The GitGuardian Mixin Kit adds ggshield secret scanning and supported coding-assistant hooks to a Docker Sandbox. Docker’s sandbox controls where an agent can run and what files or network destinations it can reach; the mixin adds checks at selected points in the agent workflow. These are complementary controls, not a guarantee that every secret or disclosure path will be caught.
What the Mixin Kit adds to a Docker Sandbox
The kit is an integration, not a replacement for Docker Sandbox isolation. It installs GitGuardian’s ggshield CLI and configures hooks for supported AI coding assistants. Those hooks scan selected workflow inputs and outputs for exposed secrets, while the sandbox governs the environment in which the assistant operates.

Docker’s workspace scoping and network policy can limit the files and connections available to an agent. The kit adds secret-detection checkpoints within certain assistant workflows. A sandbox can constrain access without identifying every sensitive value, and a scanner can detect some exposed secrets without controlling every way an agent can access or transmit data.
How the hooks check an agent’s workflow
GitGuardian describes three hook events: prompt submission, before a tool is used, and after a tool returns output. What happens depends on the event:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prompt submission: a detected secret can cause a prompt to be blocked before it reaches the model.
- Before tool use: a check can block an action when a secret is found.
- After tool use: returned output is scanned, with a notification if a secret appears.
These checkpoints can catch exposures in the covered inputs, actions, and outputs. They do not establish that every assistant event, secret type, or possible route for disclosure is covered. Hook support also depends on the assistant and the installed ggshield release.
Which coding assistants are supported
The Docker Hub listing for the kit names hook files for Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor. It says the pinned ggshield 1.53.0 release supports hooks for those assistants and VS Code. The same listing says Gemini, Droid, Kiro, and OpenCode do not have automatic AI hooks in that release; the ggshield CLI can still be used for manual scanning. Treat this as release-specific coverage, not a permanent compatibility promise. Check the live kit listing for current hook files and release support.

How the GitGuardian API key is handled
The kit’s Docker Hub description says the GitGuardian API key is stored on the host and bound to requests to api.gitguardian.com through Docker’s proxy. The sandbox sees a placeholder rather than the key’s real value; the proxy injects the real key into requests on the wire. This design is intended to keep the credential value host-side rather than exposing it inside the sandbox.

That credential boundary is specific to the GitGuardian API key flow described by the kit. It does not mean the sandbox has no access to other credentials or sensitive data; those depend on what a user or host configuration makes available.

How to set up the kit—and avoid a version mismatch
- Check the kit format and workload version. Docker’s kit documentation distinguishes v2 and v3. Built-in shortcuts such as
claudeandcodexuse v2 kits and require v2 mixins; a v3 kit must be paired with a v3 workload. Confirm the current format before choosing the assistant shortcut and kit. - Store the GitGuardian API key as a sandbox secret. The vendor’s setup sequence uses
sbx secret set gitguardian; supply the key when prompted, following the current CLI flow. - Launch the assistant with the kit. The Docker Hub listing gives
sbx run <agent> --kit gitguardian/ggshield-kit:latestas a basic invocation. It also advises pinning the kit by digest. Thelatesttag is illustrative, not a reproducible production pin; use the digest published for the version you intend to run. - Verify the effective network policy. The kit adds its required egress hosts to the host sandbox policy; it does not narrow that policy or make it deny-by-default. If the kit’s hosts should be the complete allowlist, initialize a deny-all policy first, then add the required hosts.
For exact current commands and kit behavior, consult the Docker Hub listing and Docker’s kit usage documentation. The vendor’s setup article describes selecting the assistant’s mixin, binding the key, and launching with the kit.
When to use the sandbox integration versus direct hooks
GitGuardian says its AI hooks can also be installed directly in supported coding tools without Docker Sandboxes. The choice depends on which control you need:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Choose the sandbox integration when you want the assistant to run inside Docker’s isolated environment and also want the kit’s supported secret-scanning hooks.
- Consider direct hooks when you want supported-agent secret checks but are not adopting Docker Sandboxes. Direct hooks do not, by themselves, provide Docker Sandbox isolation.
- Use manual CLI scanning where automatic hooks are unavailable if your assistant is not covered by the cited release. Manual scanning is a different workflow and does not provide the same automatic event checkpoints.
What the early-access figures do—and do not—show
In its September 24, 2026 article, GitGuardian reported an average of roughly 150 secrets per developer endpoint in its early-access program. It also reported that around 40% of the high- and critical-severity secrets discovered in that same early-access context appeared in AI tool directories and log files. These are GitGuardian-reported figures from that program; the article does not provide the underlying methodology in its discussion, so they should not be treated as population-wide estimates for all developers.
