Gitea stores and schedules the workflow; the runner executes it. Building and archiving are separate from signing and distributing, so plan the Apple release steps as a distinct part of the pipeline.
What you need before creating a workflow
- A compatible Gitea instance: Gitea’s Quick Start requires version 1.19.0 or later. Actions are enabled by default starting with Gitea 1.21.0, but repository-level Actions must also be enabled in that repository’s settings. See the Gitea Actions Quick Start.
- A registered runner: Actions does not execute jobs by itself. Install and register a Gitea Runner, then keep it running so it can accept jobs. Gitea recommends running the runner separately from the Gitea instance to avoid resource contention. See Gitea Runner.
- A Mac with the required toolchain: Xcode-based builds need a macOS environment where the project’s required Xcode is installed. Confirm that the macOS and Xcode versions work together for your project before preparing a runner; Apple’s current upload requirements can also affect which Xcode version you should pin.
- An Apple distribution route: Decide whether the build is for registered-device testing, TestFlight, or App Store distribution. Each route has its own signing, provisioning, and account requirements.
Gitea documents host and container runner modes, but a generic Linux container does not provide Apple’s Xcode toolchain. For a straightforward Xcode build, use a macOS runner host and ensure the workflow’s runner label matches the label configured during runner registration. Gitea’s Act Runner documentation includes a macOS LaunchDaemon example. Choose the runner’s isolation and access model according to who can submit workflow code and which secrets that code could read; Gitea advises using only trusted runners and making them available only to trusted repositories.

Set up Gitea Actions and a macOS runner
- Check the Gitea version and enable Actions. Confirm the instance meets the Quick Start’s 1.19.0 minimum. If Actions are not enabled at the instance level, enable them in the instance configuration, then enable Actions in the repository settings. The exact configuration process can vary by installation.
- Install and register the runner. Register it at the scope appropriate to your repository and keep it running as a service. Use a macOS host with the required Xcode installed; Gitea’s runner guidance covers runner setup and service operation.
- Match the workflow label to the runner. Create a workflow file under
.gitea/workflows/. Setruns-onto the label configured for the macOS runner. A label mismatch means the job will not select that runner. - Choose workflow triggers and permissions. Start with the events your team needs, such as pushes or pull requests, and avoid exposing release secrets to jobs that do not need them. Keep untrusted contribution workflows separate from release jobs if those contributions could run code on a runner with sensitive access.
Build, test, and archive the app
A useful pipeline treats compilation, testing, archiving, and distribution as distinct stages. The build job should use the intended scheme and destination, run the project’s tests, and create an Xcode archive. An archive is a build output—not proof that the app is signed for a particular audience or accepted by App Store Connect.
- Check out the repository and select the project’s intended Xcode scheme and destination.
- Run the tests and build steps appropriate to the project.
- Create an archive using Xcode’s archive process. Apple describes archiving as the precursor to distribution in its Xcode distribution guidance.
- Save the archive and relevant logs as workflow outputs. Gitea supports workflow artifacts, which let later jobs retrieve build outputs without rebuilding.
- Pass the archive to a separate release job when distribution is required, and grant that job only the signing credentials and account permissions it needs.
The exact build command, scheme, destination, and export settings depend on the project, so they should be explicit in the workflow rather than assumed. Keep the Xcode version intentional: App Store Connect’s upload requirements change, and Apple’s build upload guidance is the place to confirm current accepted versions before pinning a release toolchain.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Choose a distribution path
| Goal | What the pipeline must do | Key Apple requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Test on registered devices | Sign and export a build for the intended devices. | Apple requires an app ID and appropriate signing and provisioning setup; provisioning profiles determine which devices are eligible. See Apple’s registered-device distribution guidance. |
| Beta testing through TestFlight | Prepare the archive for distribution and upload the build to App Store Connect. | Use the team’s App Store Connect access and signing setup. See Apple’s beta testing and release guidance. |
| App Store submission | Prepare and upload the archive through the Xcode/App Store Connect distribution flow. | Confirm current App Store Connect upload requirements and accepted Xcode versions in Apple’s Upload builds documentation. |
For registered-device distribution, Apple documents a distribution certificate for iOS-family platforms along with provisioning profiles that define eligible devices. For TestFlight and App Store delivery, the release flow goes through App Store Connect. In either case, a successful compile or archive alone does not establish that signing, provisioning, or upload validation will succeed.
Decide how signing and secrets are handled
Xcode’s automatic signing and a manually managed signing setup are alternative ways to handle signing configuration; the right choice depends on the project and team’s release process. Whichever you use, isolate the credentials and permissions required for distribution from ordinary build and test jobs whenever possible. A workflow running on a persistent host can potentially access resources available to that host, so runner trust, repository access, and secret scope belong in the release design—not just in the YAML file.

- Keep build artifacts and logs available for diagnosing failures, while avoiding accidental inclusion of signing credentials in artifacts or logs.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The workflow is not running
Check that Actions are enabled for both the instance and repository, that the runner is registered and online, and that the workflow file is in .gitea/workflows/. Confirm that the job’s runs-on value matches a label configured on the runner.

The job starts but Xcode is unavailable
Verify that the selected runner is actually a macOS host with the required Xcode installed. Do not assume a Linux-based container can run Apple’s Xcode toolchain. Check the project’s Xcode and macOS compatibility before changing the workflow.

The app builds but distribution fails
Separate build success from release readiness. Check the selected distribution path, signing certificate, provisioning profile, app ID, and—when uploading—App Store Connect access and current accepted Xcode requirements. Consult Apple’s documentation for the specific destination rather than treating an archive as a completed release.
