GitHub Code Review Shortcuts for a Faster, More Focused Review

Use GitHub’s page-specific shortcuts to navigate pull request diffs, filter changed files, add precise comments, and keep a thorough review on track.

GitHub’s built-in shortcuts can reduce navigation during a pull request review, especially when you need to filter a long file list, inspect a particular commit, or add a review comment. Shortcuts vary by page, so start by pressing ? to see what works in your current view. These actions are useful tools, not a measured guarantee of time saved.

GitHub pull request review shortcuts

GitHub Docs says that typing ? opens a dialog listing shortcuts available on the current page. That context matters: a shortcut shown for comments may not perform the same action from the Files changed tab. See GitHub’s keyboard shortcuts reference for the current mappings.

Where you are Shortcut What it does
Any GitHub page ? Opens the shortcut list for the current page.
Repository navigation G, then P Opens the repository’s Pull requests tab. Press the keys in sequence, not together.
Issues and pull requests Q Requests a reviewer.
Pull request, Files changed T Moves focus to the Filter changed files field.
Pull request, Files changed C Opens the Commits dropdown, which filters the commits shown in the diffs.
Pull request, Files changed Command+Shift+Enter on Mac; Ctrl+Shift+Enter on Windows/Linux Submits a review comment from the Files changed view.
Comments Command+Enter on Mac; Ctrl+Enter on Windows/Linux Submits a comment. This is listed for the Comments context, not as the Files changed review-comment shortcut.
Comments Command+G on Mac; Ctrl+G on Windows/Linux Inserts a suggestion for an exact edit.

If character-key shortcuts are disruptive, GitHub’s accessibility settings let you disable them while retaining modifier-key shortcuts. Check the shortcut dialog and settings in your account because mappings and controls may change.

Use shortcuts as part of a deliberate review

Navigation keys help you move through a pull request; they do not replace understanding its purpose or checking the changes. GitHub’s review quickstart and guidance on giving reviews support a repeatable approach:

  1. Read the summary and discussion. Establish what the change is intended to do and note relevant context before judging individual lines.
  2. Open Files changed and narrow the view if needed. Press T to focus the changed-file filter, or press C to choose a commit and filter the diffs shown.
  3. Review one file at a time. For a large or complex diff, GitHub recommends working file by file. Mark a file Viewed when you have reviewed it; the progress bar helps you track coverage.
  4. Leave specific feedback. Add comments where an explanation or question is needed. For a precise replacement, use a suggestion block so the author can apply the proposed edit directly.
  5. Check beyond the diff. Dependency review and code scanning provide checks beyond reading changed lines. Consider their results alongside your review.
  6. Submit a clear decision. A review can be submitted as Comment, Approve, or Request changes. Pending comments are visible only to you until you submit the review.

For additional review options and guidance, see GitHub’s Review pull requests documentation.

What Copilot code review can—and cannot—do

GitHub Copilot code review is an optional aid: it can leave comments and suggest changes, but its default review decision is Comment, not Approve or Request changes. A human reviewer still needs to assess the feedback and submit the appropriate decision. See Using GitHub Copilot code review on GitHub.

GitHub says new pushes are not automatically re-reviewed unless automatic review for new pushes is configured. A re-review can repeat earlier comments, including ones previously resolved or downvoted. Automatic review of your own pull requests is documented as available for Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Max plans and for users with a Copilot Business or Enterprise license, subject to account limitations. Controls and plan availability can change; consult GitHub’s Copilot code review configuration guide for current details.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
