To start with Tuya Cloud Development, create a cloud project, choose how your app will manage users and devices, select the APIs your project needs, then authenticate and test those APIs before launch. The most important early decision is whether you are building around Tuya-powered apps such as Smart Life or creating your own industry application and account model.
What Tuya Cloud Development is for
Tuya Cloud Development gives applications and services a way to work with Tuya-connected devices and related data through cloud APIs. Depending on the products selected for a project, capabilities include device registration, activation, control and removal; smart scenarios; analytics; real-time message subscriptions; and industry-specific services.
Tuya lists additional APIs for areas including OTA, email, push notifications, weather, location, infrared, body-fat scales, smart locks and video. These are product-specific extensions, not a guarantee that every project automatically has access to every API. Tuya’s Cloud Development documentation describes the basic premise: “Create a project on the Cloud Development section inside IoT Development Platform to obtain permission to call the APIs.”
Choose a development method before creating the project
The choice shapes the account model and device-pairing experience your application will rely on. Tuya’s project setup guide distinguishes Smart Home PaaS from Custom Development:

If your users already pair devices in Smart Life or a Tuya-branded/OEM app, Smart Home PaaS is the natural starting point. If your service needs to own user accounts, assets and business workflows, consider Custom Development and plan for the additional application logic that entails.
Create the cloud project
- Register a Tuya developer account. Open the Cloud Development area of the IoT Development Platform.
- Create a project. Enter a project name and choose its industry, development method and data center. Tuya defines a cloud project as an isolated collection of devices, API permissions and data assets.
- Select the data center for your deployment. The detailed setup guide lists China, US, Europe and India endpoints. Match the project to where its devices are deployed, and verify the current endpoint and regional availability in Tuya’s documentation before implementation; regions and endpoints can change.
- Subscribe to the required cloud products. Select the products that provide the API capabilities your use case needs, then authorize the project to call them. Creating a project alone does not mean every API is enabled.
- Inspect and debug requests. Use API Explorer to examine and test the available requests. Tuya also presents device debugging, virtual connected devices and error-code lookup as developer tools.
Authenticate, integrate and test
After project authorization, implement the authentication and OpenAPI calls your application requires. Tuya’s support workflow describes the sequence as obtaining cloud API authorization, creating an SDK or schema where applicable, developing the business logic, and publishing after testing. The exact implementation depends on the selected products and integration; use the current API documentation and API Explorer rather than assuming one authentication flow or API set fits every project.

For integrations that require Tuya-app pairing, users activate devices through a Tuya-powered app or an app built with Tuya’s App SDK. Device lifecycle APIs can then support registration, activation, control and removal. Build and test the end-to-end flow—including how your application associates a device with the right user or asset—before releasing it.
What you can build with the APIs
- Device management: use standard APIs for supported device registration, activation, control and removal operations.
- Smart scenarios: create automations in which device, time or environmental conditions trigger actions across devices.
- Data and event processing: use analytics APIs and real-time message subscriptions for monitoring, storage and downstream processing.
- Industry features: add relevant services such as OTA, notifications, weather, location, infrared, smart-lock or video APIs when available and authorized for the project.
For device-to-cloud connectivity at larger scales, Tuya IoT Core also describes network modules, TuyaOS Link SDK and edge gateways. Its current product page states a 99.9% availability target and support for several hundred million devices; these are Tuya’s product claims, not a service guarantee for every project. Check the selected plan’s limits and suitability with Tuya before designing around those figures.

Accounts, trials and costs
Tuya Support says both individual and enterprise developers can use Cloud Development. Under the policy cited by Tuya, individual users in mainland China may need identity verification; users outside mainland China do not have that restriction. Confirm the requirements that apply to your account in the current console.
There is no single Cloud Development price or quota established here for every project. Tuya Support’s 2026 guidance says accounts registered after 15 October 2021 receive a one-month free trial of Device Connection Service, starting when the developer applies. Eligibility and current plan rules should be confirmed in the billing console; this trial is for that service, not a blanket statement that all Cloud Development capabilities are free.

A separate Tuya Developer pricing page dated 2024 describes a Smart App SDK development edition limited to 1 million cloud requests per month and 100 registered end users, alongside an official edition priced at USD 5,000 for the initial year and USD 2,000 per year for renewal in that document. Those figures apply to the listed Smart App SDK editions and should not be treated as pricing for every Cloud Development project. Verify current SDK terms and pricing before budgeting.

Before you go live
- Confirm that the project uses the intended development method and data center.
- Check that each required cloud product is subscribed to and authorized.
- Test authentication, API requests, device pairing and the user-to-device or asset flow.
- Review current regional endpoints, service limits, plan terms and account requirements in Tuya’s live documentation and console.
- Validate operational needs such as event handling, analytics and any industry APIs your application depends on.
