AI Inbox helps you decide what to catch up on; an AI Overview condenses a conversation or answers a natural-language question over search results; and Gemini in Gmail responds to prompts for custom tasks such as finding details, drafting a reply, or listing action items.

AI Inbox: prioritize what to catch up on
AI Inbox reviews your inbox to identify priorities and topics, giving you a way to decide where to focus. Google’s feature table lists it for Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra, in English and in the US, on web, iOS, and Android. AI Overview: summarize an open conversation
When you open a long conversation, an AI Overview can condense its key points and replies. Google’s current table lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, with web, iOS, and Android availability for eligible Google AI or Workspace plans; it also lists availability for personal Gmail accounts. AI Overview in search: answer a question across emails
Ask a question in Gmail search using natural language, and an AI Overview may show a concise answer or summary above the search results. Short message summaries: a separate Android inbox preview
Gmail’s short message summaries are distinct from AI Inbox and thread-level AI Overviews. For eligible messages, the latest Gmail Android app can show a summary of up to two lines below the subject; Google says it is based on the thread and updates when new information arrives. What Gemini in Gmail can do beyond summarizing
Gemini is the prompt-driven assistant experience: instead of only displaying a summary in a particular place, you can ask it to perform a task. Google’s examples include summarizing a thread, finding messages, drafting or refining email, suggesting replies, and helping with certain Calendar tasks. Gmail Help and the Google Workspace Learning Center describe these capabilities.
Prompts for finding or summarizing information
- “Show my unread emails”
- “Find emails from [person] sent last week”
- “Summarize this email”
- “Catch me up on [project] emails”

Prompts for action items and writing
To turn a message into a task list, Google’s example is “Create a list of action items for me based on this email.” Gemini can also help draft or refine a message and suggest replies. For these jobs, it is an assistant you direct, rather than a summary that appears automatically in the inbox or thread. Gmail Help
Calendar help

How to tell which feature you have access to
There is no single Gmail AI requirement that applies to every feature. Google’s availability information varies by feature, account type, plan, supported language, country, and device. For example, its table lists AI Inbox for certain Google AI plans in English in the US, while conversation summaries have a different language and account listing. Gemini side-panel access has its own plan, account, and language rules. Review Google’s current feature table and Gemini access details for the particular tool you want.
Gemini in Gmail requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, according to Gmail Help. Google also notes a personal-account route through Workspace Experiments. Language support is feature-specific too. A language listed for conversation summaries or Help me write does not automatically mean the Gemini side panel or another Gmail AI feature supports it. Check the relevant feature’s row before relying on a particular language. Google’s feature overview
Do not confuse Gmail summary cards with AI summaries
Gmail also presents email-derived summary cards for items such as orders, events, travel, bills, and promotions. These cards are a separate Gmail experience, not AI Inbox, an AI Overview, or Gemini’s prompted summary. Google’s summary-card help page
Check important details against the original email
Google cautions that Gemini suggestions can be inaccurate or inappropriate and says not to rely on them as medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice.
