Gmail moving low-priority emails to refreshed ‘Updates’ inbox

When Gmail moves messages into the refreshed Updates inbox (and labels them “low priority”), it’s usually not a bug. It’s Gmail’s automatic classification and inbox sorting working off patterns—sender identity, message content, engagement signals, and your historical actions.

The good news: you can steer this behavior. The most reliable approach is to correct the classification signal (mark as important / not spam) and then add a rule (filter) for repeat senders so your preference holds even as Gmail refines its model.

Below is a practical, “do-this-then-that” guide for web, iPhone/iPad, and Android—plus what to do when your changes appear to “not stick.”

What you’re seeing: refreshed Updates and low-priority sorting

Gmail’s inbox is built around tabs/categories like Primary, Social, Promotions, and Updates (naming can vary slightly by UI). When Gmail decides a message is non-urgent, it may route it to Updates instead of Primary.

#1 Best Overall
Email For Gmail
  • Check your Gmail on the go.
  • Reply to emails at any time.
  • Organize your email into various folders.

“Low priority” typically shows up when Gmail estimates the message isn’t important to you. That estimate updates over time, so your actions (for example, marking an email important) can change future routing.

Common causes (and what Gmail is actually doing)

  • Categories are enabled: Gmail splits inbox into tabs. Updates can capture notifications, account messages, and certain transactional mail.
  • Priority Inbox behavior: If you’re using Priority Inbox, Gmail still uses learned signals to decide what belongs in the “Important” area.
  • Gmail confidence score: Even if the sender looks familiar, Gmail may classify the message type (newsletter, marketing, automated alerts) as non-urgent.
  • Engagement history: If you frequently archive or ignore certain senders, Gmail may reduce their priority.
  • Unsubscribe or bounce signals: Some senders change sending practices. Combined with your interactions, Gmail may reclassify.

Before you change anything: check your current inbox settings

Two inbox modes look similar but behave differently. Start by checking which one you’re using, so you don’t chase fixes that won’t work.

Check inbox type on the Gmail website

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Click the gear icon (top right) → See all settings.
  3. Go to Inbox.
  4. Look for Inbox type and note whether it’s set to Default or Priority Inbox.
  5. In the same area, find the Categories section (Primary/Social/Promotions/Updates may appear depending on your account/UI).
  6. Click Save Changes if you change anything.

If you’re using categories, you can’t fully force Gmail to treat everything as Primary without adding rules, because categories remain part of the design.

Fix it on the Gmail website (recommended)

The web UI gives you the most control: categories, Priority Inbox, importance training, and filters that can pin certain senders to Primary every time.

Adjust Categories and Priority Inbox settings

  1. Open Gmail → gear → See all settings.
  2. Under Inbox, find Categories.
  3. If you want more of the mail to appear in Primary, consider toggling off categories (names depend on your UI): set Social/Promotions/Updates to the option that removes them from the tab view.
  4. Alternatively, switch Inbox type from Priority Inbox back to Default to reduce “low priority” routing effects.
  5. Click Save Changes.

Tradeoff: disabling tabs can make your inbox busier. If you only care about specific senders, filters usually give a cleaner result.

Turn off the specific sorting behavior driving Updates

If your UI shows a direct “Updates” tab and you don’t want Gmail using it, the most direct lever is categories. If your UI doesn’t let you disable only Updates, changing inbox type to Default is the next best method.

  1. Gmail → gear → See all settings → Inbox.
  2. Set Inbox type to Default.
  3. In Categories, disable tabs for the category that captures the “low priority” mail (often Updates).
  4. Save.

Teach Gmail using Importance markers

If the email is urgent to you but Gmail keeps classifying it as low priority, training signals can help. Do this consistently for a small set of high-value senders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open a misrouted message currently in Updates.
  2. In the message header row, click the Mark as important (or importance marker) control.
  3. If it’s marked incorrectly, you can also choose Mark as not important to correct direction.
  4. Repeat for a handful of recent messages from the same sender.

Within a few days, Gmail typically improves routing confidence—but it’s not guaranteed. Filters are the guarantee.

Create a sender rule (filter) to keep emails in Primary

Filters are the most durable fix. Use them to force messages from a sender, domain, or subject pattern into Inbox (or to apply a label and skip tabbing).

