Git can carry committed project files and instructions to another machine, but the official documentation reviewed here does not describe Git as a way to transfer complete Claude Code or Codex conversations. Keep durable context in versioned project files, then use each product’s own conversation features for continuity.
Does Git sync a coding-agent conversation?
Not according to the product documentation cited here. A Git commit can preserve files such as source code, AGENTS.md, and project notes. Cloning or pulling those files gives another working tree the same committed project context; it does not, on the evidence available, restore the original agent transcript, thread state, or session identifier.

That distinction matters because project context and conversation history are different kinds of state. Anthropic documents Claude Code commands to continue or resume a conversation. OpenAI’s Codex project guidance says a conversation retains its history and saved working directory while Codex reads files from the current working tree. Neither cited page describes Git as transferring the complete conversation between machines. (Anthropic CLI reference; OpenAI Codex project guidance)
What can move with the repository?
Commit durable context that should be available to anyone working from the project: setup steps, architecture notes, conventions, and instructions for the agent. Codex guidance specifically recommends AGENTS.md or versioned documentation for persistent project instructions. Once committed, these files can travel with the repository and be read from the working tree on another machine.
#1 Best Overall
- Repository context: source files, project documentation, and committed instructions are shared through the normal Git workflow.
- Claude Code conversation: the documented CLI offers conversation continuation and resumption controls; the cited reference does not say Git carries the conversation.
- Codex conversation: its history and saved working directory belong to the conversation, while the files Codex reads come from the current working tree.
- Codex Goal: OpenAI describes Goals as persisted thread state, not global memory or project-level instructions. Do not treat a Goal as a substitute for a committed project file. (OpenAI Codex Goals guide)
A practical workflow for using the project on another machine
- Write down durable context. Put project-specific directions in
AGENTS.mdor versioned documentation, and commit the files that should accompany the project. Avoid putting credentials, tokens, private transcripts, or local configuration into Git unless you have verified the product’s handling and deliberately reviewed the security implications. - Update the repository on the destination machine. Check out or pull the relevant branch, then open the project from that working tree. Codex’s project guidance ties the conversation to a saved working directory and says it reads files from the current working tree; having the right repository available makes that project context accessible.
- Use the product’s conversation controls separately. For Claude Code, run
claude -c(orclaude --continue) to continue the most recent conversation, orclaude -r "<session-id>"(orclaude --resume "<session-id>") to resume by session ID. The CLI reference also shows a query form, claude -r "<session-id>" "query". These are documented resume controls, not Git commands. (Anthropic CLI reference) - For Codex, reopen the relevant conversation in the product. The cited project guidance describes conversation history and the saved working directory, but does not provide a Git-based transcript transfer procedure. Keep project instructions in files so they remain available independently of a particular thread.
What the documentation does—and does not—establish
The cited documentation supports sharing committed project context and using product-level conversation controls. It does not provide a cross-device export/import recipe for complete Claude Code or Codex transcripts, specify local history storage locations, or guarantee that a session ID remains usable after moving to another machine. That is a limit of the cited documentation, not proof that no product can ever offer another history-transfer method.
OpenAI’s Agents API reference separately documents operations for API sessions and their artifacts. It does not establish that those API session objects are interchangeable with conversation state in the Codex CLI or app, so an API session should not be assumed to solve this workflow.
