To apply for the Student Developer Pack, use a personal GitHub account and submit clear proof that you are currently enrolled in an eligible degree- or diploma-granting program. GitHub says applicants must also be at least 13. GitHub’s student application guide describes the evidence and application steps.
What GitHub Education checks
GitHub’s published student criteria focus on whether you are currently enrolled, whether your evidence demonstrates that status, and whether you meet the account and age requirements. The guide does not list commits, repositories, a contribution graph, or other engineering activity as application requirements. Treating visible coding activity as a prerequisite misstates the published process.

Eligibility for the Student Developer Pack is limited to students enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting program. GitHub’s Pack page says teachers, researchers, faculty, staff, and other educational users are not eligible for the Pack, although they may be able to apply for other GitHub Education access. Check the current eligibility wording on GitHub Education’s student eligibility page.
What documents can prove current enrollment?
GitHub lists several possible forms of evidence. The best choice is the one that clearly connects you to your school and shows that your enrollment is current.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
| Evidence option | What to check before submitting |
|---|---|
| School ID | It should show a current enrollment date and identify you and the school. |
| Class schedule | Make sure it visibly supports current enrollment and identifies the school. |
| Transcript | Use a document that makes your current student status clear. |
| Affiliation or enrollment verification letter | It should identify you, the school, and your current enrollment; an official letter is useful when other evidence is unavailable. |
GitHub’s application and troubleshooting guidance emphasizes legibility and details that establish current status. Where the document includes a date, ensure it is visible. See the application guide and the troubleshooting guide for the current instructions.
Do you need a school email address?
Not necessarily. GitHub says its verification process is individually tailored, so email requirements can vary by school. If the application requires an academic email, add it to your GitHub account and verify it before applying.

If your school does not issue academic email addresses, GitHub says to provide official documentation explaining that policy, such as a school webpage or a letter on school letterhead. If GitHub does not recognize your school’s email domain, contact Education Support with the full school name, the school website URL, and the email domain you are using. The detailed instructions are in GitHub’s application guide.

Why an application may need more evidence
GitHub’s troubleshooting guidance identifies evidence quality and account details as common issues to address. Before submitting or reapplying, check for:
- A blurry, cropped, or otherwise unreadable document.
- No visible date or insufficient detail to establish current enrollment.
- An academic email address that has not been verified on your GitHub account.
- A school email domain GitHub does not recognize, or a domain with lax issuance policies that may require additional evidence.
- An academic email already associated with another Student Developer Pack account.
GitHub says an academic email used previously for a different Pack account cannot simply be reused for another one. Its guidance recommends merging personal accounts rather than keeping duplicates. Use GitHub’s access troubleshooting instructions for the relevant account or evidence issue.

What happens after approval—and when verification expires
GitHub says student validation lasts two years. If you remain eligible, you can reapply, but approval does not guarantee that every partner benefit can be renewed. Individual partner offers have their own terms, which may differ or change; check the current conditions in GitHub’s Student Developer Pack terms and the current benefits catalog.
