Ghost Recon Games in Order: From Tactical Shooters to Open Worlds

A release-order guide to the principal Ghost Recon games, with the series’ shift from tactical-shooter roots to the open-world format introduced by Wildlands.

For the principal Ghost Recon releases, play in release order: start with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon (2001), continue through the early expansions and Ghost Recon 2 era, then move to Advanced Warfighter (2006), Future Soldier (2012), Wildlands (2017) and Breakpoint (2019). The biggest change came with Wildlands, which Ubisoft described as the franchise’s first open-world title. The series’ tactical-shooter identity did not disappear; the later games changed the scale and structure of the battlefield.

Ghost Recon games in release order

This is a guide to the principal releases and selected milestones, not a complete catalog of every expansion, platform-specific version or side entry. Ubisoft’s 2009 corporate reference names several early releases and milestones, while platform versions can have distinct schedules and differences not covered here.

  1. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon (2001). The series began with an elite Green Beret team operating in an Eastern European conflict. Ubisoft’s PC page lists November 13, 2001 as its release date. The company later described the game as moving combat away from tense indoor encounters toward outdoor war zones. Ubisoft’s original game page and Ubisoft’s retrospective provide that history.
  2. Early expansions and the Ghost Recon 2 era (2002–2005). Selected milestones in Ubisoft’s corporate reference include Island Thunder (2002) and Summit Strike (2005). They belong to the franchise’s pre-open-world period, when its focus remained on tactical military combat. These dates identify notable entries, not every expansion or port. Ubisoft’s 2009 reference document records these milestones.
  3. Advanced Warfighter era (from 2006). Advanced Warfighter is another key pre-open-world milestone, between the earlier games and later installments. Ubisoft’s reference identifies 2006 as its release year; separate platform release schedules and design differences are not established here.
  4. Ghost Recon Future Soldier (2012). This is a later pre-open-world mainline installment. Ubisoft describes its setting as near-future and highlights advanced combat technology and weapons. See Ubisoft’s Future Soldier page.
  5. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands (2017). This is the structural turning point: Ubisoft’s June 15, 2015 announcement called it the franchise’s first open-world title. The announcement describes a Bolivia setting and a four-player Ghost team, and names Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC versions. Ubisoft’s US store lists the standard edition’s release date as March 7, 2017. Read Ubisoft’s announcement and check the Ubisoft US store listing for current listing details. If you are choosing a copy, confirm its platform, edition and format before buying.
  6. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint (2019). Breakpoint continues the open-world direction. Ubisoft groups it with Wildlands as part of the franchise’s open-world era; its US store lists the standard edition’s release date as October 4, 2019. See Ubisoft’s franchise page and the Ubisoft US store listing.

What changed when Ghost Recon went open world?

From mission-centered combat to a broad, explorable world

The distinction is primarily one of scale and structure. Earlier games reflect the series’ mission-centered tactical-shooter heritage; Wildlands introduced an open-world format, and Breakpoint continued it. Ubisoft’s franchise page describes the latter pair as featuring vast open worlds and varied environments. Announcing Wildlands on June 15, 2015, Ubisoft Senior Producer Nouredine Abboud said: “With Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, we’re moving the Ghost Recon franchise in a new direction, with a massive, beautiful and living open world that reacts to players’ choices.” That was the announcement; the standard edition’s listed release followed on March 7, 2017.

Tactics remain part of the series’ identity

Open-world scale is not the same as abandoning tactical play. Ubisoft still characterizes Ghost Recon as a tactical-shooter series. The useful description is a shift in world and mission structure, rather than a clean break from the franchise’s tactical identity. When comparing entries, consider map scale and mission structure alongside tactical pace, squad control, setting and release era; those are comparison lenses, not a measured ranking.
