GHO, DAI and USDC all target a value of one U.S. dollar, but they get there in different ways. GHO and DAI are generated through collateralized protocols whose rules are governed on-chain; USDC is issued by Circle affiliates and is redeemable directly from Circle by eligible customers. Those designs create different dependencies—and none makes a dollar peg an assurance that every market trade will be exactly $1.
How GHO, DAI and USDC differ
| Stablecoin | Issuance and backing | Who sets the rules | Conversion or redemption |
|---|---|---|---|
| GHO | Minted through Aave facilitators, constrained by eligible collateral and issuance caps. | Aave governance approves facilitators and sets their capacity; it also controls relevant parameters. | Aave’s Stability Module supports swaps with governance-approved stablecoins. This is a protocol mechanism, not a promise of direct dollar redemption. |
| DAI | Generated against governance-approved collateral deposited in Sky Protocol Vaults. | Sky governance approves collateral and sets risk parameters, including the Dai Savings Rate. | Vaults generate Dai against collateral; the reviewed Sky materials do not establish a direct issuer-style dollar redemption promise. |
| USDC | Issued by regulated Circle affiliates and backed by liquid reserves held for holders’ benefit. | Circle manages issuance and redemption; this is an issuer arrangement rather than a collateral-borrowing protocol. | Circle says USDC is redeemable 1:1 for U.S. dollars, subject to its redemption pathway and eligibility. |
The table describes mechanisms, not a safety ranking. Their risks depend on different things: protocol collateral, smart contracts and governance for GHO and DAI; and issuer, reserve, banking and regulatory dependencies for USDC.

How GHO is created within Aave
Aave describes GHO as a decentralized, overcollateralized stablecoin native to its protocol and designed to maintain a U.S. dollar peg. In the currently documented arrangement, a user borrows GHO against eligible collateral supplied to the Aave V3 Ethereum market. The amount available is bounded by collateral requirements and by facilitator bucket capacities.
Facilitators are governance-approved entities or mechanisms that can mint and burn GHO up to their assigned caps. Unlike ordinary Aave reserve borrowing, GHO issuance does not draw tokens from liquidity supplied by depositors: the facilitator model mints the token, while collateral constraints and caps limit issuance. Aave says interest paid by GHO borrowers goes to the Aave DAO treasury; that is a revenue-design detail, not evidence that borrowing is free or that the token is safer.

How DAI is generated under Sky
Sky’s current whitepaper describes Dai as generated, backed and stabilized through assets deposited in Sky Protocol Vaults. Governance determines which collateral is accepted and sets risk parameters for each collateral type. DAI and GHO are therefore both collateral-backed protocol stablecoins, but their collateral policies, contracts and governance arrangements are distinct.
Sky was formerly known as MakerDAO. Its current whitepaper says the project introduced the Sky Savings Rate for USDS in 2024 while DAI and the Dai Savings Rate continue to coexist. DAI is not the same token as USDS. Sky’s live collateral parameters and the current Dai Savings Rate are not stated here, so no current rate or comprehensive collateral list should be inferred.

What a peg or redemption mechanism actually means
A target price and a mechanism intended to support it do not guarantee that every exchange, pool or transaction clears at exactly one dollar. Aave’s GHO Stability Module allows swaps with governance-approved stablecoins. Aave describes an initial fixed 1:1 pricing strategy, while also presenting the framework as configurable through governance. It is a peg-support mechanism—not a guarantee of a constant market price or a universal right to redeem GHO for dollars.

For USDC, Circle states that the token is always redeemable 1:1 for U.S. dollars. That is Circle’s issuer statement about redemption, not a claim that every secondary-market trade occurs at par. Circle Mint is available to institutions, not individuals, according to Circle’s USDC materials; an individual holder should not assume they can redeem directly through Circle Mint.

Circle’s transparency page reported 74.1 billion dollars of USDC in circulation and 74.3 billion dollars in total reserves as of October 5, 2026. Circle says it has reported on reserve assets since 2018 and provides monthly third-party assurances that reserves meet or exceed USDC in circulation. These are Circle’s disclosures and claims; the rounded snapshot figures should not be used to calculate an exact reserve surplus or treated as an independent risk assessment.
How savings features differ
sGHO
Aave documents sGHO as an Ethereum mainnet ERC-4626 vault. A depositor puts GHO into the vault and receives sGHO shares whose value in GHO increases as yield accrues from an on-chain rate. Aave says deposits and withdrawals are instant, with no cooldown, slashing risk or rehypothecation of deposited funds. The rate is set by governance and can change; an August 27, 2026 Aave governance post proposed changes to specified GHO borrowing rates and the Aave Savings Rate. That dated proposal does not establish the rate currently in effect.

Dai Savings Rate
The Dai Savings Rate is a governance-set parameter. Sky describes adjusting it as one way to influence demand around the one-dollar target: lowering it may reduce demand when Dai is above target, while raising it may encourage demand when Dai is below target. These are intended effects, not guaranteed outcomes, and the rate is not fixed.
The Circle materials covered here do not establish a comparable savings feature or yield for simply holding USDC. No numerical live savings rate is given for sGHO or DAI because rates are mutable and a dated proposal or protocol description is not a current rate quote.

Which design fits your needs?
- Consider GHO if you want a stablecoin issued through Aave’s collateralized borrowing and facilitator system, and you understand that its parameters and conversion framework depend on Aave governance.
- Consider DAI if you want a collateral-generated stablecoin governed through Sky, with Vault collateral policies and a governance-controlled savings parameter.
- Consider USDC if an issuer-backed token with Circle’s stated one-for-one dollar redemption is relevant to your use case, while accounting for Circle’s redemption eligibility and issuer-related dependencies.
These are design distinctions, not recommendations or a ranking. A comparative judgment about realized peg performance or overall risk would require aligned, current market data and a common risk framework; the mechanisms alone cannot establish which token is safest or best.
