Git Brain Brings Visual Git Workflows Into VS Code

Git Brain aims to bring Git graphs, history, worktrees, conflict tools, and AI-assisted workflows into VS Code-compatible editors. Here’s what its creators say it does and what the available evidence does not establish.

Git Brain is an in-editor Git extension intended to bring graph, history, branch, worktree, and merge-conflict workflows into VS Code-compatible editors. Its co-creator says he built it after repeatedly leaving the editor to inspect branches, resolve conflicts, and reconstruct what had happened. The capabilities and compatibility below are described by the author or product site, not independently tested.

Why Git Brain was built

In his article, co-creator Ariel Livshits describes a familiar sequence in his own work: switch to a terminal, check a graph elsewhere, resolve a conflict in another view, open a separate history tool, then piece together what happened to a branch. His goal was to make those connected Git tasks available in one visual workspace inside the editor.

Livshits sums up the idea as: “Put the everyday Git workflow into one visual workspace and make it hard to shoot yourself in the foot.” The quote appears in an article page marked “Posted on Sep 13”; the page does not show a year.

Git Brain is presented as an IDE extension, rather than a standalone desktop Git client. The motivation is the co-creator’s account, not a claim that all VS Code users share the same workflow problem. Read the author’s article on DEV Community.

What Git Brain says it includes

The co-creator describes a set of Git tools organized around a visual workflow:

  • Commit graph: A view combining branches, merges, and tags, with filters, commit details, and file diffs.
  • History and diffs: Commit and file history alongside changes for reviewing how code evolved.
  • Branch and stash management: Controls for common branch and stash tasks.
  • Worktrees: Controls to create, inspect, open, and remove worktrees, which let developers work with multiple branches in separate working directories.
  • Three-way conflict resolution: A “Local | Result | Remote” view for examining both sides of a conflict, choosing either or both changes, editing the result, and moving between conflicts.

The official site also lists cherry-picking, reverting, stashing, checking out branches, and switching branches. These are author and vendor descriptions; the inspected sources do not provide independent feature testing. See the Git Brain product site.

How the described AI features fit into the workflow

Livshits says Git Brain can use AI to propose logical commits from a large working tree, generate commit messages, summarize changes, draft pull-request descriptions, and help resolve conflicts. These features are presented as ways to turn a set of changes into reviewable Git work, rather than as proof that generated suggestions are correct.

The article also describes a built-in Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that gives compatible agents structured Git context and exposes Git capabilities. The author says it has guardrails around mutations and destructive actions; the product site calls the server local and says it provides deterministic Git history context. Neither description amounts to an independent security review, so teams should evaluate the extension and agent access against their own repository policies.

Which editors are listed as compatible?

The co-creator names VS Code, Cursor, Antigravity, Trae, Kiro, Windsurf, and VSCodium. The product site additionally lists Firebase Studio, CodeBuddy, Theia IDE, and some regional editor variants. Compatibility is vendor-stated and may depend on the editor variant or environment; the inspected sources do not independently verify each combination.

What adoption and comparison claims are supported?

Livshits reports more than 70,000 Open VSX downloads. The article page does not show a year for that figure, so it should be understood as an author-reported number without a verifiable date, not a current download count or independently validated statistic.

The author calls Git Brain a GitLens alternative for VS Code, but the available sources do not establish a rigorous side-by-side comparison. They do not substantiate GitLens feature details, nor do they establish Git Brain pricing, licensing, independent usability results, performance measurements, or a security assessment. A meaningful comparison would need to check the same editor and repository workflows across graph and history views, conflict handling, worktrees, AI features, MCP support, price, and licensing.

Who may find the idea relevant?

Git Brain’s described approach may interest developers who want to inspect Git history, manage branches and worktrees, or handle conflicts without moving among separate tools. Its agent-related features may also be relevant to people using compatible coding agents. Whether it improves a particular workflow depends on the editor, repository practices, and how much control a developer wants over AI-generated changes.