Web filter steps

  1. In Gmail, open the message that’s being routed to Updates.
  2. Click the More (three dots) menu on the message toolbar.
  3. Select Filter messages like these.
  4. In the filter builder, keep From as the sender, or modify it to a domain (e.g., @company.com).
  5. Choose what to do: check Never send it to Spam (safe default) and, if available, also set Always mark it as important.
  6. If you want the message to stay in Primary/inbox, set Category (or equivalent) to Primary (wording varies by UI).
  7. Click Create filter.
  8. Optional: if the filter builder offers Also apply filter to matching conversations, use it if you want existing threads updated.

Example filter rules that tend to work

Use case Filter condition Recommended action
Keep account alerts (login, security) From: [email protected] Never send to spam + mark as important + set Category to Primary
Keep receipts from a company From: @company.com (domain match) Never send to spam + apply label + category Primary (if shown)
Keep one newsletter type, ignore the rest Subject: Invoice or Subject:(receipt OR paid) Never send to spam + label + (category Primary if available)

If your filter UI doesn’t show a Category option, you can still force importance and prevent spam, then rely on training signals. Tabs/categories can override simple actions.

Fix it on iPhone and iPad (Gmail app)

The Gmail app is great for daily reading, but the most important controls (categories/filters) are still more reliable on the website. Still, you can fix routing signals from your iPhone or iPad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm inbox type and category behavior

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the menu icon (☰).
  3. Scroll to locate Settings → choose your Google account.
  4. Check Inbox type / Inbox categories settings if shown.
  5. If you can’t find category controls, switch to web for the exact category toggles.

Use importance actions inside the message

  1. Open a message in the Updates tab.
  2. Tap the three dots (More) menu.
  3. Look for Mark as important or an equivalent importance action.
  4. If you see the option, also choose Mark as not important when appropriate.

Do this for a few relevant emails so Gmail updates its prediction.

Create/verify a filter from the app flow

Depending on app version and account, the app may offer a filter-like action, but it often punts you to a web flow. If the app can’t create filters cleanly, use the website method for the final rule.

  1. Open the misrouted email.
  2. Tap More (three dots).
  3. Select an option like Filter messages like these if available.
  4. If it opens a web page, complete the filter there.

Fix it on Android (Gmail app)

Android mirrors the same core logic: importance actions can train Gmail, but filters and categories are best finalized on the web.

Confirm inbox type and category behavior

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap menu (☰) → Settings.
  3. Select your account.
  4. Check for Inbox type or Inbox categories.
  5. If you only see limited options, change those on the Gmail website.

Teach Gmail and correct misclassified mail

  1. Open the message in Updates.
  2. Tap three dots (More).
  3. Choose Mark as important for messages you want to surface.

If you routinely dismiss these messages without reading, Gmail will likely keep them low priority. Reading and marking important trains the model.

Use a filter for repeat senders

When the same sender keeps landing in Updates, build a filter on the web using the sender’s address or domain. Then let the filter do the heavy lifting.

  2. Use More (three dots) → Filter messages like these.
  3. Set From and select Never send it to Spam and Always mark it as important.
  4. If available, set Category to Primary.
  5. Create filter.

When it’s tied to labels, not categories

Sometimes the message isn’t just “low priority.” It may be governed by an existing label strategy (for example, a label created by a third-party integration). A message can land in the Updates tab visually but also carry labels that affect future behavior.

Check the message header for labels (look under the sender line or sidebar label area). If a label rule is moving it, your filter needs to account for that—either override the category or adjust the rule that’s applying labels.

Sender-specific recovery playbook

Different email types behave differently. Here’s how to fix routing depending on what Gmail thinks the message is.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retail newsletters and promos

If promos are ending up in Updates and you actually want them in a separate place, keep them there—but use a label or unsubscribe cleanup. For urgent promo-related items (like shipping changes), filter by the subject phrase or sender subdomain.

Best practice: don’t mark every promo as important. Create one filter for “shipping,” “order update,” or the specific account email you care about.

Billing/receipts

Billing emails are usually consistent in sender address and subject format. Use a filter with From: @company.com plus subject keywords like Invoice, Receipt, or Paid.

Action: mark as important and prevent spam. If the UI offers category targeting, set it to Primary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Product updates and notifications

Most product update emails look like automated notifications. If they’re important to you, teach Gmail by marking a few real examples as important, then add a filter for that sender or notification stream.

  • SMART MOBILE NOTIFICATIONS - Quiet Hours, Vibrate, LED Light, Snooze and other preferences per each of your inboxes

Watch for multiple sender addresses (common with product ecosystems). If you filter only one address but they later send from noreply@ vs updates@, the new sender may revert to Updates.

Colleagues and business mail

If Gmail is misclassifying work emails from a specific person, the fastest path is a sender-based filter plus an importance training step. Mark the misrouted messages as important, then create a filter for that individual’s address.

