Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser warned on 5 October 2026 that the world’s oil-supply resilience cushion was “scarily thin.” The figures he cited concern oil inventories and supply lost during the crisis—not the amount of proven oil underground. ICIS separately reported Brent crude futures above $102 a barrel in Friday morning Asian trading amid renewed Strait of Hormuz risks, but its displayed report excerpt does not identify the exact Friday date or futures contract. That is a dated market observation, not a current quote.
What Nasser said about the oil cushion
Speaking at the Energy Intelligence Forum in London, Nasser described a system already under strain and said there was little left for the world to turn to. He put commercial inventories below six billion barrels, with most of that stock “not practically available.” He also said inventories had been almost ten billion barrels at the start of the crisis and that nearly three billion barrels of gross supply had been lost.

Those are Nasser’s estimates as reported by ICIS on 6 October, not independently verified inventory accounting. They describe a smaller buffer against disruption; they do not mean that the world has less than six billion barrels of oil remaining in the ground.

Why “oil reserves” is not the right measure here
In everyday headlines, “reserves” can sound like oil still underground. In this account, the key number is commercial inventories: oil held in the supply system, including stocks that may be difficult or impractical to put to use quickly. Proven underground reserves are a different measure, and the cited figures do not quantify them.

Commercial stocks should also not be conflated with government strategic reserves. The reporting gives no separate total for strategic reserves, nor does it say how much of those stocks could be released in response to this disruption. A large headline inventory total therefore does not necessarily equal a large amount of immediately usable supply.
What the $100 price reports do—and do not—show
ICIS reported Brent crude futures above $102 per barrel in Friday morning Asian trading amid renewed Hormuz risks. The displayed excerpt does not state the exact Friday date or identify the contract, so that figure cannot be treated as a precise timestamped price or as the market price on 7 October.

A separate ICIS report gave a more specific snapshot: at 04:42 GMT on 1 October 2026, Brent December futures were $96.93 a barrel and WTI November futures were $89.24. These are prices for named futures contracts at a stated time, not live spot prices. The snapshots show why a report that oil had moved above $100 should not be read as a permanent price level.

Futures prices reflect expectations and risks for particular delivery months. Brent and WTI are different benchmarks, and crude oil prices are not the same as retail fuel prices. The supplied market reports do not establish how much of any pump-price change was caused by the reported inventory decline or by a specific attack.

How Hormuz disruption can tighten the market
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for oil exports from the Gulf. When shipping through or near the strait is disrupted, cargoes can be delayed or put at risk. Buyers may then compete more aggressively for available supplies elsewhere, while traders price in the possibility that disruption will persist. A smaller usable inventory cushion leaves less room to absorb such delays.
That mechanism helps explain why renewed Hormuz risk can coincide with higher crude futures. It does not, by itself, prove that any single event caused a particular price move: the reports cited here do not quantify the effect of the reported attacks on production or export flows.

What is known about the reported Houthi attacks
ICIS’s 6 October account said media reports described Houthi attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities in Riyadh and Khurais. It also reported that Yemen’s Saudi-backed government announced a campaign against Houthi-held territory. The account attributes the attack claims to media reports; the material available here does not independently confirm them or establish an effect on oil output or exports.

ICIS reported that the G7 agreed on 2 October to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel over four months. It did not disclose the precise split between the two products. The report described a substantial diesel release in the first 20 days, but did not establish that the entire 100 million barrels had already been released or delivered.
A release can add supply to the market, but its timing and composition matter. Crude is not immediately interchangeable with finished diesel: crude must be processed, and refineries and transport systems affect when products reach buyers. The reported agreement is therefore a planned contribution over time, not evidence that the full volume was instantly available to replace lost supply.
