Discord’s published free upload limit is 20 MB as of August 2026, but Discord says account-level experiments can make the limit shown to you different. If a GIF is too large, reduce its dimensions, frame count, or color palette, then check the exported file size before uploading. This article explains those trade-offs and the browser-based compressor described in the headline; its implementation and privacy behavior have not been independently verified.
What Discord’s upload limit means for GIFs
Discord supports GIF uploads. You can select a file or drag it into the browser or desktop app. Its File Attachments FAQ, updated August 13, 2026, says the free upload limit is 20 MB, up from 10 MB. Nitro Basic offers 50 MB, and Nitro offers uploads up to 1 GB. Discord also says it is experimenting with upload limits, so the limit on your account may differ. Discord’s developer documentation describes a default limit of 20 MiB per file and notes that account Nitro status or server boost tier may raise it. MB and MiB are different units, so the figures should not be treated as identical. The developer reference also lists GIF as a supported image format. Why compress before uploading
Discord says it checks file size before compression on both desktop and mobile. That means you should not rely on Discord’s client-side processing to make an oversized source acceptable. Compress or edit the GIF first, export it, and confirm the resulting file’s actual size.

Older instructions may still cite a 10 MB free limit. Discord’s June 2026 upload guide includes that older figure, while the newer August 2026 FAQ publishes 20 MB and notes that limits are experimental. Use the FAQ for the current published limit and the upload guide for the basic selection or drag-and-drop workflow.
How to reduce a GIF’s file size
GIF size depends in part on how many pixels and frames it contains and how many colors are used. Common editing controls address those factors, but reducing any of them can change how the animation looks or feels. Make a change, export a preview, and inspect both playback and file size rather than expecting a fixed reduction ratio.
Resize the image
Reducing width and height lowers the number of pixels stored across the animation. This is often a useful first adjustment if the GIF is much larger than it needs to be for the place you plan to share it. Check that text, faces, or other important details remain legible at the new dimensions.

Use fewer frames
Removing frames can reduce the amount of animation data, but may make movement look less smooth. If the editor offers frame reduction or trimming, preview the full loop and check that important motion is still clear.
Reduce the color palette
A smaller palette can reduce color detail. Gradients, subtle shading, and complex images may show banding or other visible changes, so compare the exported GIF with the original before sharing.
A separate GIF editing project documents resizing, frame reduction, palette changes, trimming, and speed adjustment as controls; those are examples of common editing options, not confirmed features of the compressor described here. What “100% in your browser” does—and does not—establish
The headline describes a browser-based compressor, but no project link or source code is available here to verify how it processes files. The title alone does not establish that a file stays on your device, which browsers are supported, how fast compression is, or what output quality to expect. Before using any browser tool with a sensitive GIF, look for a clear explanation of whether processing happens locally and whether files are sent to a server.

Open the GIF in your chosen editor or compressor and make a modest change to its dimensions, frame count, or palette.

Export the GIF, then check the saved file’s size and play it back to inspect motion, timing, and image detail.

If it remains above the limit shown for your Discord account, make another adjustment and export again. There is no guaranteed reduction ratio across different GIFs.

In Discord’s browser or desktop app, select the file or drag it into the conversation. If Discord rejects it, check the limit shown for your account rather than assuming the published free-tier figure applies to every account.

GIF versus animated WebP
Discord’s developer documentation cautions that animated WebP or AVIF do not convert cleanly to GIF and recommends requesting animated images as WebP for maximum compatibility in the documented contexts. That is technical guidance for those contexts, not a reason to assume a GIF compressor can convert formats or that animated WebP will work as a drop-in replacement for every sharing need.