Also check if you’ve ever used “Report spam” or “Block” for that sender—those signals can override your later preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filters vs. importance: what works best

Gmail blends multiple signals. Here’s how to choose your lever:

  • Importance markers are best when you want Gmail to learn for a class of messages (e.g., “this sender matters”).
  • Filters are best when you need deterministic behavior (e.g., “always keep these receipt emails in Primary”).
  • Category toggles are best for broad preferences (e.g., “show everything in Primary”).

Troubleshooting: what to try when emails still land in Updates

If you’ve adjusted settings and still see movement to Updates, try these in order.

1) Verify the filter is actually matching

  1. Go to Gmail → gear → See all settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses.
  2. Find your filter and confirm it uses the correct From value.
  3. If the sender uses multiple addresses, add additional filters (or a broader match like the domain).

2) Confirm the filter isn’t being overridden

If you have multiple filters, the message can match more than one. A later or more specific filter might apply a category or label you don’t expect.

  1. Review your filter list order and content.
  2. Edit or remove the conflicting filter.

3) Check for “Skip Inbox” or moving rules

A filter could be routing the message away from Inbox (for example, applying a label that is not Inbox). Make sure your filter action is consistent with your goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4) Re-train with recent real examples

Gmail models respond to patterns. After changing importance markers, give Gmail a few days with real messages so its confidence updates.

  • youtube

If the sender sends infrequently, you may need to wait or use more direct filters.

5) Avoid mixing “unsubscribe” confusion

If you unsubscribe and the sender’s email format changes, Gmail can reclassify the new stream. If you’re relying on filters, base them on stable traits like the domain or consistent subject keywords.

6) Clear spam/blocked history for that sender (only if relevant)

  1. Gmail → gear → See all settings.
  2. Check Filters and Blocked Addresses.
  3. If you see the sender there as blocked, remove it and re-try.

Common mistakes that keep undoing your changes

  • Marking one email important and never repeating: Gmail needs consistent signals.
  • Filtering by the wrong header: Many systems send from the same domain but change display name or sub-address. Prefer domain-based matching when possible.
  • Assuming tabs can be overridden for everything: If you keep Categories enabled, Gmail may still route based on its model.
  • Creating a filter but leaving actions incomplete: “Never send it to Spam” helps, but if you want Primary visibility you need the right action (importance and/or category control, where available).
  • Forgetting to save and apply: After changes, click Save Changes. If prompted, apply to existing threads when appropriate.

Comparison: fastest fix by scenario

Scenario Best fix Why
You want most mail in Primary Disable category tab behavior / switch inbox type to Default Broad setting reduces tab routing
Only one sender keeps landing in Updates Importance markers + a sender filter Deterministic routing for repeat messages
Multiple senders under one company Filter by domain (@company.com) Covers sub-address changes
You need transactional mail (receipts, security alerts) Filter with stable subject keywords + mark important Transactional content is consistent
You don’t want promos interrupting anything Leave categories on; use unsubscribe + label cleanup Reduces noise without losing important updates

FAQs

Why did my emails suddenly start going to Updates?

Gmail may have reclassified your sender based on content type, recent engagement, or changes in the sender’s sending behavior. If you’ve changed how you interact with those emails (archive/delete), that can also shift priority scoring.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will marking something as important always stop it from landing in Updates?

Not always. Importance markers can improve routing predictions, but categories and inbox rules can still move certain automated message types. For reliable control, use a filter.

How do I force Gmail to keep an email in Primary?

On the Gmail website, create a filter for the sender/domain and set actions that match Primary routing (such as “always mark as important” and category targeting if your UI offers it). If category targeting isn’t available in your interface, at minimum prevent spam and mark as important, then train with more recent messages.

Do filters apply to existing emails or only new ones?

When you create a filter, Gmail may offer an option to apply it to matching conversations. If you don’t check it, existing threads won’t change—only future emails will.

Does the Gmail app on iPhone or iPad have the same settings as the web?

Most day-to-day actions (mark important, move/unsubscribe, report spam) work the same, but category and filter management is more consistently available and controllable on the web. For complex routing, use the website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

Gmail moving “low-priority” messages into the refreshed Updates inbox is usually the result of categories and Gmail’s learned classification signals. The quickest fix is adjusting inbox/category settings; the most reliable fix is adding a sender/domain filter and then training with importance markers.

If you tell me which sender(s) and whether your inbox type is Default or Priority Inbox, I can suggest the exact filter condition (From, subject keywords, and the most effective actions to choose).
