty considerations

The available review evidence emphasizes compact productivity performance but does not establish independent temperature, acoustic or sustained-throttling measurements. Avoid assuming that the M8 is silent or that it maintains peak boost indefinitely; place it where the vents have clear airflow.

GMKtec lists a one-year limited warranty. Confirm the seller, region and return policy at purchase, because warranty coverage and service arrangements can vary by market.

Price and value: use the date, not a headline number

TechRadar’s publication context put the 16GB/512GB model at $329, with a 1TB option also available. A September 2026 update reported an Amazon price of about $390, down from roughly $480 at that time. These are dated observations, not a current universal price; check the listing for your country and configuration before deciding.

At its best value, the M8 trades graphics performance and memory upgradeability for CPU strength, tiny dimensions and unusually broad expansion. It makes the most sense when those advantages replace a larger desktop or when a future OCuLink eGPU is part of the plan.

Who should buy the M8?

  • Buy it for: office productivity, multitasking, video calls, browsing, streaming, photo work, light 1080p editing, multiple monitors and compact desk installations.
  • Plan storage carefully: the two M.2 slots are a major advantage, while the 16GB RAM is fixed.
  • Consider an eGPU: if you need serious 3D performance and accept a separate enclosure and strict power-off connection procedure.
  • Choose something else: if your priority is modern high-end gaming, demanding 4K Premiere Pro work or user-upgradable memory.

The Bottom Line

The GMKtec M8 is a strong compact office PC whose Ryzen 5 PRO 6650H, multi-monitor support and expansion ports outweigh its limitations for productivity buyers. Its soldered 16GB RAM and Radeon 660M graphics define the boundaries: storage can grow dramatically, but memory and demanding graphics workloads cannot.
