The capabilities have different release stages: some were generally available at announcement, while others were in beta, early access, or planned. GitLab’s performance, adoption, and cost figures are company-reported claims, not independent measurements.
What GitLab means by a governed software factory
GitLab describes a governed software factory as a connected system for taking software from idea to production under an organization’s policies and standards. Its October 6 announcement focuses on giving AI agents organizational context and guardrails while maintaining an evidence trail of how changes move through delivery workflows.

The announcement is a portfolio update rather than the launch of one standalone product. Its organizing idea is to connect workflows, build artifacts, package decisions, secrets, security work, and AI context so teams can apply governance across more of the software lifecycle. That is GitLab’s product direction and claim; the announcement does not independently establish that customers will achieve particular governance or delivery outcomes.

Agentic workflow orchestration
GitLab described goal-driven workflows using /goal in Duo CLI, headless mode, Duo Agentic Chat, and the GitLab for Slack app. Custom Flows and triggers are intended to automate multi-step work while using common identity, policy, and evidence tracking.

Artifact assembly and package controls
GitLab Artifact Central is positioned as a control plane for containers and packages alongside source code management and CI pipelines. GitLab says platform teams can set organization-level policy and query what has been published.
GitLab Dependency Firewall is designed to check packages against policy before they enter a build. The announcement says it can warn, block, or quarantine packages based on package age, vulnerability severity, malicious-package detection, and license compliance. These controls address different questions: whether a package is acceptable under policy, whether known risks are present, and whether it should be allowed into a build.
Secrets management
GitLab Secrets Manager centralizes build-time secrets, scopes each secret to the job that needs it, uses existing group and project permissions, and records events in the GitLab audit trail. The announcement presents this as a way to manage credentials within delivery workflows without maintaining separate integration points for each secret store.

Security guidance and remediation
GitLab Security Standard defines five controls for what the company calls the agentic era and uses time from detection to verified remediation as its core metric. The October 6 announcement does not enumerate the five controls, so it is not possible to assess their individual requirements from that announcement alone.

GitLab also said new Duo Agent Platform security flows using Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5 and 5.1 would be available the following month in approved environments. Anthropic’s Head of Applied AI, Rajat Pandit, said: “When defenders have more context than attackers, advanced models change the math in their favor,” and that GitLab customers would be able to use the models “to find vulnerabilities and verify fixes inside the workflows they already run.” These are statements in GitLab’s announcement, not an independent evaluation of the models or security outcomes.
AI context, impact, and usage controls
GitLab Orbit supplies software-lifecycle context for agents. Duo Agent Platform Impact Analytics is described as reporting AI cost and impact by team, task, and model. The release also mentions AI usage caps and controls, but does not provide a full description of their settings or measurement methodology.

Availability stated on October 6, 2026
The following statuses reflect GitLab’s announcement on October 6, 2026, not a guarantee of availability now. Planned timing is not confirmation that a release occurred; verify current product documentation and customer eligibility before making a procurement or rollout decision. GitLab did not provide a complete feature-by-feature matrix by subscription tier, geography, or customer eligibility.

How to interpret GitLab’s reported figures
All figures below come from GitLab’s October 6, 2026 announcement. They should be read as company-reported data and claims: the release does not provide independent validation or enough methodology to generalize them to every organization or workload.
Best Value
- GitLab reported that more than 3,500 organizations had used Orbit and coding agents had made over 280,000 queries since Orbit’s beta announcement in June 2026.
- For tasks using Orbit, GitLab reported up to 45 times fewer retries and 4.5 times fewer tokens. The announcement does not specify the comparison baseline or task mix.
- GitLab said more than 70 million developers and over 10,000 enterprises use its platform.
- For the prior three months year over year, GitLab reported 200% growth in active users of agentic software development, 100% growth in secure repositories, 80% growth in user namespaces, and 40% growth in CI/CD pipelines.
- GitLab claimed Artifact Central can deliver up to 50% lower total cost of ownership than alternative tooling and Secrets Manager can save up to 50% compared with hosting a separate vault. The release did not state the calculation or define the comparators.
What teams should assess before adopting the capabilities
The announcement describes GitLab’s approach, but it is not a neutral comparison with other platforms. A team evaluating fit should test the operational details that affect its own delivery model:
- Availability and eligibility: confirm the required deployment option, release stage, subscription tier, region, and customer approval conditions for each capability.
- Policy coverage: establish where policy is enforced across source, build, and registry stages, and what happens when a package is warned on, blocked, or quarantined.
- Evidence and access: check how package provenance, approvals, job-scoped secrets, permissions, and audit events are represented and retained in the workflows the organization actually uses.
- AI governance: determine which models and flows are available, how usage caps work, and whether the cost and impact reporting supports the organization’s oversight needs.
- Claims and economics: ask how productivity and cost figures are calculated, identify the baseline and included costs, and compare them with results from the organization’s own workloads.
GitLab chief product and marketing officer Manav Khurana summarized the product framing this way: “GitLab brings together the foundational building blocks for a governed software factory, connecting agentic workflows, security, and AI context and controls so organizations can move software from intent to production with greater speed, governance, and visibility.” The release supports that as GitLab’s stated ambition; validating speed, governance, visibility, or savings requires evidence beyond the announcement.
