They are huge ripples in plasma at the boundary between the solar wind and Mars’s upper atmosphere. A 2026 study linked these Kelvin–Helmholtz waves to clouds of escaping atmospheric ions, but it has not established how much they contribute to the planet’s total atmospheric loss.
What are the giant waves on Mars?
They are Kelvin–Helmholtz waves: ripples that form where two flows move past each other at different speeds. On Mars, the faster solar wind streams past slower, heavier ions near the upper-atmosphere boundary. The speed difference can make that boundary ripple and curl, producing waves in plasma—the electrically charged particles in the region.

A wind-over-water analogy can help explain the shear: moving air can disturb the surface of slower water. But Mars’s waves are not on a liquid surface. They are structures in charged particles, and a telescope cannot reveal them as visible surface features.

The study, led by Boston University researcher Chi Zhang, combined observations from NASA’s MAVEN orbiter and China’s Tianwen-1 orbiter. Their different vantage points helped address a limitation of measurements made by a single spacecraft: Tianwen-1 measured the incoming solar wind upstream of Mars, while MAVEN measured ions escaping closer to the planet. Boston University’s study summary, published by ScienceDaily on August 3, 2026, identifies the paper as “Simultaneous Mars-orbit observations reveal Kelvin-Helmholtz instability–driven bulk atmospheric ion escape,” published in Science Advances in 2026 (DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aed9072).

Earth.com’s 2026 account reports that the team identified 62 plasma-cloud events between December 2021 and December 2023. Of those, 46 occurred in trains and 16 were isolated. The report says all 62 were observed on the side of Mars where the solar-wind electric field pointed toward the planet; none appeared on the opposite side. These are counts as reported by Earth.com, not a claim that such events occur at a fixed rate under all conditions. Earth.com’s report provides the event counts and their stated orientation.
How large were the waves, and how strong was the escape?
Earth.com reports that one observed wave train had an estimated crest-to-crest spacing of about 5,400 miles (8,750 kilometers)—longer than Mars’s roughly 4,200-mile (6,780-kilometer) diameter. That is an estimate for one train, not a typical or universal size for these waves.

The same report says ion escape inside the observed clouds was 10 to 100 times stronger than in either of two steady escape channels. This comparison concerns the measured escape in and around those clouds versus those channels; it does not mean the waves increase Mars’s total atmospheric loss by that amount. The available account does not provide the journal paper’s detailed methods or uncertainty estimates, so the figures are best read as reported study results rather than independently verified measurements.

No—not on the evidence reported so far. The observations connect Kelvin–Helmholtz waves with enhanced ion escape, but they do not quantify what fraction of Mars’s total atmospheric loss this process accounts for, either today or over the planet’s history. Earth.com notes that estimates depend on the clouds’ geometry and that their lifetimes remain unknown. A large local or short-lived escape rate is not, by itself, a measure of the planet-wide loss over geological time.

Boston University research scientist Chi Zhang said, “Future research will focus on identifying the conditions that favor the formation and growth of Kelvin-Helmholtz waves and determining how much they contribute to atmospheric escape from Mars.” The central open questions are which conditions produce and strengthen the waves, and how often and how long the resulting clouds persist.

NASA says MAVEN lost contact on December 6, 2025, and declared the mission ended on June 3, 2026, after more than 11 years in Mars orbit. NASA’s MAVEN mission page gives the mission status. Boston University’s summary points to NASA’s ESCAPADE mission as a future opportunity to study solar-wind-driven atmospheric loss, but does not establish its operational status or a specific observation schedule. Continued measurements will be important for testing how widely the newly reported process operates.
